Saw a show in Boston and he literally said "take any vinyl you want" (for free) and I handed him cash and just said thank you and he signed all of them. One of the most hard working/passionate musicians you'll meet.
God I love discovering someone new. Where has he been all my life? Brilliant!! Scott Walker, New Order - all kinds of vibes going on here.
He literally encapsulates every feeling, memory and meaning in every song, like hes remembering what the lyrics mean at the moment, kinda like conjure something from those lyrics
saw him open for Ariel Pink in SF a while ago... what a great discovery
...And the Rain sounds so good in this rendition
love this performance
Wow 🙏👏
John is great on record, but you just don't get that intense dedication he has without seeing him live. Look at this man, this is a man who puts everything into every lyric he sings.
Wish he would come to Brazil
Seriously. I love his live performances. The recordings are great of course, but it’s not as touching once you see him perform.
There's something interesting about John Maus plainclothes, average joe look. With a singing style like that, you'd think he would have some funky costume on. I like the minimalism in this kind of synth pop though.
what does "this kind of synth pop" mean, who else sounds like this? genuine question not rhetorical
JUST LIKE DAVID BYRNE!

I will not rest until i see this man live
*update*
I saw him live a couple of months back, its one of the best shows i have ever seen and the day after i had the priviledge to sit with him and his band at a local Taco Bell.
Godspeed to John and his bandmates! (Rest in peace Joe, i will never forget you)
Seems like your wish came true better than you could have imagined huh? That's awesome.
@@captainchippie4454 absolutely! I still carry that moment with me and i think of it a lot. It never fails to make me smile when i think of said moment!
versnellingspookie now that’s what I call a wish come true!!! ✨
I'm so envious of you! Now that's a memory I'm sure you'll cherish forever. Congratulations on a great achievement!
You can rest now !
Every guy in the band looks like a professional gamer. I like it.
I am a phantom over the battlefield
Maus looks like a professor though.
gamers are the most oppressed group
Professionnel gamers ? yes ! But not american pros because they're not fat enough... The drummer looks like a model compared to a genuine american video games enthusiast .... LOL !!
@@ALEXS-k8r Oh I know!
5:30 - the video editor felt like this was worth being seen.
Ha ha ha this is funny meme yes lololol
Veri good

Deep sadness.
RIP Joe.
PS: Thanks for all your wonderful bass lines
the drummer is underappreciated
Yeah. Maus compositions are really giving him a hard time
How? I think you're the only asshole under appreciating anyone
He’s drumming for Ariel Pink as well last time I checked.
Not as much as he used to be. He’s playing with other bands here and there. He’s exceptionally talented.
@@XDanimalzX is there footage of him playing with ap?

unbelievable. you can tell the band felt it too. that drummer is really good. nice work maus.
The way they're empowered by our god John
I know right, that part is so cathartic
Matt. 5. [45]
I got goosebumps once I pretended these were a few band kids that urged their cool (but down on luck) substitute teacher (Mr. Maus) to play the talent show with them
He actually was a substitute teacher
lol i actually had this teacher. He does shows at pubs part time and i see him every now and then and he always says "Hey! theres my rockstar!" whenever i see him. He was my teacher 15 years ago.
@@sherpaderpdingo3405 thats such a wholesome story. I would love to see him play.
HOLY SHIT
He's got that very energetic "crazy professor" vibe. In a good way.
john wears that shirt every day/live show, that is the john maus staple shirt
Joe Maus was the bass player, right? I wish him well and may he rest in peace.
he still alive dumb ass

Im a big fan of John Maus. Give the drummer some.....hes so on point
Yes Yes Rudeboy the drummer falls in love with me
that drummer tho - precision as its best - to make people thing that its actually computer generated beat is beautiful
when he talks he's kind of like a jim carrey character come to life
Man, you ruined John Maus for me, that's hilarious!
I'm so sorry for John's loss. I wish he could still play live like this. I hope he manages to keep making awesome music like always.

I feel that way all the time, feels like yesterday I was 19 hearing him, now I'm 27 and wonder wtf I have contributed to this world if anything at all

I went early to a J Maus show and by chance ran into him outside the venue by himself. He is just the same in person and a very amazing person and unbelievably kind and friendly. We spoke for 20 minutes. Very cool guy.

Eyes so intense, they're like a portal to another dimension, with a warm child's smile....how is he real, I love him.
He truly is a warm guy in person. We happily chatted for an hour after his show in New Orleans in '11. Highly intelligent yet very "down to earth" and quite approachable. Love him. MAD respect ♥
I was able to meet him twice, and got to chat with him for a bit after he played in Austin this year. I freaked out after a minute and panicked, and couldn't hold the convo up longer than that, haha, but he was very kind and generous. I'm so lucky I got to meet my musical hero. Glad you did too! :)

"SOMEBODY TELL ME THE TRUTH!"
And this live version sounds amazing!
Drums are Perfect!
Always professional... never pretentious.
John Maus is the ideal human
I wish John would let these intense, raw vocals come through more on the studio versions of these tracks...”And The Rain” in particular sounds so much better here than the album imo. Both are great but I love Maus live
This man is insane and I’m here for all of it. So damn authentic.

I wish John Maus had more appearances today
I sometimes cry as I listen to this. Such a beautiful performance.

John Maus has really stepped it up over the last year with the new band!
John's vocals on this version of streetlight give me chills. Fucking crazy.
My tiny, Serbian heart can't handle this.

TheLucidIntermission apparently, according to johns ex ,the one he was recently married to,she posted on Instagram that it was a drug overdose, but that has not been confirmed at all yet. According to her there’s a drug problem within the band or something. The whole thing is really sad and I can’t imagine what everybody who was close to joe was. WHAT A PLEASANT SURPRISE
RIGHTS FOR GAYS OH YEAH!
RIGHT NOW
This Nah man, he was inspired by Howard Dean saying it in a campaign speech and so he wrote the song, wasn't mocking
Harry Redmond, much more complex than that. Maus has critiqued the term 'homosexuality' and 'gay' and even 'rights' many times and sees it as a modern construct. The point of "rights for gays" is "following the idiom through to its absurd conclusions where interesting things are more likely to happen". The song is supposed to be absurd, comical, scary, utopian, dystopian etc all at the same time.
+Alex Lewis
to quote him: “I don’t believe in rights, inasmuch as they necessitate economic inequality, and I don’t believe in gays, as there are as many sexes as there are humans.” i’m not sure if he takes the same attitude in terms of rights, as he seems to have drifted away from his old French left positions some.
I wish this was an hour long. I just revisited the we must become album and was like "oh yeah I forgot, this is the best music ever made." Now I've listened to only that album for the last month. It's become almost an obsession. I feel that soon enough I will turn into some type of Howard Hughes character, only instead of locking myself in a room with 3 inch long fingernails and surrounded by Mason jars full of my piss, I'll be listening to that album in my shower with headphones on or while I'm in line at the grocery store. There has got to be a support group for this right?
No Cop Killer? Incomplete set...
Austin Bennett this man is interesting Viper brought me here
Cop Killer is a good one. I didn't want to watch the whole vid to see whether they did Hey Moon or not. Still dig their sound..
Only a year ago that I discovered John Maus, whether he likes it or not, I can still say he gave me some hope in this fucking abysmal universe, when I was in a low period, to continue striving for good! I'm no idolizer of really anything, but I dig him and the music! Keep Pushing On, Everyone! Do Your Best! Listen to those Walls of Silence ua-cam.com/video/kBdxme6EKcE/v-deo.html
p.s. hey everyone, listen to this again with really good headphones...flowing, super tight! good work getting this right on, guys! proud of ya! exactly what i was hoping for from a kexp recording, to hear you live clearly as possible vs. the club. :) thank you!
I was in the same level, John maus is no myth he's here.
Luis Benitez what do you mean?
He gives me hope.
Luis Benitez he inspires me too, his transparent process as a person. I appreciate his human-ness. He inspires me, to work harder.
Outstanding performance! And props to the drummer for that Gary War shirt, very nice.
New Maus fan here , f'n fantastic set. So warm + in sync + good feeling.
the line between genius and madman is said to be thin, John Maus is certainly on that high end of genius, the kind that breaches "madman" love this guy...
I feel like I’m at my high school talent show in the early 80s, only the music is exponentially better. Way to fuckin go Austin, Minnesota.
weird seeing a shoutout to austin on here, cheers man!
Oh my John Maus got Married, Who is Compatible with John Maus??!!

She's an abstract painter. Kika Karadi

I love listening to John talk. :)
John u are so amazing I need your music everyday in my life
Best 18 minute and 57 seconds of my life
This is life changing to me!!!!
I work outside as a biologist along the pipeline in remote areas of the Mojave desert and sometimes play his music as I’m walking around and the birds come around like crazy. John Maus is certainly appreciated outside of our species 😂.
"Time moves so fast these days. This spring, a robin nested in a shrub right outside my kitchen window. She was ill at ease with me at first. I watched her tend over her egg, and then take care of her chick when it had hatched. I would surf the Internet sometimes for recordings of Robin song, for example, the songs of dawn and dusk, and I would play those recordings as loudly as I could, watching her reaction. Her nest was empty too quickly"

Like Beefheart said, music comes from the birds. They know melody at an instinctual level
They only look like birds...
Touchdown birds
Birds aren't real.
They're MOSSAD/CIA syping devices.
Wish they would've played find out or walls of silence as the bass line is orgasmic, but I'm glad he went for the touchdown
Those unique moments you feel the power of a live performance 5:36 ! Rest easy Joe you´ll never be forgotten!
Jesus. I’m years late to the Maus party, but Touchdown needs to be Monday Night Football’s theme song during the next inevitable Ice Age and/or Black Death.
He's so intense and passionate when he sings! Almost like he's performing death metal! 😂❤
The drummer is killing it! Amazing show!
My goodness I really dig this dude's music but whenever I am around general population - I am a framed creep.

I’m very happy to see him not ‘jack-knifing at the waist’ here, and I hope he never does that again. The worst thing in the world is to throw out your back. Self-injury is unnecessary to this great music. This is so much better - a direct focus on singing, and in the presence of supporting musicians. This is the best live video of John I’ve seen yet, thank you - and thank you John, for going easier on your body.
Love his music! Hope he comes back someday!
He's coming back!

John Maus for president
Maus gives me the vibe of someone that's just been pulled up by the police for a broken tail light but actually has a dead body in the trunk.
John Maus is the poet laureate and resident philosopher of indie rock
I saw him in Boston back in February, even though there was no band he still put on a stellar show
Rest easy Joe. Love.
I notice he usually sings up an octave when he performs live, but in most of his studio recordings he sings in the "signature" lower baritone register. I guess it's probably more audible from the audience's perspective and easier to sing up an octave live.
John Maus is a tough guy, so talented. Thx lovely KEXP! ^^
I love this man so much. It's amazing to hear him be so self deprecating about his music
