Once upon a time... I was on holiday flight , and 90's there was possibility to visit cockpit. There was some kids (Well I was around 15yr old back then) going and coming from cockpit. After the traffic was settled down, I decided to go there. We had a pleasant chat with the Cpt and he asked me "How do you know so much about the instruments and flying?". Told him that my big dream is to be a pilot and I am seriously interested about flying and planes. :) He listened to me, and asked if I wanted to stay in cockpit all the way to the stop!!! And suprisingly I did say YES! That was so amazing! Thanks for the Captain awesome!!! Too bad I had a car accident just before joining army, I wanted to go for pilot training, but I got seriously injured and that took my dream away.. I got broken neck and quadraplegia. But all I want to say to you guys dreaming of being a pilot.. NEVER GIVE UP!!! Follow your dreams!
You should read some articles about "pilots & stress" they suffer nowadays, and financing the education by yourself. It's not that dream it was maybe some decades ago. Some have to do a sidejob in a bar or so, just to payback the educational costs.
It was amazing approach and pilot skill also perfect cockpit professionalism as crew. Million thanks for your priceless effort to make this(and for all others) video, informative post-production along the all approach path. Have a nice, lovely and safe flights.
As a 17 year old who wants to become a pilot, this video makes me want to pursue becoming a pilot even more! This video was extremely cool and hope that you can make more like it one day! Thanks Captain Joe for all that you do!
4:00 - i was like " captain joe, where's that freakin runway? I can see the sea but there's no runway!" I thought we're going nowhere lol Awesome landing video!!!
Instant like, just cause you are landing on my island :D most people doesn't know, after landing and slowing down, you pass through a line that crosses the whole runway... that marks where the runway ended before being extended :) It was a whole different feeling to land there.
That's so awesome ... I've lived in Funchal, have flown this route many times as a passenger. Really exciting to get the pilots perspective of this insane approach.
Between the strong Portuguese accent and the general noise on the radio, I did have the most tremendous difficulty discerning what the tower controller was saying. Does it ever happen to you that you simply don't understand a controller, and have to ask him to repeat it?
Hey Robert, I admit in the cockpit it´s a little easier to understand the ATC, especially with the headset on. Next time I´ll record directly from my headset to get clear audio :) Greetings Joe
And with many hours listening to radio communications you start to get the hang of it. I'm an amateur radio operator and at first I did not understand a thing. Now I do understand voice under terrible radio conditions. Great video CJ!
@@JackIsNotInTheBox That might be true in aviation industry, since you're expecting a nearby VOR or a departure on the charts or something. But with ham radio you really don't know what callsign will come in next. You just learn to recognize the NATO alphabet in horrible conditions.

Exactly. That's just a matter of practice. The first few times it's hard, but it get's easier with the time. What you also should mention is, that this was a VOR-apporach (visual). If you do an ILS-Approach the Autopilot will guide you to the so called "Localizer" (a kind of radiobeacon) and will line you up with the centerline of the runway. So you don't have to guess if you're doing well or not. On certified Airports most modern Planes could even land alone (ILS Cat IIIb-Landing). Source: I'm a PPL(A) Pilot currently training for CPL.
What a nice video! Especially with the two cameras, approach charts, checklists and subtitles. I remember my best flight, it was with a Spanish airline flying from Madrid to Vienna, I was allowed to get into the cockpit on flight and chat with the pilots while flying over the Alps :) they even allowed me to stay and watch the approach and landing, it was soooo cool! It was a confirmation that being a pilot would be my dream job. Thanks a lot to these two pilots and all the people around that keep the love of flying alive! Thanks Captain Joe!
Have been a passenger on that landing several times in the late 80's when I was a kid, I remember the runway being MUCH shorter. One year we landed in very bad weather and I was sat on the right aisle, the plane touched down and most people seemed to be clapping in relief, I wasn't though as I could tell we were going way faster than usual as I saw the terminal building to my right! When we eventually stopped and turned, I remember seeing other passengers looking out of the window and saying 'bloody hell we were a bit close to the end!'. Excellent video, brings back memories. Thank you.
Hey Captain Joe, dieses Video ist einfach fantastisch! Wunderschöne Bilder und der beste Einblick, den ich bisher auf UA-cam ins Cockpit gesehen habe! Gerne mehr solcher Videos! :D

I’m from Madeira/Funchal and i have to say it’s a hard challenge there are crosswinds almost everyday and the runway is way too short for safe aproach on those winds, usually you end up going to Porto Santo and wait for 1 or 2 hours until you have a safe wind speed to land, but at the same time it’s awesome to be inside of the plane for this aproach and watch it from ground too, there are channels in UA-cam only with Madeira aproaches i truly recomend
no runway can be a captain only landing for all difficult approaches and airports I.E london city honduras st maarten etc pilots must pass extensive training for that particular airport or approach
Joe gave this reply to another comment. "Yes the pilot to the left, the Captain, performed this flight, he had to cause it´s a "captain´s landing only" airport :) Greetings Joe"
its not about the airport but more of the environmental conditions, eg crosswind . Where a captain with i guess a certain amount of flying hours can fly the approach
What is that long buzzing noise after the short loud beeping "Autopilot OFF" audio signal? (which apparently has to be disabled by clicking the button?)
It´s a warning sound, reminding us that we are going below a select altitude, but that´s normal after switching of the Autopilot and setting the go-arround altitude. Greetings Joe
Very beatiful island but one of the hardest airport to land part of runaway is above sea and most of time thers strong crosswinds! You did a great Landing Joe
Funchal is probably my favourite airport to land at, only as a passenger mind. Nice view of the stilts on the way past going into the final turn. Most times i have landed there the pilots have been hard on the breaks so they can make the first right rather than having to turn around on the runway further down to get to the gate.
