I think the new JAS Gripen generation is a really good plane considering the cost vs capabilities ratio. There's a problem competing with the americans in particular, with the political pressure involved in selling to other countries. JAS has a tremendous turnaround time on ground and is dirt cheap compared to many other jets. It has seen action in Libya, Bosnia and Afghanistan though, something many people are not aware of. It has mainly been used for front line advanced recon so far, but is a very capable multirole plane.

Lets say you fired 5 missiles, then one missile took the lead role and all 5 of them took different routes to the target automatically. One hit was enough to cut a frigate in half. It could also be serviced in the field by conscripts and had a turnaround time that put them back in the air within around 10 minutes. They had the nickname "The supreme commander's hammer" since they would be the first to attack an invading force on the Baltic sea. 90000 hp (with AB) Swedish thunder.

I believe mach 2+ was the somewhat vague description of its top speed; presumably somewhere around Mach 2.2 (at altitude). And speaking of versions, J 37 wasn't one of them. Not in 1971 nor any time before or after - AJ 37, SK 37, SH 37, SF 37 and finally JA 37 made up the entire program of Saab Viggens.

Correct. The JA has the bigger fin. And a different drop-tank, and a built-in cannon and so on. But this AJ-37 museum piece, was it really modified to AJS standard before retirement? It is marked as the AJ was from the beginning in the 1960s - the AJS was painted in lo-viz grey in the 1990s. 🤔

Saab says the speed is 2.3 mach. In reality the speed was 3.2 mach.....The only plane who has locked SR 71. When i was a Young boy.the sparkling sound was the guarantee for that we have a strong military Power against the russians in sweden. The sparkling sound was ordinary. Every day.
