    I have seen the results of "bottling", (as the locals call it); a perfectly decent looking 19 year old attacked with a beer bottle and bearing the terrible scars half a century later. Glass is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable substances. Try experimenting on the results when a 7ft x 8ft pane of 12mm thick shop glass , twisted and shattered among the four men carrying it. I did the first aid and have steered clear of glass ever since.
    Just watching the sugar glass (and the danger of bits in eyes) made me shudder. To me, hitting someone with a fake bottle can have entirely the wrong impression on some minds - "if the actor wasn't hurt, then guy I'm going to hit with this beer bottle won't be". The blow continues after the bottle breaks and the remainder of the bottle claws down the face of the victim in the case of the 19 year old all those years ago, removing the tip of his nose channels of skin and his lower lip.

    • @Tjescoo
      @Tjescoo Місяць тому

      Oh well, glass is awesome! Durable, easy to recycle. The pros definitely outweigh the 'dangers' of using it, as most people are not severely injured by it. The guy from your story might as well have been hit by another object to scar him and if you work with certain materials, the chance to be damaged by them increases significantly. I bet chefs have cut themselves much more often than your average homeowner who makes their own dinner.

    • @Tuberesu

    In the UK, rather than bottles, smooth pint glasses were used and generally pushed in peoples faces, hence the term - "they were glassed" and the results could be life changing, as the glass would often smash or be smashed before the thrust and then main impact. Pretty brutal. It tended to be ladies that did it - blokes just fought - fists feet, knees, foreheads, elbows, chair legs etc. always made Family Sunday Lunch interesting, and that was before we went to the pub.

      The end results where kind of what i expected. My only thought was that maybe the rapid change of pressure in the bottle would shatter the glass at a lower threshold, kind of like how you can blow out the bottom of a bottle that has some liquid in it by hitting the top of it with your palm.

    • @ignispurgatorius5297
      @ignispurgatorius5297 28 днів тому

      Well, alot of their "myths" could have been answered by simply consulting E=1/2*M*v^2. That has always been kinda the case. Obviously often it was done for the show aspect, but sometimes it was just silly, like when they tried to compare the energy of a stone hitting someone vs. the energy of a bullet and Adam build a rig that converted kinetic energy into potential energy and they determined the result by the angle of the target pendulum. Just giving us the mass of the projectiles and their speeds would have been enough and not at all less intuitive than "look it has 8° more!".

    i think the swedish design having more velocity despite having the plug blown out is because they used different powder than the parrot gun, it even produced more smoke so my guess is that they used finer and more volatile powder

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 28 днів тому +2

      No, the powder was the same, it only looks like more cause the breach blew out which pushed a lot of powder out which otherwise would have stayed in. Black powder is not like modern smokeless powder, quite a bit of black powder remains in the cannon and has to be cleaned out every few shots.
      Also the plug blowing out didn't generate more or less speed, it prevented the cannon from recoiling which is obvious when you remember the leather cannon is several times lighter than the parrot rifle which meant an equal shot would have pushed it back further.
      I think the real reason was that the parrot rifle was a rifle. Rifling reduces speed cause it needs to expend energy to induce spin which is also why a lot of modern artillery that has satellite guidance or has self-stabilizing ammunition no longer has rifling. The Parrot rifle was an advancement because it was one of the very first effective rifled field artillery.
      Also they packed that black powder by hand so every shot is different since the amount of powder and how much it is compressed is never completely identical.

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 28 днів тому

      The leather cannon though was ultimately a failure cause the fabric and leather didn't conduct heat very well causing the inside to heat up quickly to the point it would detonate black powder instantly. It's hybrid design also meant you couldn't really cool it down from the outside. A cast iron cannon usually has enough mass and conducts heat efficiently enough that overheating isn't really a problem but with a leather cannon they quickly found out they had to pause for quite a while to let it cool down after firing off several shots.
      It also had other drawbacks like the light weight causing excessive recoil and it not being easy to keep clean which meant it was too much of a hassle.

    The leather cannon would have been confirmed if they had any idea how to make one so that it wouldn't fall apart. Rolling leather around a tube is not how these were made. But it was the easiest way for them so that they could finish the job. It's something Mythbusters usually did when a myth required too much work and craftsmanship that they didn't possess.

So, while one could say they never should have done it there, correctly mind you, but tit was far from expected. Especially as they did it at what was suposed to be a safe place. And yes, that was the worst day of their life. They got very lucky that no-one got hurt. In fact, one could say they got really lucky every time they fired a cannon at that place.

    Hearing them say so many times that the mass of the liquid was a significant factor, I thought they would compare a full normal bottle, and a bigger empty bottle of the same mass... clearly mass is a factor, in my opinion the myth is about how energy dissipates when it comes from an empty bottle

How about using the best of the best "World" Helmets Like the ones used in WRC, Touring cars, F1 and Motorcycle Helmets (but not Nascar as that is also an American only thing that the entire world cares nothing for) So we are talking, Stilo and Arai mostly, but other high end Helmets as well. but maybe you can bust the myth that a Cheap Helmet is Better than an Expensive helmet provided that it fits you correctly, and the expensive helmet will do you no good at all if it doesn't suit your head shape!
    I want to know if the decent helmets are better at absorbing impact than that play helmet you had, and if someone throws a bottle at me while riding my Motorbike at 100km/h, will I get a concussion? or just a big enough fright that I might crash and get more than just a concussion???
