  • Bonnie Garmus humorously reflects on her journey from a skeptical child in a Presbyterian choir to becoming an atheist. Through personal anecdotes, like ditching choir practice to play baseball and broadcasting a Monkees song during Easter service, Garmus shares how her curiosity and love for science led her to question religious teachings. She explains how doubt became her most valuable tool for seeking truth, and she encourages the audience to embrace curiosity and skepticism as paths to understanding the world.
Bonnie Garmus will accept FFRF’s Emperor Has No Clothes Award. Her charming, satiric, thought-provoking novel, “Lessons in Chemistry,” has sold in the multimillions. The award-winning global phenomenon, translated into 42 languages and on the bestseller list for more than a year, has been turned into a series on Apple TV starring Brie Larson. While the book’s feminism has been much remarked upon, almost every main character in it is a pronounced atheist.
