One of the most exhilarating yet tense non-battle battle themes I've ever had the pleasure to listen to in a movie. Really felt like an ultimate duel of Fletcher's expectations and Neiman's delivery, and both came out winning by the end.
If you WANNA imagine it as a battle theme, look up spike vs asiimov from cowboy bebop. I can't help but imagine that fight sequence played out to this over the actual song they wrote for it. It fits the theme of the entire show so well
Hi I'm a year late. Neiman doesn't win here? Fletcher sabotages him as a last screw you in the concert, Neiman plays Caravan as a rejection of Fletcher's authority. After so much abuse, this is his last shot at showing the world that he's better than Fletcher told him he always was... and what happens at the end? Fletcher starts calling the shots again, guiding him, telling him what to play. Over the course of a single song, he re-asserted his authority over Neiman, and has him under his control again. Neiman is forever a victim to his unsustainably high expectations of himself and a constant desire for approval from a higher authority. Another thing to note is that this would forever be the peak of his career, this is Charlie Parker's performance after the cymbal gets thrown at his head. The peak of his career, that he will forever have to live up to, and either fail or set an even higher bar to clear the next time. In an interview with the director, the interviewer asks what happens to Neiman. His response is that he'll live how his heroes lived and die how his heroes died. Overdosing in an alleyway.

Drums are the stabilizing/fundamental element in western music (well, pretty much in any type of music) In Rock Music, you have Kick and Snare Drum driving the beat, driving the music really. In Jazz Music, that role is typically taken over by the Cymbals, the right hand specifically. The Drums itself (Toms, Kick, Snare) are used to "comp" = accompany. Darius "Just Another Atheist" M Not really. Samba, bossa nova (Which is just a brazilian rip off of the original jazz) and batucada were replaced by pagode and michel telo
i cry to this not because how emotional this makes me. but because i have had too much wine at this moment and because the masterful construction of this piece fills me to the brim with extreme enthusiasm for music. music like this makes me feel so much more than just enjoyment.
Mega Kudos to the musicians who did the live recording for this film, especially the drummers...I use to play in a jazz band as part of the horn section for ~4/5 years and I never really realised how hard drummers worked during some pieces until i saw this film
my favorite line of the movie is when Fletcher was yelling at Nieman, and Nieman yelled "I wanna rock!" and the whole class clapped while Fletcher posted to reddit
I love the drum solo on this movie, it shows the struggles of all musicians, which I too have gone through with my trumpet, my finger literally got blisters and callus haha. I love this movie period.
i play trumpet, and I'm not really sure how you got blisters and calluses...if anything you might get tired from the blowing and your fingers might hurt a bit from pressing the valves really quickly, how did you get blisters???

If anyone is wondering, like if you're looking for the score for this exact song, you won't get anywhere just typing whiplash caravan. it's Caravan arranged by John Wasson.
do you know if one can find a score of "too hip to retire"?
+Loser I'll look into it and let you know as soon as I can if I find it. but honestly, learn the song by listening to it. that's how buddy did it
+Loser Okay, it's made by Tim simonec. I just sent a message to him on where I could find copies of his arrangements, because he isn't even on jwpepper. worst comes to worst, I'll write sheet music for you.
Shmowzow458 correction. that's who i indeed messaged instead of justin hurwitz. now i recall i tas about 3 months ago. i still have gotten a reply.
i mean damn, if you could really write it for me, you'd be the most awesome person ever. you'd have utter respect and awe from me. if you write the sheet music for me, i'll record myself playing it at post it in your honor.
+Loser oh well then if you didn't get a response, I doubt will. I'll try my absolute hardest to write sheet music for it. The time signature is really funky, so ill give it my best shot. but yeah, you appreciate the music, so for that I'll do it, but give me a little bit Lmfao, I'll let you know of my progress
“You have your mind on a happy meal instead of being on pitch!”
Poor guy never deserved that type of humiliation
For the record, he was in tune
But not knowing was bad enough
Why did I get this when I searched up “Lo-Fi Hip Hop”

I love drumming. his solo in caravan is a masterpiece
I thought I was drummer ...
NoLove DeepWebbb
I have a social life
NoLove DeepWebbb yes me too. But I'm ok with my drums level, I'm not interested by acquire Whiplash's drummer level
+NoLove DeepWebbb 1h everyday is good to acquire a descent drumming level, but to play stuff like caravan this good it is at least 4h a day ! i am doing 2-3h a day and i am not even close xD

hehehe ;)
you made a potentially mediocre drummer even worse, good job!!
you .....
I was on the edge of my seat for this film more than most any other thrillers.
This song is pretty epic, never thought I'd say that about jazz (I love the genre but I've only really ever heard mellow trio music).
My favorite part about this movie is how the end scene is basically Neman saying “you wanted someone with drive? I’ll show you drive, and while doing so, tell you to go fuck yourself”. It’s malicious compliance, and I love it.
Jazz is alive ...
It always was and always will be.
yeah... here in Brazil we dont have a good music :( so sad..
Raphael Gomes WHAT?! You have Samba and the Batucada!!
Darius "Just Another Atheist" M Not really. Samba, bossa nova (Which is just a brazilian rip off of the original jazz) and batucada were replaced by pagode and michel telo
Darius "Just Another Atheist" M no no no ... the real and old samba is very good, but now the samba is a totally shit .. batucada worst ..
That fucking ending. Lost for words.
LilHaseProductions runescape guy! Hey fam 😂😂😂😂
runescape 3 sucks. Old school RuneScape is the best

OSRS is the one. Haven't played any of RS3 since 2013
0:59 I love how the sound gets so jazzy and smooth here 🔥🔥🔥. Reminds me of New York in the 70s

i cry to this not because how emotional this makes me. but because i have had too much wine at this moment and because the masterful construction of this piece fills me to the brim with extreme enthusiasm for music. music like this makes me feel so much more than just enjoyment.
I'm agree with you my friend, lets take another bottle of a great wine !!!!!!!!!!!,
Mega Kudos to the musicians who did the live recording for this film, especially the drummers...I use to play in a jazz band as part of the horn section for ~4/5 years and I never really realised how hard drummers worked during some pieces until i saw this film
my favorite line of the movie is when Fletcher was yelling at Nieman, and Nieman yelled "I wanna rock!" and the whole class clapped while Fletcher posted to reddit
I dream that other classics would be remade with this level of production quality.
I have to say this song in my high school jazz band and I'm the lead trombone player and have to play this solo
Go play guitar, blisters and calluses are the least of your concerns
@@cupcakemcsparklebutt9051 Wind instruments suuuuck to play though. Like a lot.
On trumpet?
The most incredible last 15 minutes in a film
what a perfect combination of acting, music and editing
I think it's time we blow this scene
Get everybody and the stuff together
Ok, three, two, one, let's- No wait

This is quite possibly one of the most criminally underrated films of all time
It literally was an Oscar nominee for best movie, won best sound mixing and JK Simmons won best supporting actor, tf you mean underrated?
@@mrlowdays Ask anyone, "You ever see 'Whiplash?'" People seem to have never heard of the movie, not to mention it's a movie about jazz drumming so it's not going to draw many people who take it at face value to begin with. For those who've watched it (obviously including the Oscar voters), they now how phenomenal it is. Those who haven't tend to have written it off.
@@jordanc2616 You're asking the wrong people then everyone I know has either watched it or they at least are aware of its existence

The genre is bebop hence the similarities...
Listen to rush from cowboy Bebop, Andrew would murder those drums
exactly!
Tbh, Tank! is just a cousin from Caravan.

used to play Caravan in Mojave desert, then Deathclaw bit my head off
+Vladimir Rasplicka Yeah... fuck Caravan and fuck that Quarry. Dunno which is worse: the minigame or trying to deal with the Deathclaws.
+Vladimir Rasplicka was looking for this. up you go XD
Caravan is actually really easy when you get the hang of it. First 10 games are hard, next 10 are ok and when you're nearing 30, you win everything.
But it's fun to use the caravan bug to get more caps. If only the game would stop crashing when I get over 100 000...

As a drummer, this video makes me feel woefully inadequate.

Pretty cool to see the influence jazz had on other genres. Especially stuff like thrash. Just listen to the drumming on something like Rattlehead by Megadeth and you can easily understand that they are very similar genres
