I've seen all versions of the "A Star Is Born" movies including the original Janet Gaynor version. I don't think any versions of these movies should be compared because they are all different in their own way. The only things that are the same are the titles and eventual ending of the male lead. Otherwise they're all great in their own right. There is no doubt that Judy Garland's version is absolutely incredible, she was absolutely incredible. She proved that despite her being essentially kicked out of her previous studio, she still had it in spades. "The Man That Got Away" was, in my opinion, the best performance of a song she ever gave in any movie she was ever in. But I am more partial to Barbra's version. However, it has nothing to do with Judy or Barbra. It has to do with the storyline and the chemistry with the male leads these two legends had. Barbra and Kris, despite rumors of difficulties, had incredible chemistry. Not even Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper can compare respectively. Barbra's Esther was tough, didn't take anyone's crap including John Norman's. She fought for what she had and at the very end showed "she wasn't going to look down". Like always Barbra is a force to be reckoned with but it should not be forgotten that Barbra had a lot of love and respect for Judy Garland. They were friends and respected each other's talents and gifts. Therefore I don't these movies should be compared, only celebrated.

Barbra has two problems as a film actress. First she was brought up in broadway, so she over emoticates. What ought to be a subtle emotion on camera, she is broadcasting to the audience in the balcony. Second, as a social political activist, her primary motivation is to communicate to you that she is the most intelligent person in the room. She doesn't know how to play a character, she only plays herself being in different situations. She is the same character in every role she plays.
Thank you for that complex, erudite, Stanislavskian acting analysis. The millions of us who've derived great pleasure from her film performances over five decades should hang our heads in shame. It's pretty clear that your real beef with Streisand is that your political ideology clashes with hers. She's passionate and well informed. She speaks her mind, and she's extremely well spoken. She's highly intelligent--but being bright and communicating effectively doesn't mean she's full of herself or that she's showing off. When she acts, and when she speaks about important subjects, she reveals herself, in a wonderful way. She is sincere, she is genuine, and she is unfailingly truthful. That sense of truth also permeates her acting. Your comment, by contrast, reveals who *you* are, but in a decidedly less wonderful way.
Please, no need for you or your millions to hang your head in shame. We all have our vices. I, myself, have always had a penchant for Ted Knight, who was only a slightly more acomplished actor than Barbra and to the best of my knowledge has never won a single academy award for acting. I am a huge fan of Pacino, Deniro, and other activist who practice Barbra's brand of politics. But somehow, unlike Barbra, they have acquired the skills to separate their screen characters from their true personality. It is wonderful that you have been following Barbra for over fifty years as you might be old enough to remember her only Oscar for acting. But she was very young then and was probably required to follow some direction. It has been downhill from there. Barbra in her own words was /is not a practitioner of Stanislavski method you espouse. Too bad, it may have pushed her into improving her subpar acting skills. It is paradoxical that the more authority she acquired in behind the scenes executive/financial/directing/writing production, the more she was able to insulate herself from addressing her major acting weaknesses. Perhaps if others had produced Yentl, the less disastrous it would have become. In the end, your efforts to defend Barbra were no more influential than Yentls attempt to alter the Talmud. Break a leg. @@DeanLeonard1
