I always preferred the leader class Bulkhead for it's bigger size and cool (if inaccurate) bonus weapons. And when it comes to figures this old, I consider that level of paint chipping to be pretty much par for the course. Its a 15 year old toy, of course its going to have seen better days.
I've had my Bulkhead since he was released way back when and those side panels that cover the wheels in robot mode have NEVER stayed put, so yeah it would've been nice to have them tab in some how
Just for anyone wondering the difference of a flail and mace, as far as I know. A mace is the spikey thing on the end of a stick, like WFC Megatron has. A flail is when you have that spikey thing on a chain or rope of some sort like Bulkhead and movie 1 Megatron. Took me ages to figure out, hope it’s helpful definition
It took me a couple seconds to realize, I didn’t even know what a flail was before I knew the difference but thanks to the Lego hobbit game I found out quickly both what it is and the differences are
Bulkhead is one of those figures that you have to get the one size class up to display with other toys. I had my Voyager Bulkead with my Activators for the longest time.
One thing I had found out by just messing with the toy, he has a second head swivel. I just noticed it because it was misaligned one day. I got a used Hasbro copy, but in good conditions and everything stays in its place. I really like this figure, because I love Bulkhead.
man i use to have this guy as a kid.I remember loving him so much. All the loose joint here weren't prevalent on my copy(no shit it was brand new). I remember not understanding how his hand gimmicks worked and breaking one in the process...i miss this toy
Because of animateds inconsistent scale in the show it's kinda hard to say what figures are ideal. If scale is important I'd recommend using scout class prowl and bee, deluxe Optimus and ratchet, voyager bulkhead as the main cast. I know that's not really the best when put next to secondary character autobots, but I do think it works well with the most main decepticon figures. Certainly helps the voyager lugnut out.
It may not be perfect and maybe it’s nostalgia because I actually love this thing so much. I wish it didn’t have the weird gimmick in the arm that leaves a black hinge, it just looks like an eyesore. The leader class is a lot better but it is a bit more inaccurate
Ok I'm just dumb, on the short I asked "Who was that teal/aqua recolor of Bulkhead" without thinking it was Bulkhead, because Bulkhead is WAAAAY more green... I am just dumb
All because of ROTF's toyline and Hasbro wanting to own a TV channel (which failed because it couldn't stand against the likes of the already-established Disney Channel and Nickelodeon).
Really neat how closely the transformation of the voyager mirrors that of the Leader class figure. Given there was a choice between the two back in the day I straight up went for the Leader class, as it worked better in scale with other characters, looked better, and had fun light and sounds and bizarre mouth movement. The hands though weren't much better as he only had one with a weak grabbing gimmick, and a spinning saw built into the other. Headmaster was also a fun inclusion which I think gave Bulkhead an alternate voice clip. Really good value for everything packed into it for the time of release.
I have thus bulkhead (the normal hasbro version) and I have no issue with loose joints or standing him up. So i think you just go an old, chipping, QC issue bulky
Animated was my first transformers form of media. I'm gonna buy a figure but I don't know which is cheapest and good quality so I'm looking for suggestions
Man I wish there was a live-action of Bulkhead we never seen one in Transformers movies I think it's time some of the Transformers be added in the movies
I still have mine from like 10 years ago and he still doesnt fall over. He actually stands quite solid. Might be different from toy to toy. Also i always removed the side pieces that go over the wheels, because i just hated how they looked and i still do. AND one Thing that gets a pain in the ass is the turning head plate, because it doesnt stay in place anymore and it just always stays in an unfinished state dragged down by the head
I own the hasbro copy of him sealed for years at pretty much retail. The ratchet on one leg did wear off unfortunately but the tolerance was very good for mine at least
Bulkhead is one of my favorite characters in Transformers Animated, and the fact that he was going to get replaced in the cancelled fourth season pisses me off.
Stinkers?? You forgot one: Swindle, with his clear plastic at major joints. Now that...that guy's a stinker!! On the other hand, it makes a great way to set up a battle damage scene, like have somebody having chopped his arm off. (I did that with different figures: LGEX God Ginrai dashed past and chopped Cool Become Brave Devastator's left arm off)
@@DragoonMS The useless gimmick that activates every time you even try to bend the arm is no issue and the límited leg bend that doesn't even reach 90 cause of how it's sculpted is no issue? And the automorph that got the head stuck on mine BRUH

I have a random TFA Prowl and Lockdown that I got years ago. They're in reasonable condition, though Prowl's hip breaks every time I transform him to either mode. So for now he sits on the shelf, half leaning on my Lego Optimus until I figure out a better solution for him.
I remeber buying the original TFA Bulkhead figure, sure I admit it's not perfect but that doesn't stop me for having Bulkhead as one of my favorite Autobots lol.
Just statically standing there he does look really good. Definitely do see legacy bulkhead in the altmode. I bet if they gave him squat legs then ppl would have liked the legacy better as bulkhead....though I do like the legacy look as a new bulkhead but certainly not prime 😂
I hope you get the Leader version one of these days. I chose that one over this because it doesn't have the arm-rood gap. It's still with me after all these years.
Ok, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who had this thought, but after watching this video, I'm definitely convinced that Legacy Bulkhead was supposed to be based on Animated, but was changed to be based off Prime Bulk because of content starved Prime fans(of which I am one, I will not deny that). That or Legacy Bulkhead is a mash-up of the two. Probably the latter, but who knows?
I never understood why, but for some reason, the alt modes for the animated transformers are extremely visibly pleasing. 90% of them are my preferred versions of their alt modes, like Bulkhead's here and Megatron's Helicopter mode.
I used to have this one bulkhead figure that had the headmaster gimmick and it had lights and sounds and it was massive, I don't know what happened to that figure but I wish I could find it again, last time I seen it was a few years ago and now it's just gone.
I’m not sure if this is correct or not but from my experience and other people’s stories, the takara Animated toys we very prone to having weaker quality plastic which messes with joint tolerances. Apparently this is due to how the plastic is made which helps to keep the metallic paint but also this just has the plastic weaker overall.
Yeah, I do believe the loose joints is cause its used (as mine isn't that bad compared to yours). I do wonder why Takara gave most of the Animated figures metallic plastic/paint. I mean, it looks cool, but not that accurate. Was annoying with Jetpack Bumblebee as they gave the vehicle mode metallic paint, but everything else (besides the head) is just a mustard colour ^^;
Personally, I liked this version’s design way more than the leader class because its more accurate to the show minus the size…. But man those side panels were so crap. it has gotten so loose and mine didn’t have the pins (If it did have pins) so it actually just pops off.
I would have to dig my copy to check, but if my memory's right, he is nowhere this floppy, all the mentioned parts that don't lock have this "soft click" lock, but it seems like your copy got those rendered useless due to too much/rough playing The heels definitely had a soft click thing going on that is most likely due to plastic rubbing on plastic or some loose pin while the side door is sculpted slightly squared off to hold, but on one of yours seems like it ended up being sanded round
Bro got done dirty with this copy yikes dude really has the worst luck when it comes to loose transformer joints and tabs I had the original flat version those side had sorts stiff click and the top wing had slightly more friction in em if you gonna keep him all 4 panel can be removed to add something to help the looseness it as for the wheel feet that’s a rip also enjoying the reviews
