Depends on their relationship. I'm a 39 year old white guy from Memphis who's married to a 30 year old black woman from Harlem. We joke about race all the time, but it never comes up when we argue. Because she knows there is no one I respect more than her, and vice versa. Funnily enough, she loves the way cotton looks. She even bought some cotton stems in a vase for our dinner table decoration, lol!

People have forgotten the art of teasing. When I was growing up, you teased people that you were comfortable with and liked. It takes a close relationship and an understanding of the person’s personality, also an innate sense of what their boundaries are and what might offend them. My great-grandmother grew up in Kentucky in the 1920's, she picked cotton on her father farm throughout her young life. When I was a baby girl, along with my brothers, she had a patch of cotton so we could learn how to pick it, and I was taught how to spin it for sewing thread. It is one of my favorite memories of her.

I think white people get offended about this WAY more than black people do. Would I, as a white man (37yo) have made that? God no, even back in the early 2000s id be afraid of a lynching.
