It's such a good line, because the first time I watched the movie, I thought that it's the overall message of the movie, but upon my re-watch, I then realized that it's actually one of Fletcher's variety of ways to manipulate Andrew, except Fletcher has also simultaneously fooled us. Fletcher only wants to get back at Andrew for being a whistleblower. He never expects Andrew to actually become a great musician during the climax. The completion of Andrew's transformation has nothing to do with the constant pursuit of validation that Fletcher impresses in the club, rather, it is defying Fletcher by taking control of the band away from him for Caravan, and queueing in the band himself. Unfortunately, Fletcher eventually still takes control of Andrew by using feigned kindness to earn his trust. When Andrew knocks over the crash cymbal, Fletcher stands it back up, and uses that action a transition to take control of Andrew and slow him down to a gentle snare roll. Then Andrew only speeds up to Fletcher's liking, and it becomes apparent when Andrew becomes a great musician that Fletcher didn't just have an interest in cultivating a great musician, but CONTROLLING a great musician. Fletcher is, once again, much more sinister than meets the eye. The movie manipulates us just as Fletcher manipulates Andrew.
I'm a bass player as well (upright, electric, 6 string upright) I like this group/section we have formed. Drums and Bass. The fountain of the band and music, without it, it's either filler or a kazoo band (I'm kidding).
I would totally be down to play this with my HS band if it wheren't for the Bass Clarinet (which I play) part requiring a Low-C bass clarinet for the last note in the solo, I am working on getting a Low-C Kessler though
Siddhant Misra Of course. The style of Jazz that is heavily featured in Whiplash is Bebop Jazz. The same style that inspired Cowboy Bebop. Hence the title.
It's kind of a bluesy cha-cha from the sound of it, and while I know little about this kind of jazz in general, I'd say digging around reddit or something might help.
Hey all, --what would be the name of the type of music that's featured in this movie Whiplash?? @@pingu3n_ Absolutely NOT Orchestral band. This is a Full Big Band Jazz band. Take 5 is a jazz quintet. The Saxes doubling on Bass Clarinet and Flute do NOT make it Orchestral Band.
This is akin to 50s- 70s Jazz Big Band. (Specifically Big Band. Quintets will not have quite the same crunch) For example, Whiplash was pretty experimental for its time, Caravan is actually a much slower jazz standard, and Overture was written to obviously sound like Buddy Rich's band.

as someone who plays bass clarinet I screamed when I first heard this
Bass clarinet is fucking underrated. I say this as a tenor sax player.
Bari sax here. Totally agree.
