Some legend says that the vulgar names for places come from the times when Finland belong to Russia and the representers of the Tsar roamed around the the Finland to check up on their property. When asked what is the name of the place, Finns came up with the most taunting names just to screw around with the russians. Eventually the names stuck because they were written down on official papers.

      But that/it isn't so.
Those are mostly Very ancient places.
Russia didn't even had "formed" yet.
But first russian city, Novgorod, was "made" once with three "kings".
One of those was actually finnish.
Even -as all know?- Finland didn't even exist then.
      Weird fact.

This is the story I heard why some places are named that funny/gross way: Back in the day the Swedes ruled Finland, and they sent mappers over. Not everyone took kindly to this, and when they were asked the name of the place, they gave silly ass names to the mappers.
    And they stuck.

This was so spot on and yes, we in Finland are almost living as before, with this covid-19, the social distancing comes naturally to some of us at least, but then there are still ppl that take it really hard actually and have problems with coping with it :(

    • @WildwoodVagabond
      @WildwoodVagabond  3 роки тому +3

I think that even though it’s normal for most Finns to keep distance it can be hard on them because we as humans are social creatures and thrive with social interaction. This whole situation has been hard for many people here too. It will be nice when we can get back to normal, but here in the US (according to the news) it’s still not under control. The town name Kolari actually originates from the last name Kolari. There was a man named Pekka Kolari who moved from Savo to Lapland to a place that is now called Kolari in 1587 (mentioned in some old tax book). You should know that in Turku there is a place called 'Palli' and right next to it 'Pallivaha', translated as 'ball' (singular balls) and 'ball wax'.
I've often wondered these place names myself, and I came to the conclusion that when the map names were stamped down, they likely were swedish academics (It took a long time and one Mikael Agricola to change, but for a long time Finnish Academic lingua was Swedish) going around asking people where they were and what was called what.
Humorous Finns living a rough farming or logging or something life, far from the Lords making maps then had some fun.. ;-D
And other thing is different accents, that can be like different languages when spoken, really old Saami-tribe words, etymology..
Oh, and there's a place called "Varkaus" or "Theft" too and many more..

That "maa" thing is not a meme, and it is a sorry attempt to make it one. Almost every word you take from a dictionary has plenty of different meanings. There are plenty of English (or Finnish) words that have dozens of meanings. And what's worse, in some of those cases you need to do real mental gymnastics to claim the word should be translated as "maa," for example area or terrain. You cannot translate world as maa, the planet's name is Maapallo with capital first letter, you could shorten it as Maa. Countryside you would never write as "maa" in Finnish, the word translates as maaseutu, but again you can use an abreviation, and only in inflected forms: maalla, maalle, maalta.
Who ever did that should be ashamed.

That Kimi Räikkönen picture is even funnier as the real video from what actually happened. Namely Nicole Kidman arrived in the F1 paddock, and shook hands with the F1 people there. Her small talk was probably such sweat talk that Kimi watched at the camera with that face. For me it speaks loud and clear: 'This guy just 'needed' to barge in here, right?' Kimi is such an honestly straight forward guy he has little tolerance for the buzz around them unrelated to the real F1 driving. People have been laughing at that so much.

Some Estonian examples (Most are village names):
    1.Tapa (Kill!)
    2. Külaküla (Villagevillage, so if you live there, you live in a village called Villagevillage)
    3. Korjuse (Corpse)
    4. Paganamaa (Pagan land or in context Devil/Demon land)
    5. Põrgu (Hell)
    6.Kanepi (Weed)
    7. Tudulinna (Sleep town)
    8. Soome (Finland, yes it's a village)
    9. Läti (Latvia, again yes it's a village)
    10. Saaremaa (Island land, not the Island Saaremaa, but it's a village near Russian and Latvian border, so it's very inland)

    • @jarskil8862

Partial reason for weird Finnish places is that in 1700s when Swedish mappers were mapping Finnish region, they went in villages and asked from farmers "what is X place called?"
Angry Finns hated Sweden and they came up with random and dirty/rude places. Sadly those mappers were legit and did not question it.
