  • NYC is looking out for its small businesses during COVID-19, as long as they don't try too hard to stay in business.
    New York is asking its citizens to snitch on their local businesses for "price gouging." But in the midst of a widespread shutdown, some businesses might need to charge higher prices in order to survive!
    So what's more important? Keeping local businesses afloat? Or paying low prices for hand sanitizer? Is it possible to find a balance between the two?

      @@neatoketo6238 I generally trust conventional medicine as a discipline but my background is science/engineering and let's just say that I don't trust them without large datasets to work with. They weren't good enough at math to do what we do and statistics is more a set of guidelines than actual rules. They treat it like it's gospel and only a handful have the mathematic and scientific understanding to interpret data effectively let alone set up a proper experiment. Fortunately, those are usually the guys publishing.
      Remember 3%... Yeah there was data from the only country to get good containment on the virus showing 0.1-.3%. It's therefore the most controlled dataset so it's the best data. Now what are the studies showing? 0.1-.5%...

    Retail Catch22 in NYC. You can only sell it for a loss if you stock it, but if you sell it for a profit, you get fined. Makes perfect sense to the voices in my head.

    Prices aren't only the cost of the item you want to buy, its also crucial information as to the supply and demand of a product. If you don't allow your businesses to raise the price then the suppliers don't have an accurate take on how much they need to produce.

    Price gouging in emergencies is a real problem. If the price the stores pay for their stock is staying the same and they're charging more, making more profit than they would have, that's just evil. They're taking advantage of the very people that supported them until now.
    If their costs went up, fine, increase prices. I'm not stupid.

    Business owners know far, far less about running a business than politicans who have spent their whole adult life in politics do. And all business owners are independently wealthy, and they'd just hide their wealth in cash hidden under their beds if government didn't force them to open their wallets. Every penny of every total sale goes straight to the owner's pile of money, they wouldn't even pay employees I'd the government didn't make them. That's why government is such an important part of the economy, they're forcing businesses to do whatever useless crap they think is necessary, from licenses to permits, and giving those fees to the government creates more jobs than the business itself. You're not just rubbing a business, you're keeping several beurocrats from starving.
    So just shut up and do and spend and function exactly what the politicians made up their minds that you should do. Because they clearly, with their years of campaigns and raising funds through any means necessary, know far more about your business, community, family and even yourself than you do.

    USA is a highly subsidized retail market. Americans couldn’t afford the cost of living in other 1st world countries. If the populace started a trend of purchasing actual market prices, that means wages would have to increase in order to maintain status quo quality of life. Natural inflation has been tampered with in USA since 1980’s.
    So, keep status quo. 99% populace gets access to more stuff that doesn’t matter, not real property, without increased wages. 1% get profits. Banks get loan interest, not principal. Politicians get to raise debt ceiling (correction...lower the floor of the debt catacombs). God bless America.

    Love your work, but this time I got to disagree. The issue isn't raising prices for supply and demand, there are people down the street trying to charge $60 for a small bottle of hand sanitizer and even more for masks, and people are actually buying it because they don't want to risk their children or their parents dying because they brought Covid-19 into the house. Old people are also getting completely screwed by raised prices on things they need to survive. I like to hope that people will only be reporting the price gougers and not the people raising prices reasonably on hard to get items, but without some kind of order in place things start to fall apart. Every time I open my phone or chrome I see a news story about someone getting arrested or called out for buying a crap load of TP, hand sanitizer, masks, or etc and trying to sell for a greatly inflated price. My personal favorites are the ones where they try to get a refund and are told no by the managers.

    It’s highly unlikely a small business will be killed by a hand full of reports. Price gauging is a thing, especially in desperate times.
    In reality, a larger business price gauging will most likely soke up money then would have otherwise been spent on smaller businesses. And the whole ‘let them charge whatever they want, it’s ok because customers will just not say for anything over priced’ argument goes out the window with necessities like food and medicine. That’s why the free market felled to give us good healthcare.

    • @willhiggins9563

      Ethan Lion7 Just making logical conclusion, people have been price gauged for essential goods during hard times.

    • @swesleyc7
      @swesleyc7 4 роки тому

      You make a fair point. It's different because the govt. forces non-essential businesses to close. If they do force them then the govt. should be prepared to give grants. But if they are allowed to stay open it's unethical to horde and gouge customers during a demand spike, which is inevitable someone will. Like anyone, I smell opportunity as well. You can't force them to close AND fine them for price increases. They have livelihoods of their own.

    • @jacobhargiss3839
      @jacobhargiss3839 4 роки тому +1

      The example shown was not necessarily just price gouging ( which would be an extreme inflation) but included all increases in price. Theoretically that could include anything higher than normal.

    • @WeTheInternetTV
      @WeTheInternetTV  4 роки тому +5

      How much should things cost? (Please be specific.)
      And when does raising the price on that item become "price gouging"?
