I don't know if this was available knowledge at the time, but broadhead arrows are definitely well understood.
Adam was right about bleeding out, but not just for faster death, but for an easier trail to follow.
The triangular shape of the head also makes it walk deeper into the tissue causing extra damage as the animal runs
Lastly, hunting is a long, hard experience. Even if the difference was as small as Jamie thought, a single arrow fired could be the culmination of days of work - you need that one shot to be as much in your favor as possible.

Also, the arrowhead is re-usable if the stick gets damaged (by, for example, getting broken off when the animal runs away). Once the animal is dead, you can dig out the arrowhead and use it again on a new stick. That would cut the work-time to nearly none. And, if you were traveling to a different location, you wouldn't necessarily have to carry all your arrows. You could, though, carry a lot of arrowheads in a small pouch.

The arrow head would also help keep the arrow inside of the animal, while the wooden one would be much more likely to fall out

What they could hardly test is the fact that the arrowhead stuck in a moving animal will grind out a pretty big hole over time. That will make it bleed more.

There is good reason hunting is allowed only with proper cutting hunting tips. "Pointy stick" would only stuck into prey blocking wound and take days to weeks to kill it, when with cutting tip example deer bleed out under minute.

@@reaganharder1480 Yes, but many times you will be able to recover it. If not, then that hunting method wouldn't have been useful in the first place.
Besides, I assume there are some animals whose hides are too hard for wooden-tipped arrows to begin with, that stone-tipped arrows may be able to penetrate. Though I don't think those are animals humans would want to hunt in the first place, I'd imagine it's better to have arrows that can hurt them in case you need to protect yourself from said animals.

You'd be surprised how hard it can be to cut through a tree depending on what type of wood it is - hardwoods do take longer to cut through, and you don't want to force it in case it disrupts the course of the chain.
Also, pro tip - never use a chainsaw on a palm tree. Not unless you like cleaning out the chain and the guide for an hour or so afterwards...

They've made an error in their thinking about arrow heads. They're looking the time it takes to chip out and arrow head and comparing that to sharpening a stick and concluding it takes many times longer, but that's not how an arrow is made. Suitable sticks have to be found, fletching needs to b gathered, the sticks need straightening over a fire, glue needs to be made, the fletching needs to be fixed on and then the arrow head goes on. The time taken for that final step that produces the best arrow is only part of the process. Without the arrow head nearly all the rest of the time is needed and the end result is less effective.

This was by far one of the episodes I had most issues with when it was aired. The arrowheads were made for because they served an important function and it is highly unlikely that a stone age man made arrowheads for decoration.
We find many preserved arrows made of wood here in Norway now that have been preserved in a glacier for hundreds to thousands of years including arrowheads made of a variety of different materials, including as bone, shell, mussel, bronze, iron, etc. This is found in Jotunheimen, a mountain area named after the home of the jotnene, the giants in Norse mythology.
The glaciers melts fast now and uncover a lot that has been lost in the snow and has been preserved in the ice.
I have searched and tried to find out if they have found an arrow without an arrowhead or a splinter for where the arrowhead was attached, but so far I have not found any. They used arrowheads of hard material all the time. If you want to watch the archeologists uncover old Norwegian arrows and other stuff you can go to the channel of the archaeologists who works there called: "Secrets Of The Ice".

Biggest complaint about the arrowhead stuff was the the fact that they didn't have someone who is experienced at flint knapping for the time trial. Yes flint arrowheads are harder to make but for an experienced "professional" it wouldn't be as much of a time difference.
Also ancient hunter gatherers had less stuff filling up their time so investing time for a small improvement in hunting ability was probably worthwhile for them.

@@skilletborne Amusingly, I happen to be a medieval historian _and_ into medieval-style archery, and trust me, in my experience, half of my medieval archery colleagues (including a couple who also happen to be hunters) have no bloody idea of that difference.😀 There are too many memes in the world of medieval archery aout the relative performance of those types of arrow heads. From people having weird ideas (in _both_ directions of error) about a broadhead's capability or lack thereof to penetrate armor (not just metal armor, irrelevant here, but also including heavy leather, including that of thick-skinned animals), to people thinking a bodkin would be "useless" to fire at an unarmored animal (spoiler: if it can kill a man-sized mammal behind armor, it can also do so even better when there is NO armor). And yes, all those are things I've heard other archers say.

      @tonkey2005 3 місяці тому +1

@@jleal666 well they do follow the scientific method, at least in a rough sense and made for tv,
they hypothesise there is an advantage to the arrow tips (the "myth"),
they then research the proper way to make these arrows,
then they make experiments (shoot arrows with and without and measure penetration depth and accuracy, btw they rarely show all data points),
they analyze the data (stating minimal better penetration and no clear accuracy advantage with tips)
at the end they report the results and conclusion, saying its unclear wether stone arrow tops were common since wood arrows dont survive as long, as well as stating stone arrows likely better at wounding animals leading to a quicker death and higher chance of successful hunt
The show never had the purpose to go in depth about the physics behind the results. Btw the weight of the arrow tip is likely negligable compared to the force applied by the bow as well as penetration due to sharper edges of the stone. So there wasnt really a need to explain specific physics as the results depend on many factors.
And on many occasions they quickly mention and explain in a kid friendly way laws of physics, especially if they can be used to explain surprising results or seemingly dont apply to specific things, in which case they also explain why that law isnt applicable in that scenario, like for example newtons laws during the can u blow wind into sails from ur own boat. Real science is pretty boring for the most part and not great for tv and the show did a great job at getting kids to question the world around them and gave a glimpse at how to do scientific experiments. but it never acted as if they were a physics/ science show that goes in depth.

I like many episodes of myth busters, however the mentality behind many myths are disgusting. Why the have to show blowing up things, or torture methods and unnatural behaviours?

      a) because blowing things up is fun?
      b) because what you believe to be unnatural behaviours often are not so unnatural.
I don't quite remember them testing torture methods but in one episode, and after that they decided not to do it anymore.
