My grandfather told me in Vietnam they had dog teams that would hunt down the VC.. the teams carried 12g shotguns (presumably running with 00 buck shot), he said the dogs would get the team close to wherever they were hiding and they would all just start shooting in the general direction with the shotguns. He described the bodies as completely mangled and "turned inside out."
Shotguns are also really popular with pointmen in woodland/jungle combat situations. It's really common to not know where an enemy is until you're right on top of them. The abundant foliage provides a tonne of concealment but very little cover.

That was my immediate thought when seeing this video 😂
I think the reason shotguns are so heavily nerfed in videogames is because maps are typically pretty small compared to real world environments. If a videogame shotgun can reliably kill enemies or other players at 50-80 feet or so, they'd be all anyone ever used and everybody would go around one-shotting their enemies. Sure you're probably not going to be sniping guys across the map with one, but people would be screaming for shotguns to get nerfed if they had realistic damage and effective range.
Escape From Tarkov seems to be a unique case, since shotguns in that game can deliver significant damage at ranges much further than most videogame shotguns. Doom 3 has the worst shotgun from my experience. You literally need to be within 3-6 feet of an imp to reliably kill with one shot with the shotgun there. Thankfully Doom 2016 didn't continue that trend and has a pretty awesome shotgun.
The issue with tarkov is that pmcs can tank multiple shots to the head and chest if they're wearing armor. In real life it doesn't matter what you're wearing, if you get hit with a slug or buckshot you're going down for a while. That energy has to go somewhere.

@@nonstickpansexual4540 To be fair to tarkov, the screen does blur from pain when shot in chest armor, and it get even worse on top of ringing ears when a helmet stops a bullet due to the concussion. Although, would a realistic simulation of what it's like when armor stops a slug be fun in a game? There is a point where realism starts to detract.
Insurgency Sandstorm is unique in that it has more realistic shotgun damage/range and i absolutely love it. It’s actually satisfying to use them unlike in cod or battlefield lol

Just bought and shot my first shot gun today for home defense(12 gauge). Some of these shots literally made my jaw drop seeing the damage this thing can inflict. Makes me pray I never have a reason to use it, lol.
Absolutely nothing beats a shotgun for close-quarter work. In fact, if I could have no other firearm, I'd have a shotgun. They're utterly devastating at close range, and slugs, for all practical purposes, turn your shotgun into a high-powered rifle with a range up to 200 yards. They're also every bit as powerful as a 30-06.

I have run a lot of different firearm platforms. The other day ago I realized that I really didn't have a whole lot of experience with shotguns. I knew how to use them, but not much else. I bought an 18.5 inch mossberg 590 retrograde and am really enjoying it. Also enjoying learning more about them.

When I lived in Johannesburg ZA I had to use a shotty in lethal force. Yes they are deadly especially at apartment range (15ft away give or take) and do make quite a mess.
FYI there is a big difference between the damage done by birdshot and 00 buck. Birdshot really likes to spread out, and it you don’t use a choke, it will try to spread everywhere, buck stays pretty tight it seems. Buck also is a thicker diameter, so it has more energy per pellet to transfer to the target. The insane damage he is getting is due to the nice 00 buck ammo used. Standard Walmart size 7.5-8 shot won’t do quite the same thing.

As a small child, I remember watching the movie "Desperado" with Salma Hayek and Antonio Banderas and seeing how devastating the 12ga Double-Barreled Shotgun was. I sincerely thought, it could send a full grown man flying across the room, as it did in the movie.

My gunstore got a pallet of those Brenneke Black Magic magnum slugs and those things are actually insane. Like six hundred grains of straight lead at 1550 FPS with a flight control wad and I'm literally vaporizing five gallon buckets of water and not finding the slug after.

To combine the range of the slug and the destruction of the buckshot (even more than the buckshot actualy) I found that Hexolit 32 work very good.
It was frown upon by some hunters because it didn't go all the way trough a wild boar and mangled the meat, but for human target it's golden.
The brenneke super magnum (4000j at the mouth) are good too, especialy vs soft armor. No matter the trauma pad, no matter the stoppage of the round, you'll have a big cavity in your chest.
The Sauvestre in 12/76 are my favorite for long ranges. With a rifled choke on my spass 12 (no poking fun at me guys) I hit consistently at 200-250m. After that it just goes mortar and you need to aim a building and a half higher. Yet, 250m for a shotgun is quite impressive.

ya kno, chief, what id love to see is a comparison between, maybe the 3 or 4 most common gauges...something that compares .410, 20ga and 12ga, in terms of damage, range, ease of use for the shooters shoulder, and application. for me, i find that the 20ga is the best overall shotgun round. it is considerably powerful enough for most applications, yet isnt nearly as punishing on my shoulder...but still, itd be interesting to see all the comparisons and data, and what each gauges strengths and limitations are.

I dispatched an armadillo once with a 12 gauge slug from 10 yards away which turned out to be a bad choice. It popped like zit and blew all over the place including all over us. It was really incredibly effective. It was literally almost vaporized. Stuff flew like 30 to 40 feet in the air and all around us.

I use #5 nitro turkey loads, rem 870 long barrel with primo turkey choke.... coyotes around 50-70 yards drop with no life in them. Protecting the ranch animals, chicken sheep ect ..... shotgun deadly??

It is because maps in COD and other shooters are unrealistically small, so they need to nerf weapons that excel at short range combat like shotguns and SMGs so that weapons that are meant to be used at long range like rifles can still compete at the unrealistically short engagement ranges of the game.

I really like watching the damage done by buck and slug shot. In my home defense set up I use #4 or #2 shot from a modified choke. I live in a suburb with homes maybe 7 yards apart. I just want to be sure that the pellets stay inside the house.
