Both Johnny and June both had very beautiful versions of this song... June's seems to have a little more emotion in her voice, but John's has that driven passion feel to it.. I feel like with this vs. Johnny's version is like Johnny's take on "Hurt." It feels like it's different and not the original, like he made "hurt" his own, i feel that with June singing this, not that she did better, but that it has a completely different feeling than John's... i love it!

I think the sense of "Ring of Fire" has a hellish meaning. Afterall she always said she wrote it for him and both of them were married to others at the time. It seems reasonable that the terror of that is going on during the song. In their case it worked out well. They did seem to be the right people for each other in the end. But I have not heard any credible source suggesting that this was intended to mean passion when it was written. As a purely historical note, this song captures a great deal of the messiness of life.

Actually when you wrote this, the exact thing you described happened in Folsom. Anita Carter, the original singer of this song and June's sister, has a daughter named Lorrie. She and a Carter Family friend went down to Folsom and paid tribute to Johnny and the Carter Family. June's daughter Carlene is still making music, Roseanne and John Cash, Johnny's children, are still making music. Recently Carlene, John, Roseanne and some others recorded an album of songs Johnny Cash wrote but never recorded. It's coming out soon.
