The scene with Quatermass and the policeman rummaging about in the derelict house was creepy for me. The scratches on the walls gave me the chills. This film was (and remains) one of the best Sci-Fi/Horror films ever made.
I was genuinely scared by that scene when I saw it in 1968 at age 12. I started sweating just like the cop did in that scene.

I first saw this around a Christmas time years ago when I was a youngster. I wouldn't go upstairs on my own in the dark for over a week, that house scene was definitely a contributing factor!
In my humble opinion this is one of the best sci-fi films ever made.
The ending scared the crap out of me the first time I seen it and forever got me hooked into sci-fi

For its age, the special effects hold up quite well. And the storyline is as valid today as it was then. And the characters are evergreen classics - the military officer who is sure it's an enemy propaganda tool, the Civil engineers and workers that just want the damn thing out of there so that they can get back to work, the scientists who ignore the obvious danger in pursuit of a new discovery. All classic personalities that we can relate to because we all know and/or have worked with people like that. Great movie!
Great movie; a true classic. But also very prophetic. Consider this quote from Quatermass: "If we found that our earth was doomed, say by climatic changes, what would we do about it ? Nothing. Just go on squabbling as usual". How true is that !!!!!
Like now, we face WW-3 but we are addicted to TV and media. Our downfall.
It's not prophetic they'd known about climate change since the 1950s. They were commenting on any existing issue that was already being ignored

@@flybobbie1449 The upward tick in CO2 was reported from Mona Loa, Hawaii since the late 50's. Read 'Silent Spring' by Carlson. Not an Ice age; global warming.
I was 11 or 12 years old when I first saw this, and heavily into astronomy. After watching the movie, I took my telescope out into the back yard, just in time to see the blood-red Mars appear over the horizon. The sight of it sent a shiver up my spine so intense that I can still feel it now.
Very scary for its time.

I'm a big fan of Hammer films, and this is a fine one. However, when it comes to this story, I do prefer the original BBC teleplay. Though that glowing giant devil head in the sky stuck with me since I first saw it as a child. Funny, that, since the premise is based on iconography of this sort and how it is subliminally in all of us.
That played on my mind for some time.
Much as I like the film I find the original serial better as it instils a great sense of atmosphere in me when I watch it. So I`m with you there.

The story hits a chord because the premises it conjures up are true of people. group differences and rivalries.
My mum saw the original TV series when she was 18 and said it terrified her, especially the giant image in the sky!

How is it that films from this era (and a LONG time before this) could be recorded in such a way that you could understand every single word without making any effort,but films now you have to listen VERY carefully with subtitles on to get every word?
I saw this movie on TV in the early 70s when I was a kid. I was completely fascinated by it. I still am. I have a copy of it somewhere on video cassette.
I saw this movie as part of a double feature with Planet of the Apes in 1968 when I was 12. I was more entertained and shaken and scared by this movie than POTA. The Quatermass movie had a budget 10 % of POTA.
I saw this as a kid in the 70s. I was fascinated by the story of the devil having it's origins as an alien from Mars. My favorite Hamer film, though I did think having the Martian race depicted as giant grasshoppers was kind of hokey.
For me it's "That's no bomb! Whatever is it?!" Quatermass has seen aliens before (as I found out) but it's all new to Roney: his objectivity lends weight to the shocking discovery.
I think this was shown Christmas 1973. I remember because grand parents would stay xmas, we all sat and watched. Probably boxing day film.

One of the greatest underrated classic sci-fi movies ever.
My first viewing of this movie was when I was a kid in the very early 80s. It was a late night movie, and it scared the willies out of me. I haven't seen this movie in many, many years. Only now, decades later, do I wonder why a team of researchers would dissect an alien life form without even gloves or masks!
Saw it early 70's as a kid, it played on my mind.
Well this is the 1960s before the craziness of Health & Safety!

@@charleswest6372 - It's a British movie. Health & Safety wasn't really a thing in 1967, when this movie came out - and even less so in 1959, when the original BBC TV serial was broadcast.
The Tom Cruise movie War of the Worlds has a similar vibe, buried ancient aliens/ships etc.
The emergence of the tripod is stunning in that movie. visually and audio construct. the scream of its gas turbine accelerating and sound of hydraulics .

First saw this on Boxing Day 1972, when I was 13. I remember this part of the film where the lab technician sticks the label "contents of thorax" onto the jar. Still holds up well more than 50 years after it's release and attained a type of cult status:

You've just completely jogged my memory, with reference to my other slightly earlier comment on this clip! It was indeed Boxing Day in 1972 when I saw the film for the first time on TV. I would have just turned 11 years old. This film still easily ranks in my Top 5 of all time.

I've been a Hammer fan for 53 years
Having finally watched the original tv series courtesy of the DVd box set of the surviving material I think this was the best of the Hammer adap[tations, all the better for the long wait of 8 years .We had a wonderful interpretation by Andrew Keir, vastly superior to Brian Donleavy, ,James Donald and Barbara Shelley. Julian Glover was very close to the original performance by Andrew Bushell with a bit more presence and this was very faithful to the original. It is a credit to Nigel Kneale's writing that we go along with what is a fairly crazy plot that nevertheless inspired both the Deamons and Image of the Fendahl in Dr Who.

When I was a teen, I saw this as part of a series of films at a local theater in Berkeley. Despite the pacing, I found the film atmospheric and damned creepy. Well done, Hammer!

There’s much more thoughtful Sci-Fi to the BBC’s short serial, Quatermass and the Pit, than is apparent in the theatrical film release version, 5 million Years to Earth. The BBC multi-part story (which can be found here on UA-cam) offers an explanation for why human beings seem periodically predisposed to violent fascism, and which fills in some otherwise puzzling turns in the film. This is important question today, and was much more so for a world not too far removed from Hitler and the Nazis death camps.
The explanation being, that periodic violent fascism was one of the fundamental behaviors of our Martian creators. Who had genetically engineered man from one of Earth’s earlier primates. Being insectoid, the ancient Martians had organized an efficient hive society. Non-conformity among members could not be tolerated for the ‘good’ of that hive society. Hence the Martians would violently ‘cleanse’ their society of non-conformity via periodic wars driven by mass hysteria. Eliminating those within it who wouldn’t, or couldn’t conform.
I find this idea to be intriguing SciFi, toward explaining the perplexing human propensity toward violently fascist mass hysteria sort of behavior. This tragic periodic desire by many of us to eliminate those who don’t conform to some societal standard, either in physical characteristics, or in behavior, thinking or beliefs. To ‘cleanse’ society of non-conformity.
Found this in the charity shop the other day. Never seen this Hammer movie before but will be watching with interest. I inherited a Hammer box set from my dad who was a Horror movie fan of the Hammer variety!. This one though was missing from the collection...weirdly enough.
Love these old movies...first introduction to the world of horror movies in my younger days and it's a shame they've been relegated off mainstream channels and onto other freeview nooks and crannies.
These intelligent and huge Martian insects ended up being so tender and juicy...😨🤣

Similar story concept to 2001 but filled in all the pieces and thus left the viewer more satisfied.
I think Kubrick hung the moon with 2001, but I agree. 2001 was well in production when Pit came out but Kubrick must surely have gone to see it: he watched everything.
Thankfully Stanley Kubrick WASN'T offered the script !!

I saw this film on tv as a kid and it scared the living shit out of me. And watching this scene here, even though I know the damn thing is fake (and it certainly looks it), the sons a bitches STILL give me the creeps!
If you ever get the chance, watch the 6 part BBC series Quatermass and the Pit (1958/59). Each part is 30 minutes, thus 3 hours total. The series moves more slowly; the movie is “tighter”. But the series explains a bit more. The movie - of course - is terrific.
Well at least it certainly looks a lot more realistic than we did. In 1959 soon after I started at Latymer Upper School in Hammersmith we were all leaping around the playground with our hands up like kangeroos shouting "I'm a tripod arthropod". It was a bit like that ritual massacre to see, except with silly school kids.
Then we need now is a plague of Locusts, AHHHHHA that's it I'm moving to Sparta@
I have LOVED this movie for decades, but the former medical librarian in me shudders over the scientists not wearing gloves while they examine the alien corpse.
This film is major blasphemy, but that's what science fiction should be, awesome film
No containment suits NO precautions at all with the aliens autopsy....lol...but a great movie !!!!
That they could make a sci fi movie as suspenseful and terrifying as this with hokey "Martian" locusts never ceases to amaze me! But they did.
The guys in the Santili film actually did a more thorough and professional job of an alien autopsy than what we see here! Still it’s a brilliant movie!

This was released in the US as 5 Million Years to Earth. Apparently this was the last of a series of Quartermass films in the UK. The others might be interesting.
The others are interesting, despite the wholly-inappropriate casting of Brian Donlevy as the titular British scientist.

An excellent Sci Fi movie. Those alien locusts still bug me to this day.
Funnily enough I saw this on Amazon (UK) just this evening and it was Region 1 only.

I saw this when I was probably 5 or 6 at my grandma's house on TV. It took me 33 years to figure out what it was and it bothered me my entire childhood that I couldn't remember. Gave me nightmares! lol

I think I remember that in the news, the bust of the real alien they found is on the bench (rhs)at 1.33, and still PLENTY of them going about to this day!
