Salmiakkikossu does taste like candy. It's delicious. I don't get why foreigners say salmiakki tastes salty, I don't feel that. Salmari also is very sweet to me. Delicious. Good video!
Thank you for the kind words! Thats what Joonas was saying the same thing and hand a confused reaction when we didn't like it... I think we just are not used to a drink like that
@@NickandSoph If you mix hydrochloric acid and ammonia, you get salmiakki. Strange how you can mix two toxic substances and the result is nontoxic (I'm not meaning the alchohol version). But don't try this at home!
Yeah, maybe Joonas could have added some history on a few of those. Koskenkorva is a national vodka brand and the Jaloviina is inspired by the "cut brandy/cognac" of war times and after when everything was rationed. It wasn't cut with water but with added vodka (probably from the Koskenkorva factory). So you got some brandy taste from it - and all the alcohol - but it wasn't real brandy.
The history would have absolutely been a nice touch! Thank you for the brief description of Jaloviina because we were having a tough time figuring out why those things were added to one another lol now it makes more sense!
Jaloviina was created in 1932 so it doesn't have anything to do with the war except that during rationing the mixture was basically just vodka with a splash of cognac to give it a nicer color.
I've given Jaloviina to my foreign friends too. American, Norwegian, Dutch, etc. Everyone has liked it. "So smooth!". Jaloviina is legit a tasty liquor.
Being 1/4 Finnish (Russian origin) by my mother's family, can attest it's quite a pleasure to drink although some people just absolutely refuse to drink it simply for how it looks lol
You do shake salmiakki, when you are making some yourself. You just need some Turkish Pepper candy and vodka. Shove them into the bottle and keep shaking for a long time. Before Salmiakki Koskenkorva (aka. "Salmari") was brought to market in 1993, Finns had to buy candy called Tyrkish Peber made by Fazer, put all the candy in a traditional Koskenkorva bottle and put the bottle (with the cap closed, of course) into a dishwasher. If you don't like Salmari, you're probably not going to like Tyrkish Peber candy either. Also, what was the temperature of your drinks? I prefer having Salmari served around 2-4 °C.
I'd say the go to is coca-cola with jaloviina. But you need the 1 star regular jaloviina, it's more cut than 3 star I believe. 3 star is quite fancy special jaloviina. Some people drink it mixed with sour milk, believe it or not. Supposedly pretty tasty.
I wish he had you try 'Lakka' which is a cloudberry liqueur, really good, kinda sweet, and not too strong, 20-25%. I've tried to find it outside of Finland, but had no luck. If you have an Ikea near you, they sometimes have cloudberry jam if you're curious.
You really should have tested the minttu with hot (or cold) chocolate.. Also, I think Jallu was birn during war times when coniac was spares and got diluted with koskenkorva.
