iMac users beware! Bought this monitor this week as a dual iMac Pro and PC monitor, and discovered to my dismay that the Dell Display Manager KVM software does not support iMacs! While the iMac connectivity works fine via the thunderbolt cable, I wanted to be able to use keyboard shortcuts instead of the rear buttons to switch between computers, but Dell's KVM software refused to install on an iMac. After pounding the desk for awhile, I found-in teeny print at the end of the Display Manager manual-that oops iMacs are not officially supported! Hi mate! Thanks for the review! I've had this monitor for about a month now and overall, I love it. However, I’m encountering an issue where videos, especially in full-screen mode, seem choppy, as if they’re playing at 25fps or lower. I film all my videos at 60fps for my channel, and while I don’t have this issue on other screens, it’s quite noticeable here. The same thing happens when playing videos on UA-cam or VLC. Very odd! And no, nothing like that so far. What are you running the screen at for resolution and refresh rate? And have you tried swapping to a different video source? (HDMI / DP etc)
At 11:14 you say that you are able to reach full native resolution at 120 Hz on a MacBook Pro M1 Pro. Is that actually correct? I red on reddit multiple times that this would not work and you would need at least an M2 MacBook to reach the 120 Hz. Could you check this as this hold me back until now.
@@nikolajpetrov8262 I purchased this monitor and can confirm only 60hz with my M1 Max. In addition, thunderbolt stopped working after a day. (Seems to be a common issue). Opened a support case with dell and awaiting my replacement. Currently running HDMI on my Mac at 30hz. Very disappointing. Hopefully the replacement works. Some “fix” the issue by using an official Apple thunderbolt 4 cable (an $80 expense)
I bought this monitor because I saw Pete saying that MacBook m1 can work with this monitor at 120hz. I checked few cables but it does not work at 120hz. I am going to check Cable Matters usb-c to hdmi 2.1 adapter and if this way will not work then statement from this video is not true.
Not working for me on a MacBook Air M3. Big disappointment! Even the native resolution is unusable due to the lack of scaling. Everything becomes to tiny to read.
I think Pete is wrong. Search "macbook pro 14 m1 specs" then first result go to "Display Support" section. First result from Apple, you will notice that it does support max 6K@60Hz. Then same search for "macbook pro 14 m2 specs". You will notice that it does support 8K@60Hz and 4K@240Hz. So, the bandwidth of the M2 Pro does include 6K@120Hz. Why? Because the stream of 8K@60Hz = 6K@120Hz = 4K@240Hz and it is higher than this Dell monitor which is exactly 4.62K@120Hz (5K is the marketing name). For memory, when you double the K, you double the width and the height. So, the area, the pixel quantity is squared (quadrupled) from 4K to 8K but doubled from 4K to 6K (6K has the same height as 4K, but double width) *So 120Hz is OK for M2 Pro/Max and not for M1 Pro/Max.*
At the old price of $1200-1500, this monitor was a steal, I wish I knew about it several months ago. At $2000, this is a much tougher sell. It's basically everything I want in a monitor sans OLED. I'm currently running a 42" LG C4, because I couldn't find anything better for the money.
Great review! I’m definitely checking this screen out! But what I’m even more interested in are those fancy wooden panels you’ve got behind your desk. Where can I by those?
Hi! Do you confirm that M1 Pro can run full resolution at 120hz? I've seen a bunch of subreddit talking about how it's not natively working but you can create and use EDID profile to go near 120hz, thanks for the review, I'm looking at this monitor for a couple of months now, but I'm unsure how well it will play with my 16" M1 Pro!
Same questions from me. I'm running a 14" M1pro and have also seen elsewhere that the M1 does not support that refresh rate unless you do some wizardry with an specific adapter that also requires you FLASH it with a new firmware update. So will appreciate to know if you are getting full resolution and 120hz refresh rate with just a regular cable?
I've been waiting for this video from you. Thank you very much for your work. Very interesting about your decision to stick with your beloved 57" Samsung. After checking this one out,
I know I know, it took a long time! haha. Next time I'll be better :) Yes, it's a tough choice - but I just think the super wide resolution is more useful to me, who likes to have about 50 apps open at once. I have workarounds for the connectivity issue, and the blooming / haloing isn't an issue once it's booted into the OS.
How do you connect your wireless keyboard and mouse to the monitor? Which USB port to use for the wireless receiver? And how to set up in the menu? I have yet to find anyone that explains this on a UA-cam video. I hear how to connect by USB cable but never by wireless. Thanks very much for the video and any help you can provide.
Of course! Yep if you connect the dongle to one of the ports in the back of the monitor, and then check through the menu options to make sure it's connected the USB Ports to your Laptop / PC (choose the input, DP / HDMI etc) and then it should all just work.

Thanks for the review, Pete! Received it recently and thinking about keeping it. I wonder, what scaling option do you use in Mac OS ? The native one appears to be quite usable, and I noticed all other scaling options give a text slight "hallowing", especially visible when white text is displayed on the dark background (probably due lack of font-smoothing on mac os). This Dell also integrates with Mac OS quite well: night shift works, didn't notice any flickering and it wakes up fast. I had been using dual Studio displays, but 27 inch is just way too limiting (+18ms response makes it feel like a 30hz display instead of 60hz). Then sold one of the Studio Displays and bought The Pro Display XDR (I know, "a bit" of an overkill for coding). The XDR is the best monitor I've ever had, but for that price I'd expect it to last a decade and I'm not sure it will. The repair-cost is absolutely eye-watering too if the XDR breaks a few years later. So, now thinking about returning the XDR and selling the remaining Studio Display.
I bought this monitor with a MacBook Air M3, but unfortunately no native resolution and no 120hz. If I would’ve known, I wouldn’t have bought the MacBook. For my Windows laptop (which costs less than half of the MacBook) it works perfectly fine.

Because I really love the sharpening render on a glossy screen panel and I have a friend which own a 27 Samsung display that is really sharp for a matte one. But in my case, every matte display that i owned (AW3821DW, Acer Predator Z35...) didn't have this sharp rendering so I was wondering if this Dell UltraSharp was closer in term of sharpening to a glossy panel ? Is it possible to connect two laptops (MacBook Pro and Dell Latitude) via thunderbolt? Or is it one thunderbolt and then HDMI/DP connection for the other? Would like to be able to have minimal cables with both machines getting powered through thunderbolt if possible.

What is the use case for the ethernet port on a monitor? I think you are saying it is so that you could transfer files between two computers that are both connected to the monitor??
Oh sorry for not clarifying! It just means you can a) get Ethernet to a device that doesn’t have an Ethernet port, like a laptop and b) it’s 2.5Gbps so much faster than normal 1Gb ports. So if you transfer large files to a device (like my NAS that has a 10Gb port) it will transfer much faster

Would it be possible to create a centered FHD or QHD window to run games in or does the entire display need to be used? Gaming is not a priority but it would still be cool to run games at both a reasonable frame rate and PPI
If its an ultrawide monitor I do not see why people would not want it curved, makes no sense to me.
Same, tech reviewer said that image will warp so designer should not get it. Me who is a graphic designer: hmmm wat?
Working in architecture where there are a lot of straight lines. Curved monitors are terrible, they make me question everything.
@@brianwasike1225 ahh ok , well in that case I'm assuming you would just use regular monitors right, and not ultrawides?
@@jaredgillespie3278 its hard to give up the utility of an ultrawide. Where usually a third of the monitor is used for reference material or youtube or Spotify while the other 2 third is the design software currently open. I'm currently using a 34 inch so manageable. A colleague has the 49 inch Samsung and even curved the neck
strain is real.
@@jaredgillespie3278 curved monitors are a dealbreaker for us. Flat Ultrawide monitors are really convinient for us since we have more space to check our work or even multitask throught different programs while we're working, which is such a lifesaver
Be careful with the App Dell Display and Peripheral Manager (DDPM) from Dell for macOS to use it for the settings for Dells. It causes for some machine heavy memory leaks and east up all the memory. Besides that, great display. :) To feed 120hz in 5k you will need a beefy GPU ;) or have to use DLSS/FSR.
I wanted to buy the Samsung S9 49" but then I see this review for the Dell 40". I was ready to click to buy but then I see that there is a £400 difference for the Dell (more expensive). Back to the Samsung?
I'll probably get this, but wish it was Mini-LED to hit HDR1000.
Hi there,
I know that this is a matte panel screen but does someone know if this is more sharp than the usual classic matte panel ? Because I really love the sharpening render on a glossy screen panel and I have a friend which own a 27 Samsung display that is really sharp for a matte one.
But in my case, every matte display that i owned (AW3821DW, Acer Predator Z35...) didn't have this sharp rendering so I was wondering if this Dell UltraSharp was closer in term of sharpening to a glossy panel ? After all, it's called UltraSharp...
nice! in the US the samsung 57 is actually cheaper right now, they are running big sales
Oh wow! Well that’s very handy then!
I'm unable to get 120Hz on my monitor when connected with a Thunderbolt cable to my Microsoft Surface Laptop. Should I switch to using an HDMI or DisplayPort cable ?
Very odd! I’d definitely try something like HDMI first to see if it’s a limitation over Thunderbolt or something. Does your Surface have 2.1?
I find it difficult finding a monitor that I can do productivity and gaming on. Any recommendations? I think at the end here, you said you would recommend something else for both.
If you''re a serious gamer then I'd suggest having one monitor for productivity (like the Dell 40) and go for a separate monitor for gaming. If you're a casual gamer though, the Dell will do just fine on its own :)
Is it possible to connect two laptops (MacBook Pro and Dell Latitude) via thunderbolt? Or is it one thunderbolt and then HDMI/DP connection for the other? Would like to be able to have minimal cables with both machines getting powered through thunderbolt if possible.
If you consider the fact that it has everything a docking station offers built in, and most docking stations are a few hundred dollars, the monitor gets significantly cheaper. Of course you are locked in to that monitor though
I bought this last week and have so far been very impressed, however when using two machines, how do I switch my KVM mouse / keyboard between them easily, please?
Well 1 second / 120 is 8.333milliseconds so it can react faster than it refreshes the picture with 5 and 8 ms.
38 or 40 is the sweetspot in terms of monitor sizes. Everything else particularly 49 is too big.
Hi, it is between this one and the g9 57 inch. I want it mainly for productivity and video editing. I rarley play any games. Thanks.
What desk/shelf size is that?
Will I be able to get 120 hz out of my PS5 if I use an hdmi 2.1 cable?
Hi Do u give away the used monitors? I am starting my career and looking for one. I was hoping you could help.
Would this work with the MacBook m3 max 14inch without any problems? Also which is the best monitor to use with the MacBook m3 max 14 inch alternative to Apple XDR display looking for 32 inch + monitor which will not give me any issue such as scaling etc can anyone recommend me one that’s just perfect also it has to be 32inch + not the 27 inch monitors much appreciated
Since i got my hands on the previous gen of this panel from Lenovo, flat monitors have been ruined for me lol. Sadly this one was out of stock when i needed to replace the Lenovo monitor so had to do a like for like replacement with the Phillips 5k2k. Can't wait to switch up to this one at some point.
Likewise! Curved monitors rock and I can't go back either :)
Now make it oled 1500r 39 inch 5k2k thanks
18:25 it says dell 40" ultragear xD
easy access to ports?? dude i really want to see you hooking up a usb c
The 2 front usb c ports aren't easy access?? 🤷🏼♂️
my fault, i did not seen the docking. sorry
Apple XDR Pro Display
Hello, am I able to use this Monitor for 3D Modeling for Video Games?
I solved the puzzle, Dell 40hz stack on top of the G9. You are welcome.
Different curves will spoil that setup
What does the ethernet port do on a monitor I'm confused
Part of the KVM switch. If you have 2 computers connected, it will switch the ethernet port (and all the USB ports) depending on your input selection.
Ah thanks
This is not a true 5K monitor and Dell shouldn’t market it as such. It has the horizontal resolution of a 5K monitor, with the vertical resolution of a 4K monitor. The Apple Studio monitor is an example of a true 5K screen.
@@csmac3144a well, 5K is not a technical term, it’s a marketing term for anything close to 5000 horizontal pixels, so it is actually fine to call this 5K.
5K is just a marketing term for anything close to 5000 horizontal pixels. It is fine to call this 5K, it is not a technical term with a precise definition.

Another monitor ruined with a disgusting matte finish, that I won’t be buying.
