    Wow man,I didn't expect such an exhaustive answer to my question! Thank you so much, this video is very useful to me.
    Since I play prog rock with my band and all sounds you hear are played live with no playback, this will be a possible scenario with this setup I'm gonna go for: my left hand will play organ chords on the Nord (panel B), my right hand will play a lead synth sound on the first MIDI controller (panel B with Dual Keyboard function on the synth engine) and the singer will play other things like mellotron or synth bass with the second controller (panel A). So three independent sounds played concurrently generated only by the almighty NS3 ;)

    Excellent instruction, as usual. 🙂
    I think that one doesn't see 'midi-thru' on main keyboards is because most people will use take advantage of a keyboard like the NS3 (with its excellent keybed, mod-wheel, mod-stick, ability to split, plus A & B layers) to control other sound modules, not the other way around. One still sees 'midi-thru' on many old & new sound modules for that reason. (connecting bunch of vintage sound modules to a NS3 is what I'm planning to do).
    cheers,

Venturing down the other paths to explore Yamaha, Roland, Korg and many others would really require full-time availability to the channel and I'm not there yet. Update: unfortunately I didn’t realize the electro 6d doesn’t have the same panel functions as you demonstrate here on the Stage, so I can’t assign the different midi channels through the box, only one 😢 oh well! Had I a Stage, this would have worked perfectly (with the bass pedals through a b3 bass synth patch in the synth engine).
      Regardless, thanks for this!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 роки тому

      @@brandonreevesmusic5408 An yes, the panel options are different on the Electro. You still have an "external" option on the Electro 6 that can be assigned a separate MIDI channel. You'd set the Electro to "External to low" then put the organ engine to only play in the low part. Then drive the organ from an external keyboard and all you'll hear is the organ sound from the NE6. That leaves the other two engines to play directly on the NE6. Have a look at this video for the setup of all this if you haven't already seen it: ua-cam.com/video/YRYJf2J4fO4/v-deo.html (not sure this would help the situation, but thought I'd mention it just the same).

    Hi Marc, awesome video as usual! Do you know if the same thing works for USB? For example, the Yamaha P-125 does not have midi connections, only USB. Do you know if a USB cable can go into that midi interface, then a midi out from the interface to a Nord?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Mike. When it comes to MIDI over USB, that is a different animal. A USB port on an instrument requires a "USB Host" (like a computer) as an interface. Traditional MIDI, on the other hand, doesn't require a host. I think this video helps bring light to this topic: ua-cam.com/video/neXswJJcatc/v-deo.html. And watch this video after that: ua-cam.com/video/gTu6soq2j_k/v-deo.html.The bottom line here is that your Yamaha P-125 needs some form of a host in order for it's MIDI signal to be transferred out to the next device. The host can come in the form of a computer or an additional interface. You may be able to find a MIDI interface that includes both traditional MIDI in as well as a USB In which can then send a MIDI out to the Nord. This particular setup (USB In, with traditional MIDI in, then MIDI out) appears to be less common, so finding something may prove to be more of a challenge or expensive. Good luck!

    Hello Marc, great video on this. I am looking for a way to transfer some sounds I've created on my Nord Stage 3 to a cheap keyboard. This would be for gigging purposes, as I would rather not risk taking the expensive Nord everywhere, where it could get damaged and would rather instead have all the sounds readily available in a cheap keyboard instead. Do you know if this is possible and perhaps you may have a video for this? Thanks

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому

      Hi Jason. Thanks for your comment and question. Well, there is no easy/feasible way to do this that would still end up being practical for you I think. The Nord sounds are best coming out of an actual Nord keyboard and there is no real solution to duplicate this any other way that I can think of. You'll just have to be careful with your keyboard. Definitely get a case for it. Now, I wish that Nord made a module or a soft synth version for their keyboards thereby providing the exact functionality you're looking for. Sorry the news isn't better. Thanks for watching and good luck with your gigs. Oh and I've done a lot of gigs with Nord Keyboards over the years and the ONE time I damaged it was the one time I decided to transport without a case. It was my brand New Nord Stage 3 and I had a gig prior to the case arriving in the mail. Never again will I do that. I slightly chipped the left side (on the wood). Thanks for watching!

    Thanks so much for the great instruction! Is this possible with two synths sending midi into a Nord 4HP with one being a bass synth taking up the lower octaves and a poly synth taking up the upper octaves with a key split at C3?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 роки тому

      Hello @Jason O'Neill-Butler I just tested this with the Nord Electro 5 and it's a no go. The reason for this is because you can't have two different synth sounds in either split because there is only one synth engine. You could put a piano on the left split and a synth on the right but not two synths in either split. Something like this can be done on a Nord Stage 2/3.

    Awesome video, lets say I wanted to do something similar, have an external keyboard play the panels, I set the panels to midi channel 2 and 3, if I wanted to change the songs in song mode via midi program change, what should I send? For example should I have the global channel set to channel 1 and send my program change on that?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому

      Hi Scott. I'm back with my keyboards now and just tested all this. Works great. If you want to have program changes come from MIDI into your Nord Stage 3, you would assign that to the NS3 global MIDI channel. Then, along with that, you can have keyboard 1 sending information on a separate MIDI channel on panel A and a second keyboard sending separate MIDI information on panel B. So, to recap it could look something like this:
      1) Send Program changes and/or CC changes from a MIDI device to the NS3 on MIDI channel 1 (AKA "Global" MIDI channel on your Nord S3)
      2) Keyboard 1 set to MIDI channel 2 and triggering sounds on Panel A
      3) Keyboard 2 set to MIDI channel 3 and triggering sounds on Panel B
      Good luck!

      Hello Ceyhan Yes and No. Yes, Korg on A, Electro on B, and Stage on A and B. But when the Stage plays, it will be playing everything on A and B (not a third sound exactly). You could explore the "Dual Keyboard" aspects of the Stage 3 and that would in fact allow the Stage 3 to play independent sounds from either keyboard one or two. Check out the Dual Keyboard option in my video here: ua-cam.com/video/--ml3X1Lm-8/v-deo.html

    Hi Marc again... There is something that Im struggling since a few months, and could not find any explanation until now.
    It has to do with the master clock.
    How to set the start point in a master clock? Is it after the first key press, or is it once we activate it? Also is it possible to synchronise it with other midi clocks (like multitracks with click)

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому

      Hi Ricardo. This is a great idea for a video. I'm going to add it to the list to see if I can address some if not all of this question. It may be a bit to get that out I've been meaning to make a master click video to explain some of this.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому

      Hey Ricardo. I wanted to finish this answer here for you. First, the master clock (once set), will trigger when you first click the keys. Then there is this idea of "Keyboard Sync" which provides three settings that determine if the clock is reset after lifting all the keys or not. And yes, the master clock can follow a click track/ MIDI clock from an external device via the USB port or the standard MIDI in port. However, the Nord CANNOT send out clock data - it can only receive it. I sometimes use the Boss RC-505 Loop Station to drive the arpeggiator on the Nord Stage 3 which will follow the tempo of the loop station. Check out this video to see exactly how I set this up: ua-cam.com/video/dTax74uFVFs/v-deo.html
      Good luck!

    Can you do the same thing on the Electro 6D? Or you can just use one external controller in that case?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Рік тому

      Hello @francescogonnella you can do the same exact thing with the Nord Electro as well. The magic of this setup is in the little box that splits the MIDI. However, keep in mind that your sound engines have a bit more limitation than a Stage 3 in this regard. For example, you could have one keyboard controlling the engines assigned to the lower (using the "External Keyboard to Low" feature), while the 2nd external keyboard would control the other two engines so long as they were assigned to the upper part. You could have up to two external keyboards in this situation, each on a different channel.

    hi, I have a Nord electro 4 and I will like to have, for example. Piano on my Nord and Brass on my midi keyboard via midi cable. I have been trying to play with it but Kind of hard. Can you help me out?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 роки тому

      Hello @rastarito unless I'm missing something big, you should be able to simply connect a MIDI cable from the back of the Nord keyboard (from the MIDI Out jack) into the MIDI In on your external keyboard. Set both keyboards to the same channel. As you play the Nord keyboard, the external MIDI keyboard should play at the same time. Then it's just a matter of setting up your external keyboard to a brass sound. This is made easier if your external keyboard has the traditional 5 Pin MIDI Din jack (like your Nord does). Hope that helps get you started!

    Great video! Is there some MIDI latency using this setup? Thanks

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому

      Hello DrDAAD! great question. So in this setup, there is virtually no MIDI latency because the MIDI is going pretty much direct between the instrument and instruments. You have to listen to the keyboards at the source, however. In other words, if you want to hear all 3 keyboards with no lag, be sure to use a mixing board and have headphones connected directly to that. So the bottom line is using a hardware interface like demonstrated in the video here, should really introduce no noticeable lag in the chain that I'm aware of or have noticed in doing this kind of thing for years.

    i have a Nord 61 key. Can i midi it with a reface CP. Like to get the CP sounds on the bigger keys, thanks.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  8 місяців тому

      @mikegill8648 Mike, good news! You can connect a traditional MIDI cable (5 PIN Din) from your Nord (out) to your CP and drive the sounds of the CP with your bigger keys from the Nord. Out of the box, the CP is set to receive MIDI on all channels. You can refer to the CP Manual if you need to isolate the connection to a particular channel.
      Also note that using the USB MIDI out on your CP requires extra equipment in the form of a MIDI Host box. So, I would not use the USB out, but rather, use a 5 PIN MIDI cable type. These MIDI cables are found everywhere and can vary in length as well.
      Another thing to point out is that the MIDI port on your CP is a "shared port," which means it can be used to send or receive MIDI. In your situation, you'll be using it to receive MIDI signals from the Nord, but you shouldn't have to do anything fancy for that to work out of the box. Good luck! 🎹

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 роки тому

      Hello. If I'm understanding you correclty here, it sounds like you want to "layer" the two keyboards so that both are heard for one sound. Have a look at my Nord Stage 3 Extern video to see if this will do the trick: ua-cam.com/video/YyfWnqmsshM/v-deo.html. If this is not what you had in mind, come back here and ask your question again in a different way if you can. The idea behind the Extern option is for you to be able to play an external keyboard and have it sound (or not) with a click of a single button. Provided both keyboards have audio outs to a mixing board or PA, both can be layered (and heard) from the Stage 3. Technically speaking using this same feature, you could turn off the Nord Stage 3 engines while still hearing the Montage only. This means your Stage 3 acts as a bit of a controller keyboard and that's how a lot of people use it. Although, it's not as powerful as a true keyboard controller, it does have the basics and that may be all you need.

    Running through a somewhat similar yet alternative case here. Just got myself a Y midi cable with the intention to allow my Nord Stage 3 to receive 2 midi inputs from both a Korg D1 (used as a weighted controller keyboard) and a Boss RC 505 mk2 (so that its rythms’ and NS3 arps’ tempos stay in sync). However, that doesn’t seem to work when both sending devices are plugged in… only if I disconnect one :-(
    Setup: the single Y end goes into the Nord Stage 3 MIDI IN, while its 2 other ends are respectively plugged with the other keyboard’s and the looper’s MIDI OUTs.
    Any idea on if there’s a way to make this work with the Y cable (e.g. by adjusting some settings on the NS3?), or if a MIDI Merger Box is the only effective solution for this use case?

    Excellent videos Marc! Suppose that you then connect your nord stage 3 to a Mac via usb cable and you want to record midi on Garage Band BY PLAYING KORG MINILOG (or keyboard 2) Did you try this? In my case, I was able to hear the midi only if I play nord stage 3 keys, but not able to hear it if I play the other keyboard. TLDR: I couldn't trigger midi output from nord to garage band by triggering "keyboard 1" (or keyboard 2).
    further explanation: I connected my yamaha p-95 to nord stage 2 (with midi cable), by doing this, I am able to play my 88key yamaha WITH a sound of Bosendorfer grand piano of nord :) Then I thought what if I connect the nord to computer and open garage band, will I be able to record nord audio on one channel and nord midi on a seperate channel (but only PLAYING the yamaha keys, without touching nord) Btw yes I use very similar focusrite and plug both the audio jacks AND the usb midi cable between nord-focusrite
    thanks!

    Hi Mark. I have a question. In a multiple live keyboard rig (lets say the Nord Stage 3, Prophet 6, moog subsequent and a Yamaha Montage) is it possible when I change program on the Stage 3 to also trigger programs change on all the others (I dont want to play any of them from the Stage 3, I only want the Stage 3 to control the rig).

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 роки тому

      Hello @Simon Madsen Music I think the answer here is mostly no with a little yes mixed in. The Nord Stage 3 does have the ability to change the programs on up to two external keyboards BUT each external keyboard has to be on a separate MIDI channel. You get one option with Panel A and the other option with Panel B and the program has to be saved with the Extern option set to on. In addition, you have to set the Stage 3 to change the external programs upon loading. So, there is no option for a third keyboard in this situation. If you can live within those parameters, it does work.
      Another solution would switch all 4 keyboards using yet another piece of gear like a computer running Main Stage perhaps or an iPad with MIDI controller software connected to a MIDI thru box etc. In the old days (I'm going way back to like 1987 here), I used a rack-mounted MIDI switcher. With the push of a single button, all 4 keyboards would navigate to their correct programs/patches. Not sure if such a thing exists today but I have to assume it does. Yet, in my short research for something like that, I came up empty-handed.
      Hope that helps clarify things...

      @@MyKeysToMusic Hi again Mark. But is it possible to change program on 1 extra keyboard on load of the program, but not actually play it from the nord stage keys, but only from the external keyboard(just using the nord as program changer for the external keyboard)I have found no way to actually do this. Because if the extern sectcion is not on on the Nord , it would not trigger any program change on the second keyboard. And on the other hand, if extern section is switched on then the nord keys would trigger external keyboard as well as its own sound. and I have not found any solution for this problem.It would just be very nice on some patches to be able to play each keyboard at the same time but as a standalone and not just by a split/layer compromise on the Nord.

      @@theclaverman Ah ha! You have just officially graduated to the next level of depth on this feature and one that many don't ever get to. What you want is very possible but not necessarily obvious. You start by turning on the Extern section and do all your programing so that you have your "on load" MIDI program changes ready to go. Then you simply do this. Hold the shift key and push on the Extern Zone button (the main button). Get it so that NO lights appear under the zone. You'll notice that the extern section is still ON even though no zones are selected! This was pure magic when I first discovered it.
      Pro Tip: You can double click the zone button to go between selected zones choices or no zones. Keep an eye on the red lights under the "value" knob. That's how you know if the Extern section is on or off.
      In summary, when you play with the Extern option on, you don't necessarily have to control the other keyboard when you play your Nord keyboard. You can have it on for all things except you playing the actual Nord keys. This is especially good if you just want the program of the external keyboard to change but you don't want to play it from the Nord which is the case here. Finally, don't forget to save your program with the zones off and the extern on.

      Hi Shergo. Not sure what you mean exactly by external piano? The Nord 5d can connect to other keyboards using the traditional MIDI 5 pin Din cable and it can connect to a USB host (typically a computer) by way of the USB cable too. What kind of MIDI connections are available to you right now on the external piano?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  4 роки тому

      @@shergomekkawi6402 Ah yes. This is a common request. Simply connect the external Piano to the Nord by way of the 5 PIN MIDI DIN cable. You'll be able to drive the sound of the Nord directly from your piano. Now, if you want to "hear" both the piano and the Nord Electro at the same time, then you're going to need a mixing board or an audio interface that allows you to connect up to 2 keyboards. They sell small mixing boards for this that are very affordable. You can also consider getting an audio interface that is more expensive in general but then gives you the added benefit of connecting to other things such as a computer. Although, some mixing boards have a USB out too and can act as an audio interface as well. So, have a look around but the bottom line is, if your controller keyboard has the 5 Pin MIDI DIN jack , it's a simple matter of directly connecting it to the Nord. Make sure both keyboards are on the same MIDI channel too. Connect headphones to the Nord and play your External keyboard - it should work great.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Рік тому

      Hello Bart. Does your classical organ support MIDI? If so, does it also support each manual on its own MIDI channel? I assume too that you are trying to control the Stage 3 by playing your organ? If that's the case, that would either be 1 or 2 MIDI channels but not 3. It would help if you identified the exact model of your Organ and hopefully, there is a manual online for it. This can help identify what it can and can't do.

      @@BartPlattau I took a quick look at the online manual for the organ. Seems to be a pretty robust MIDI offering (much more than ever thought a traditional organ would have to be honest). So it sounds like you'd have the single cable coming out of the Organ from MIDI Mod and having that go into the Nord. If you could assign each manual with a channel (let's say channel 1 and channel 2), then you could control Panel A and Panel B on the Stage 3 directly from the organ. That would be perhaps one of the best ways to incorporate this. Another option you have is to explore the "Dual Keyboard" option the Stage 3 offers. Hello. You'll push the shift button while pushing the "MIDI" button (written in light gray text). That will get you into the MIDI settings for the Electro 3. You'll find this button right in the middle of the front panel below the main display in the "Program" section. Essentially, it's the same button more prominently labeled: 'Prog B". (There are oftentimes labels at the top and bottom of the buttons on a Nord keyboard so that a single button can serve two functions. Holding the shift button gets you to the item/function indicated by the label that reads below a given button).
