- California's in a mess right now and the sad part is, some of it could have been avoided.
Every state's economy is struggling amid COVID-19, but California's government has made things even worse for its citizens with Assembly Bill 5 (aka AB-5).
Months ago, when AB-5 was passed, freelance contractors were worried. Now, they are angry. Their government has made it harder for them to do their jobs in the midst of one of the worst economic situations in modern times.
What could California do to fix the mess they've made? Let us know in the comment section. Let us know in comment section! And click the bell to turn on notifications from us, so you don't miss any of our new videos.

Keep voting the same way, keep getting the same results.
Definition of Insanity.
Same results??? Seems like a steady decline on results...but hey,
Yep. All the featured people who are incredulous at these controlling, pro-union, over-reaching politicians are people who wouldn’t vote GOP in a million years. You all made your bed. Now, quit complaining as you sleep in it. Everyone featured will probably vote the DEM ticket in Nov 2020. Enjoy your race to the bottom.
Lol... Damned if you do Damned if you don't. The game is rigged. The powerful always win, the masses lose. The trick is to play games we can win.
The sad part is the vast majority of CA counties are red.
I hate to say this but many of you in California voted for these people. What do you expect?
Yep, but I'm sure when they do it all over again in Texas it will work. You can take a person out of the stupid, but you can't take the stupid out of a person.
Let's be real here... A lot of dead people probably voted for them, too.
Be specific - by "these people" you mean - democrats.
Government: If you think the problems we create are bad, just wait until you see our solutions.
... and if you think the problems our solution cause are bad, wait till you see our solution to *those* problems.
"but wait, where does it all end?"
It doesn't. It's problems all the way down.
BINGO!!!
And they all pack up and move to Texas and continue to vote the same way they did while in California. Stupid is as stupid does.
@Robert Ramsey Keep the neoliberal idiots from going abroad so we can save the world from idiocy and economic destruction. 👍
And Arizona, my state now has a lib governor who just vetoed parents having access to their children’s medical records over age 12 to 18. Parents gonna pay the bill but can’t get the records to give to new drs.
"And I feel that she does feel that way... but I don't think it's true."
Isn't California the state of "my truth"?
How misogynistic of her to not believe a woman's story.
For a legislator in California, truth is whatever the unions say is the truth.
Yeah, the lady should've come back with #BelieveAllWomen, and then seen what Gonzalez did with it, lol.
@@lepke1979 - This is a truism, but, like with so many other things, the dominant political interests in CA are telling everyone else where to get off, using the state to enforce their preferences. I doubt the protests of these freelancers are going to result in any political change in that state. The fact is they didn't have enough clout to stop the law from being passed.
Yea, it ends up being a self defeating proposition.
@@evidencebasedfaith6658 - Doesn't that seem to be the way everything goes on the Left? They go one way one day, and then another way the next, that defeats what they were pursuing earlier.
Year 1: My body my choice
Year 2: Well, actually, your doctor shouldn't be allowed to treat you with that procedure/medication.
What???
Month 1: Masks don't help
Month 2: Wear a mask, or you're a MURDERER!!!
???
Their assembly woman and governor are monsters.
All democrats
And voters
Dead shh dema
'I feel that she does feel that waaaaaay but I don't think it's true'
I don't that I could construct a more disingenuous and condescending sentence on my best day
I give you California's elected officials in a nutshell
You need a college education to understand a construct like that
Don’t blame her. Blame the people who’d vote for a potato, as long as it had a blue DEM tag on it. This catastrophe is well earned by the people of California. This didn’t happen to them. This happened because of them.
@@trail_bosschisum4179 yeah preferably that teaches nothing of a value, just endless conjectures .
As a nationally certified, professional interpreter for over 18 years, Lorena Gonzales and AB 5 have effectively demolished my entire freelance profession. When CA finally ends the "lockdown", Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-Blind people are going to feel the ramifications of having little-to-no interpreter, translator and captioning access (which includes education, medical care, court system, and all levels of entertainment and public access). I imagine many lawsuits citing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) coming down the pike soon after. This law is shameful. Lorena Gonzales is a charlatan. And as a born-and-raised Californian, AB 5 has forced me to look for a more economically-friendly state. My husband and I are already one foot out of CA; I will be taking my Master's degree, national interpreter certifcation, skills and tax money with me. AB 5 is the death knell to California's economy, tax base, and future.
Texas. Just leave any liberal leaning politics at the state border please.
For the love of all that is whole, go down with your ship. Cali transplants are destroying the Midwest.
@@wolfza2630 I just came back from visiting my father in TX. Nice place. And don't worry- not all Californians vote for Left insanity. We're just outnumbered here.
@@debtfreerv6611 Sounds great. You'll get to see him more often.
@@scowler92 We're liberty-minded, and did not vote for any of this insanity in CA. We're not the kind of Californians you need to worry about.

I swore this was ReasonTV and I forgot that I had unsubbed to them. This was a great video guys!
If you thought this was Reason, you unsubbed from them, and you think this is a great video why did you unsub from Reason?
@@deoxal7947 they got pretty pozzed and I really only visited for John Stossel's content.
@@MrRetroRhythm What does pozzed mean?
Stossel is one guy from Reason I kinda don't like actually. For videos like this one for instance:

I understand the case for legalizing proustitution, that the government is ineffective at preventing exploitation and legalizing it would actually reduce that. However he goes from that case to proustition is a good thing in itself. I think he gives a bad name to libertarians.
Indeed, this lacked the humor typical of a WTI video. I could easily imagine this one either from from Reason or the Foundation for Economic Education. ua-cam.com/channels/ialsmUlTRABKPw31VDx1eQ.html
We The Reason TV!
We have the government that Californians voted for.
Costal Californians.
Illegals
just DONT git it....
How is this not affecting Hollywood? In essence actors and musicians are “independent contractors”.
That's why Atlanta is the new Hollywood. Georgia is the film capital now.
I think you missed the part were they said deep pocket lobbyists could get an exemption
They're union members.
Actors and film crews are union
Remember the technicians and other creatives and artists. Cinematographers, Sound Mixers, Hair, Makeup, Estheticians, Boom Operators, G&E etc..... There are many nonunion projects being crushed
8:35
I can tell she lying through her smile
I remember last year that a ton of freelance writers and journalists became unemployed because of that bill. I'm surprised that it is still active
So the legislators just acted in a way that the people didn't actually want or demand? Seems consistent.
This meme channel is making better news than mainstream
The point is to make people low cost employees, while destroying their businesses.
Sadly that’s the difficulty. It’s a focus on employment rather than work. Employees need some protection but the people with the real power are the ones with distributed income (celebrities etc) who can pick their own work or businesses with a multiple clients.
How does WTI not have a couple of million subs?
It's highly likely they have been shadowbanned by UA-cam. Their content is widely popular and entertaining and does not fall in line with UA-cam's views. So they never go viral.
Gonzalez should be a teacher...her attitude of 'anything that I can't appreciate or understand has little or no value' is perfect for the old 'those who can do, and those who can't teach'
9 most horrifying words in English “We are from the government and we are here to help “ R. Regan.
Not trying to be one of "those guys", but that is 11.
"I don't think its true!" What a concept Thought rather than Fact!
What a dis gusting wo men, and all the Gig workers will still vote dem
So which one of the keywords got my comment deleted the first time I posted it, I wonder
UA-cam is very concerned with free speech it doesn't control. Might disrupt the unity of the commune.
I know this has probably been asked multiple times but WHO IS VOTING FOR THESE PEOPLE? 😵😠
Idiots?
Anyone can make a mistake once, some people twice thinking it will get better...Then you have people who never learn.
Academics, public sector workers, 25 year old baristas with gender studies degrees, and idiots who subscribe to Marxism.
We have to many of ex California libs coming to Colorado our governor came from there and they are destroying this state
Wow so bad for the little guy
I'm so glad you guys are out there uncovering the BS
Notice how Newsome has captured the cadence and style of Barry O... mishegoss!
One of the pearls of wisdom my father bequeathed to me was "never trust someone that smiles ear to ear while answering a serious question."
Excellent Video!
Thank you very much!
So this all started in 2004 when a company randomly deemed its employees independent contractors and 2 dudes sued "on behalf of" 1800 people and now we (gig workers) feel the effects of this stupid legislature from TWO dudes back in 2004 16 years later 😑😑
Did it stay ‘just two dudes’ or did the other employees start joining in.
It affects me as a owner operator truck driver , it affects hair stylists the list is long & vast .
There is a recall effort on Gavin Newsome...I urge all Californians to sign the petition....despite Newsome's house arrest.
Thank you for posting this , I signed it 3 weeks ago in my city Vallejo .
This video needs to be aired on NPR, PBS, CNN, CBS, etc.
But but but.. who do they vote for? Sorry, but not so much.
Thanks Lorena and AB 5 for F*cking Everyone up.
That smile in the end.... crocodiles looked friendlier.
I subbed for the humor. While this and some other videos aren't funny, they're very thought-provoking and eye-opening. Thanks for all you do, guys.
Isn’t she the one who tweeted “f*** Elon Musk” or something?
Worth pointing out non union jobs exempt from this law are also among biggest campaign contributors to assembly members who voted for it.
Can we talk about her smile at the end? It was creepy as hell......
It was probably edited that way.
Do you know what editing is?
We the Internet TV Altering something. Like changing the color of a image, or trimming bits of a video out.
@@willhiggins9563ya, bc We The Internet _obviously_ utilized a deep-fake to create her creepy, dead-behind-the-eyes, unconvincing "no"; promptly followed by that terrifying smile they "edited" in🙄🙄
Liz P Seriously, I was just making a off hand comment. (And what this with people obsessing over the smiles of female politicians?)
What, do you all want politicians to abandon complex laws they right up because a few people point out flaws?
Love these short documentaries along with the comedy sketches. Keep up the awesome work!
Beware of those who claim to be doing something for your own good. It’s most likely never going to be good for you.
Good, informative, investigative content guys. Keep it up.
Maybe they should vote democrat. Oh wait. 🤦♂️
no one realizes that contractors have more rights than actual employees because they aren't expected to punch a time clock at a certain time for a certain amount of time for a certain amount of days Their work hours vary depending on assignment and whether they feel like working that day. Ideally we'd all be all contractors
The video did not mention California’s burgeoning immigrant population which added to the number of low-skill workers well before COVID-19. At least the part-time “gig” jobs offered some relief so the unemployed could become “underemployed.” But Gonzolez does not comprehend the unintended consequences that AB5 has on the poor.
Sadly, the burden that California places on employers, large and small alike, will trend towards more companies leaving California and minimizing the labor content in all goods and services. McDonalds is testing french fry robots.
I lack the capacity to feel sorry for them. They voted for these people, they deserve everything that they're getting right now.
This is a beautiful example of how market economics allow for new, innovative ways for people to work and live, whereas centralised planning is not only incapable of facilitating the same economic flourishing, but instead destroys it.
I really liked it. Super high production quality and well researched. Good music too
That would destroy any budding, business. Merely to pander to their base
I became self employed to get away from the rat race and working a 9-5...
California has entered chat.
These are good. I love the comedy of We the Internet. Keep on it. But also more of this. You do great documentaries for this channel. I missed this sort of thing ever since the deep dive into campus current culture.
You know, the problem with all such Laws is that they are not introduced after talking to real stake holders. These populist legislators try pleasing their voters by bringing in such ideology driven Bills even though an overwhelming majority of these legislators are not even real stake holders or are not going to benefit directly or indirectly. It must be made a rule that all such specific Bills should be introduced only after surveying real stake holders.
This is so important!
Another fantastic vid by Rob Montz.
Very Colin and Samir-esqu. Great job everybody who worked on this, super engaging.
This was phenomenally well done, thank you for bringing this situation more attention.
California got exactly what they voted for. Democracy in action!
You are correct, we got it. But i sure Hell did not vote for any of it.
Look at the districts and you can see not all of california is looney left communist dumb donkey dicks.
I agree with what you are saying, I like your channel and I live in LA County. None of this matters. No one in CA is listening. They are not interested in any view that’s not Progressive Dem. I’ve had Dem friends that have moved to TX. I’ve asked them, “ Will you vote the same in TX when you get there since you had to leave CA cause of Prog Dem legislation. They have all looked at me like I had three heads and angrily told me off explaining that the Dems had nothing to do with the reason they must now leave CA for work and affordable housing. It’s a disease and it can’t be cured.
I live in California. I was being courted for a job at a newer business that hadn't grown enough for another full-time employee. It was going to start out as-needed contract work and grow from there (perhaps eventually to full-time) as there is quite a bit of an eb and flow to the market for that particular line of work. Since 85 I haven't received a call back. I don't even blame them. It's not their fault some self-righteous lawmaker killed my dream job.
If you ‘dream-job’ is a tiny little contract gig, that would have been gone the second that small company under preformed, with the vague hope that you might be made a full employee at some point, maybe you have issues deeper then some law.
Will, how many employees do you have? Has AB-5 changed the way you do business?
We the Internet TV I’m am neither a business owner, or live in California, so no.
But I do have experience being a part time worker hoping more work, only to find myself without a job. (I wasn’t in too vulnerable of a financial position that the time, so don’t feel too bad).
@@willhiggins9563 You are working on a lot of incorrect assumptions. I have 2 other jobs already, one of which I would move away from if the right opportunity came my way. The business owner was trying to grow the business and contracting is a very low risk way of doing that as opposed to hiring a part time employee. He could drop someone that didn't work out immediately. I have the fortune of having fairly flexible days and hours already, so finding time in addition to what I've got going on already wouldn't be a problem. If it was a risk, you'd have a point. However, I'm not relying on that job, just really wanted it. This is music btw and if you're not familiar with how the music industry works, a large % is contract work before it is steady.
idemus168 Fine, most music based job probably don’t need these kinda of regulations.
Great video 👍
This is not to help anyone. It is only to punish the ride companies
No no no no no no no no! It is to reward the Unions! This bill has the Unions fingerprints all over it.
The Unions donate to the politicians (read "Bribe") and the legislature does their bidding.
I love Rob Montz work. Very Good as always.
Thanks for this, I often feel I am alone and forgotten, while we all know misery loves company.
This bill annihilated my livelihood at a time when I was perfectly positioned to serve companies dealing with the virus.
So now we have to move and set up our businesses in another state in order to do business for California entities. Congratulations legislators, you just awarded my income taxes to another state.
I love California and its people, but the politics at the state level are odious.
Great video & very informative!! Best wishes
THIS is why we, the people, DON’T want the government interfering in our lives 🤬
Did you hire Linus as the voiceover for this video? Wow. Good choice
How do these people get voted in? Do they get voted in?
Mail in ballots is my guess.
Point well made.
"I feel she feels that way" lmaaooooo
You could write a similar story about the "living wage" legislation that's been passed in various cities and states. It doesn't affect the same people. It's worst effect is on young people looking for their first job, so they can gain some work experience.
Don't forget. Governor Newsome owns a winery that never closed.
I am soooooooo glad I am Self Employed Unemployed & don't have to deal with this B.S. I'm on the Freebie Gravy Train until I'm really screwed.
That was very different and very good.
True journalism.
An amazing aspect of rideshare apps like uber or food delivery apps like doordash is that they don't NEED to be full time. You can work however much or little you want. I've done it nightly to increase income when family issues came up, then only did it one or two night per week when the issues went away. I had the freedom to choose how much I worked for them. How's that for pro choice?
California State the next Detroit.
Great video
I kept thinking I'm supposed to be laughing, but I wasn't. It might be because I live in LA.
My problem with all of this is that the people that are leaving CA are bringing their politics with them and dragging down the states where they relocate. Look at how they are changing ID, MT, TX, UT, etc.
Companies/people run away from outrageous taxes
Nothing new
Thanks for reminding me to never move to California
I love in Southern California and hope that we don't have to leave California like so many others, but after high school, I'll probably have to move out of the state.
The "hard work" ethic doesn't work when there is no work.
3:40 “But I don’t think it’s true” ugh, she sounds like my mother. Given all the facts in the world, down to specific examples, but chooses what she wants to believe. They even look similar.....
The scary part is that these same ignorant people are moving to get away from this, then vote the same way where they go.
In other words, ruining the chances of change.
I’m surprised UA-cam let u post this
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. Thanks for another great video.
I just want to say, those of you leaving California for states such as Texas, Idaho, Tennessee, etc - please leave Californian politics in California. Don't turn us into what you left.
I checked the address, it directed me to working partnerships USA. Is that related to the American federation of musicians? Or did they change the address?
Laws made from feelings not facts.
So glad I left that toilet bowl of a state in 2013
8:33 best part
The ultimate Karen. Can you imagine freely choosing to have this busybody tell you what to do?! She won't tell you what to do, only other bad people who will then give you money? BARF
There is such a thing as a sociopath and that lady is clearly one
I'm here in California. This forced situation only benefits the top
How am I supposed to go to bed now after seeing that demon woman? 😱
The ones who know what they're doing have the goal of making everyone a government employee. In that case the people who run the government have near absolute control over everyone else by making it illegal to make money or provide for yourself.
Yep, AB5 is a disaster for the economy. If we hadn't gotten hit with the Coronavirus, it would have done a ton of damage on it's own. Now that we have the crisis of the Pandemic, it's been overshadowed and made things so much worse. And the recovery will be so much slower. I believe that freelance and gig work is what helped people recover from the 08 crash.
I’m on the other coast so haven’t heard of the law but I’m surprised I haven’t because this is so egregious and strips people of their freedom to work the way they want to work.
Hey, you elected them, you live with them.
Californians please stay in California. You voted for them!
