An exquisite background voice on most of the Steely Dan albums is none other than Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers. He gives extra richness to the deep and complex sound Steely Dan delivers album after album.
A lot of people believe this song is based on the activities of David Fine, who was involved in the bombing of a building at the University of Wisconsin in Aug of 1970. It was meant as a protest against the university working with military contractors, but an innocent person who was not expected to be in area was killed in the bombing. Thus the "luckless pedestrian". In addition, Fine's father was indeed a book keeper in Oregon. I think the "Crossed my old man" part is that the father paid for the son to go to the school and was thanked by his son doing this terrible deed resulting in the death of someone. Fine was on the run from the law for a long time. The part about the showdown with the dynamite is editorial by steely dan. It never happened.

So easy to get caught in their grooves. Even so, how did you miss those lyrics?! The guy is holed up somewhere with a case of dynamite, pleading with cops to not take him alive. Classic Steely Dan lyrics and characters!
I don't think he missed the lyrics.. he wanted some insight into the backstory.. which is the story that led up to the main story.. sometimes lyrics don't tell that part directly but they can be deduced from the lyrics.. and sometimes it is left entirely up to the listener to imagine what led up to it.. many examples but stairway to heaven by led zeppelin is one song open to many interpretations.. or babylon sisters by steely dan.. many different interpretations.. one of my favorites by them.. and just great lyrically.. like so many other of their songs!

One of the best intros ever. I play it on my acoustic around the fire sometimes and people just gasp. I was in High School when Pretzel Logic came out and my friends thought I was a dork for listening to them, eventually they came around
Yeah, one of my favorite movies EVER. But I don't think this really matches up. The twist of this song is that he's more afraid of his father than he is of death. Very different motivations. Al Pacino's character isn't motivated by fear as much as his sense of duty.
@Zach Fisher Don't Take Me Alive is about David Sylvan Fine, the youngest of the Sterling Hall bombers (at the University of Wisconsin- Madison) who was captured ins San Rafael, California in January of 1976. Despite the title of the song he WAS taken alive, spent three years in prison and eventually became a paralegal in Oregon. The 'luckless pedestrian' is the only casualty of the Sterling Hall bombing . In the press, David Fine's father was listed as a bookkeeper or salesman in the Portland, Oregon area.

Thing
This sound is a unbelievable amount of effort in the studio. Truly world class musicians all the way around.
These guys tell a story. It's like literature set to great music or, at the very least, a novel set to a groovy beat. Pop music don't do that anymore; they just manipulate your basic urges, man.Whoopy doo .. let's get dumb!
Pop music??? Dont ever insult Steely Dan like that. They are a Rock & Roll band thru and thru.
I know I'm two years late to the party but I LOVE all of Jamel's reaction videos to Steely Dan. Don't apologize, dude, you can't help but get caught in the groove when you're listening to Steely Dan. If you haven't reviewed "Any Major Dude" then hit that one up.
One of my all time fav's. Love Steely Dan! My 9 year old daughter's favorite (along with Bad Sneakers). So deep and complex and a joy to listen to. My daughter says take a listen to Showbiz Kids if you haven't already (I agree!)
Yes, yes, yes! You finally played it! I told you that you would dig it! I clicked a like, added it to my favorite's folder, great reaction video! I only ask that you listen/ react to Steely Dan's song "Babylon Sisters" the next time you do another Steely Dan reaction. Finally a brother who gets it! This makes me happy and excited! Love the reactions, reminds me of when I first listened to a lot of these different generas of music. Keep up the good work bro, I'll keep tuning in! Thank you, Thank you!
So easy to get caught in their grooves. Even so, how did you miss those lyrics?! The guy is holed up somewhere with a case of dynamite, pleading with cops to not take him alive. Classic Steely Dan lyrics and characters!
The story of desparate man begging for Suicide by Cop...not one you hear often in any musical genre.
Steely Dan, what an incredible band. I love their music, became a fan after the first album.
Hey Jamel, if you get caught up in the groove, just play it twice.
RickTBL hey, that's what I did, got caught up in the groove, then replayed it several times to figure out the lyrics, all before they had youtube lyric videos, lol.
Jamel, its really cool to see you "get" all this classic 70's music. I was lucky enough to be there from the mid sixties with The Beatles and the Stones through to punk in 1978. Ten years of epic stuff that will still cut it in a hundred years time.
"What an intro!" Brought to you by the maestro himself, Larry Carlton!
You have a simple brilliant UA-cam model. Love your channel!
the groove was Larry Carlton, everynote he played I could see it get you...that dude will blow your mind...was like I love SD and Carlton and they got together...lol
One of the best intros ever. I play it on my acoustic around the fire sometimes and people just gasp. I was in High School when Pretzel Logic came out and my friends thought I was a dork for listening to them, eventually they came around
Seems like the boys watched Dog Day Afternoon and decided to write a song. Dirty guitar work, great song.
Yeah, one of my favorite movies EVER. But I don't think this really matches up. The twist of this song is that he's more afraid of his father than he is of death. Very different motivations. Al Pacino's character isn't motivated by fear as much as his sense of duty.
@Zach Fisher Don't Take Me Alive is about David Sylvan Fine, the
youngest of the Sterling Hall bombers (at the University of Wisconsin-
Madison) who was captured ins San Rafael, California in January of 1976.
Despite the title of the song he WAS taken alive, spent three years in prison
and eventually became a paralegal in Oregon. The 'luckless pedestrian' is the only
casualty of the Sterling Hall bombing
. In the press, David Fine's father was listed as a bookkeeper or salesman in
the Portland, Oregon area.
@@tking1170 Oh, shall we get into a debate about authorial intent and contextualism?
tking1170 okay, but that kid probably watched Dog Day Afternoon so...
@@zackattack635 And Zach just hit on contextualism. I'm a housewife with a philosophy degree. In quarantine. Please argue with me. (Totally messing with you. But kinda not.)
Probably my favorite Steely Dan tune and Larry Carlton's greatest guitar solos ever.
One of the greatest intros of all time.
Truuuuuue, awesome intro
You make me smile bro....ya never fail to impress me with how open minded you are about ALL music!....And ya call it like ya hear it....I have subscribed!....Like i said ..All of your reactions make me smile!
