    I’m sure someone will find this fascinating…….sadly on this occasion I didn’t. Tech talk in general just doesn’t float my boat. Appreciate it does for others. Horses for courses and all that. Thank you Mark/Toby anyway for taking the time & effort to give it a look see.

    It would have been nice to compare a Garmin XT against the BMW Connected app. Also: navigation units can come up with different routes to the same destination even when using the same routing parameters because of differences in the routing algorithm and/or the map database i.e. the database describing the road and street characteristics. So route differences when comparing different nav devices are to be expected although they are using the same satellites to determine the bike’s position. Different position accuracy can also play a role.

      Those are also my two options.
      Around here, the Connected app is much better at finding the real "winding roads" than the XT.

    • @jschoofs
      @jschoofs 2 роки тому +1

      @@fredensminde Same for me. The XT screen resolution/brightness and battery capacity are great but apart from that it’s the same old and tired Garmin software/algorithms wrapped in a new user interface. The touchscreen interface is frustrating to use (the buttons are too small to reliably use them when wearing proper motorcycle gloves) and the search functionality is not very intuitive to use. So overall it’s a disappointing device as soon as you try to use a bit more than the very basic A to B routing. As you say the Garmin adventurous routing algorithm is disappointing and, as you, I have had much better route suggestions from the BMW Connected app. What is currently still missing in the app is the ability to include “announced” waypoints in routes created in Basecamp. Once it has that my XT will be collecting dust fast.

    Sat Navs...You got to love their quirks.

    The problem with these navigation apps: the phone rings and you lose the nav, so unless you’ve got touchscreen gloves, you have to take a glove off to switch back to the nav app. Total show stopper.

    I'm guessing you were letting both systems choose a route, rather than follow a planned route you had set?

    • @markholroyd5365

      That’s correct but they both started off exactly the same both for mileage and time… then they differed.. ride safe

    I have calimoto and found it's UK mapping to be abysmal on curvy roads nothing below high numbered B roads is shown or used. In the Yorkshire dales you can't even instruct it to go down some roads it's progress to the village and turns around even though the tarred road continues. Yet a dowmloaded gpx of ACT pyrenees loads perfectly. Perhaps they didn't want to pay for our quality cartography!

    Is the nav 6 the same as the Zumo XT? My experience with Calimoto is its slow to update and gets confused when you miss turnings, however the online planner is quite good for planning routes which I load into my XT.

      The XT is much better than the Nav6 imo. Ride safe

    Clear as mud then! 🤣
    People moan like mad about the Nav 6 but personally have never had an issue with mine..... Apart from the the ridiculous price obviously. Seriously considering the xt though, half the price and much better apparently, the downside is you have to buy separate kit to put it on the GSA.

      Very true, although a company called 3DAM make a super adapter for the XT to go on the BMW mount. It also comes with all the wires and mounts you need.

    • @matttownsend1652
      @matttownsend1652 2 роки тому +1

      @@RiderCamTV Really? I'll look into that, thanks.

    • @jschoofs
      @jschoofs 2 роки тому

      @@matttownsend1652 I use the 3DAM adapter in combination with the Zumo XT on my GS and I am pretty happy with it. However, be aware there is no integration with the BMW Multicontroller i.e. Wizz wheel: zooming in and out has to be done using the XTs touchscreen - not very practical (the buttons are too small) and even dangerous while riding.
      I initially made the mistake of buying the massively overpriced, old and slow Nav VI but I got rid of it as fast as possible. The Internet forums are full of people reporting major and recurring problems with the Nav VIs touchscreen and I have seen this problem on several Nav VIs myself. The touchscreen seems to be very sensitive to dust, dirt and water infiltration - not ideal for a motorcycle GPS.

      @matttownsend1652 2 роки тому

      @@jschoofs Hi, yes I've read all the reports. You can take the GPS mount off the GS completely and buy a bracket for the Zouma xt to fit to the remaining bar, then buy the official bmw connector to replace the one you have taken off and that reverts it into the original wiring so you can use whiz wheel on the zoumo. Checkout 'Billy's bike adventure' he fits one.

    • @jschoofs
      @jschoofs 2 роки тому

      @@matttownsend1652 As far as I know, the Garmin XT does not support the whiz wheel since the Garmin XT does not have any firmware for this functionality. This is also one of the main differences between the stock Garmin devices and the BMW-branded Navigators: integration of the whiz wheel and access to vehicle data.
      I have looked at the Touratech mount but found it pretty expensive and over-engineered and I do not like to hack into the electric system of my bike. I’m currently experimenting with the BMW Connected app in combination with the BMW Connected cradle. This solution does support the whiz wheel in a very good fashion but I am still missing support for Basecamp style waypoints in the app. I like to prepare routes in Basecamp and use waypoints to flag interesting stops on the planned route. The cradle is rather expensive (the BMW tax) even if it supports both wireless and wired charging of your smartphone but so far it does work pretty well. The app is still evolving and new versions often include new functionality.

    Some of the problems I'm having with this review is you are comparing an app to a dedicated system and the satnav will always win as phones are not satnavs they can just use an app. I bet if you could put the Garmin software on a phone it wouldn't be as good as on the nav6.

    • @RiderCamTV
      @RiderCamTV  2 роки тому +3

      Get your point but that was the point really as many people want an app on their phone and it was a way to show some of the differences
