    I really miss Viggen, growing up in the 80-90s right under their exercise airspace, the roar from it was something special, not only the sound but you could truly feel the power, your body shaked, the house shaked, the earh shaked, it was amazing. JAS 39 Gripen flies overhead sever times per week & it doesn't sound bad but it's more of an earpiercing sound, sometimes painful to listen to it's high pitch whine, nothing matches the low frequency high energy thunder of Viggen

      Det var ren och skär kraft i den motorn. På den tiden skulle vi ju kunna jaga ikapp utländska företag som var på väg mot Sveriges gräns.
      Det skulle gå undan ju och då behövdes det rejält med kraft 😉

    Well i'm born and raised just outside F7 wing of Såtenäs (My father did 42 year of service in SAF), there were limitasions to peacetime landing and take off noice, but when it came to the incident awarness flights (mostly Soviet, but also western), a rote of Viggens started with full thottle afterburners and rattle our china off the shelves! Talked to a former Viggen pilot in the spring of -18 and he claimed that, when Viggen was new, they tried to land it hard but the ground effect was so strong that they hardly exceeded 17 ft/s. That´s 11 mph (18 km/h) vertical speed. Would probably work on an aircraft carrier.

    Fun fact this is the only known fighter to get a Radar Lock on the Sr-71 Blackbird. The Viggin drivers would track SR's as the would follow the same route, the and then the Viggin drivers would track and Lock on to the Sr-71 despite extensive jamming on the SR's account. Crazy as the Mig-25 Foxbat wasn't know to have ever got a Radar Lock acourding to Soviet defector Lt. Victor Belenko a Foxbat driver himself. Gotta love Swedish radar technology.

      @@crunks2955 It was designed to be an interceptor, wheras the AJ37 was designed from the ground up as a interdiction strike aircraft. Only later on did they create the fighter variant in the JA37, there were engine optimization differences, avionics and payload differences.

    • @mrSkandalpolisen
      @mrSkandalpolisen 4 роки тому +7

      Elestro Air-soft oh no, all Viggen with the letter J (Jakt = interception) included in their version name were fully designed and used as interceptors.
      There was a slow transition from using the Draken to the Viggen stretching from 1972 (37 Viggen introduced in the Swedish Air Force) untill the mid 80's for the interceptor role but that is foremost due to the restricted numbers of the Viggen in the early 70's and ended with the J35 being technologically obsolete in the 80's.
      The Viggens with the letter J as the first letter in the name (such as JA 37 Viggen) was primarily designed for interception.
      I fully agree with @Jebediah Kerman on his comment above and I also have to say that When the JA37 entered service in 1980 it almost completely took over the role as the major interceptor.
      Of course the J35 had some remarcable features when it comes to interception and scrambling, one of the most impressive feature was the 1 minute capability to get airbourne (parked with engine shut off, fully loaded and prepared for interception, standing 'stand by' at the end of the runway (or at special locations very near the runway)).
      The Viggen takes a slightly longer time to get airbourne from a 'stand by' position, even thogh we are talking about some 10's of seconds in this matter, every second counts when it comes to interception.

    This fighter jet can literality start and land on a highway. It doesn't even take that long of stretch to do it either. Sweden used to have hundredths of those roads as air strips concealed for soviet. The reason was secure the ability to always react to threat and not risking to put all eggs in one basket like an conventional airbase. Today most of those hidden starting stretches has been dismantled. In present time, since the NATO/Russian arms race and rising tensions occur, we will probably start using that strategy again. We do need a lot more JAS 39 Gripen in service and battle ready. Almost 30 years of disarmament of our national defense has left us open and vulnerable if such conflict would rise. Lets hope not.

    • @azynkron
      @azynkron 5 років тому +2

      It's not that they are concealed. It's difficult to hide a 1km straight road. The idea was that there were so many so the enemy wouldn't know which one they used and if compromised, they could switch to another one within hours. However, if they were still in action they would use the normal airbases and they would only relocate if necessary.

    • @SonsOfLorgar

    Saab says its going 2.3 mach.... In reality this plane does 3.2 mach... This was the MONSTER of the Cold war!

    • @pumelo1
      @pumelo1 5 років тому

      I like Viggen, but your Mach 3.2 is fantasy! This plane its same like Mig-23. Saab 125KN ,Mig23 127KN.Saab Mach 2,3 MIg- 2,35. Russian Mig- 23 wihitout missiles can easy fly Mach 2,5 and test- pilots 2,65.
      I guess that Saab can reach this top speed 2,6 Mach close to Mig -23. Mig-23 is fastest one engine plane in service. Speedmeter in cocpit of Mig-23 is Mach 3,0 !!!

      Absolute bullshit. With that engine, RM8, and that frame mach 2 is really good. Mach 3.2 is nonsense. I served as a mech on JA37 in the early nineties

  • @jonnifjader

    Double the size of Gripen - half as effective though. A real beauty and beast at the time anyways....

      Considering the equipment of the last manufactured Vigges, and thus the latest upgraded ones, a few of which still exist is very classified when It comes to specs, data, equipment and other systems, Im not too sure it's only half as effective. It would do just fine I promise you.

    • @justforever96

      You re nuts. The Viggen may be a lot of things, but "beautiful" is not one of them. I mean look at that chunky fuselage, the weird bowed-out spine, the blunted nosecone, the wings shaped like a barn roof profile and big, cartoon-like canards. Excellent plane, but not beautiful. A Saab Draken is "beautiful", or an F-104. Maybe a Rafale or Mirage. A Spitfire (the English haven't made any beautiful planes since then, although they managed a few that were "attractive").

    Saab 37 Viggen was epic! I do have to wonder, ......does the JAS 39 Gripen have any such reverse thrust and can it pull off such easy and quick turn-around??

    • @erikaskeroth9720
      @erikaskeroth9720 Рік тому

      The JAS 39 Gripen has no reverse thrust, the Gripen uses its canards as massive air brakes. But it can turn on a dime and is extremely maneuverable on the ground for the fastest turnaround time. About 8 min to 15 min at a road base with a trained mechanic and 5 conscripts to fully equip, refuel and brief the pilot on his next mission via radio so the pilot doesn't even have to open the canopy.
      This video shows the canards pretty good: ua-cam.com/video/w3qjfeEHJ-U/v-deo.htmlsi=modMZG8WaAR8I_QJ

    Low speed pass was very impressive, F-104 at that IAS would have zero roll control and probably result in a smoking hole in the ground!

    • @azynkron
      @azynkron 5 років тому

      It had excellent control even at low speeds due to how the canards were placed and worked. That waving to the audience is not as easy as it looks and most fighters would stall if they tried it.

      Yep, i growed up near Karup, the main base of the Danish Drakens, and a quiet day was a LONG THUNDER, , have newer heard the Wiggen op close, but it is by, told to , be a little bit more, and the Grippen, my ears tells me, , just from using , inbuilt mics, she's is the Queen, ,, . No matter, the Swedes, have don , an amazing job. The USA and The Soviets, must have, WTF, from time to time, .

      I've had both Viggen and Gripen fly by very low over my country house. Its not that loud actually. But it does sound impressively. Since they are so fast, you don't really hear them coming until they are really close.

    The Viggen jet engine has no limitation of speed, as a rocket ! But to manage this the Gas trottle was limited given Jet fuel. If not the fuel tank would be empty very quickly and jeopardising the flight
    Technically it can fly to the moon!
