- Continental Divide Trail Thru-hiker and bearded warrior, "The Real Hiking Viking, shares his top three tips for succeeding on the United States most raw and demanding long-trail.
In order to complete the +2,600 mile journey, one must already be in good backpacking shape, have a good understanding of the weather conditions they are likely to run into, and thus the gear they should carry on the trail, and possess at least basic orienteering skills prior to hitting the CDT.

Yeah this is good advice here ! I'm looking into the CDT for next year ! Thanks for the advice
Awesome beard !
What do you use for footwear in the snow?
So I need to hike for 3 months with my gear on before I go hiking ? What if I just get that 3 months of hiking on that trail? Seems like the same thing.
Good tips!
I am curious about how you keep you pack weight down having to contend with the diversity of weather you will be facing. cold weather gear is heavy stuff to be carrying on hot days etc.
as long as you layer correctly, your cold weather clothing shouldn't rack up a ton if weight nor take up a ton of space in your pack
How hard is to see any markings for the trail? Like do you actually most have a map n compass or you can wing it??
is that a camera pack you have upfront?
how do these people make a living to be able to take half the year off to hike?
+epicawesome Save money. Dont have kids, avoid a mortgage. Hiking is relatively cheap compared to normal living.
This guy is a decorated Military Vet. he helpe promote Warrior Walk for wounded Warriors. he is sponsored to a degree by various manufactors .....is an all around good guy. def. NOT a trust fund.
+Slow Hiker Huh, I haven't met one yet. I guess I met the other end of the spectrum and total hippie bums lol
+epicawesome I work seasonal jobs around the world and travel when between contracts. If I save the money while working the seasonal job (with included room and board) I'll have a good chunk of change whenever I'm done.
No disrespect, but I'm getting sick and tired of people always asking how folks make their money. The short answer is that its none of any of our business so I'll just leave it at that. There are plenty of youtubers with Ferrari's and Helicopter's so go and bother them with those nosey questions. This guy is basically just wondering through the woods and you're asking him about money? Dude get a life.
Haha
