Awesome 🙂 send me a short video link if you want. I have been meaning to do videos where I have helped people. I need to vary my content. You can host a video on drive for example. Would be cool.
Ey up ben, hope you are well? No you're not chuntering on mate you're video's are informative, interesting and devoid of BS! They are interesting enough for someone in the trade such as me and easy to follow/understand for the diy enthusiast in my opinion 😊👍
Great Video ! and perfect timing, too . I'm just changing the Vanos on my B38 engine and this is very helpful for me. Looking forward for the next one ! By the way, do you know the thightening torque values for the vanos valves. ISTA gave me two values (20 and 40 Nm) and I don"t know which one to pick ? Once again, great job !!!
10,30,50nm + 35 deg is the torque for vanos central bolts that hold sprockets to cams if this is what you refer to. Thanks for watching. Making another about hybrids so pls subscribe and hit notifications 🙂
Great video. Really informative. I just did this on my b48.. but bought the wrong locking bracket tool... so I didn't take a chance messing things up. Where's the best place to buy the vanos locking bracket tool?
great video! not too much talking or bullshitting around. just the correct info and technique we need are showed by you. (need to do a (F46) B47 timing chain, engine has to come out from the underside i gues?)
These videos are brilliant Ben! I see the faults on a daily basis and I always advise our customers to replace the Vanos central bolts and Vanos hubs on both camshafts and this video perfectly explains why. Do you mind if I share the link ?
Great videos been watching you for a while on tic tok i am looking at buying a 2022 218i grand coupe do these engines have this problem or is there any thing i should be aware of any help appreciated👍
love this video, My B38 has top end noise, while turning engine by hand to put the cam tool on i hear clicking coming from the exhaust vanos pully, Im hoping its my problem, it will save me alot of time if it is , thanks so much for this video.
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding Thank you for you response ,,,,Next step is to get to the Tensioner i have a 2016 f55 base there is a shield over exhaust that ill have to remove, if you know will i have to remove catalytic converter or the battery box?
Could you explain what is the main cause of this happening please? Usually exhaust camshaft jammed code appears. Ista tells you to check the solenoid pin( free movement), if that's fine, then it tells you to check the screen (filter mesh you showed )why would the mesh be broken? Poor parts ? Does the vanos hub snap because of the mesh breaking up? Would you also recommend a new vanos solenoid after the repair of the vanos hub. Thanks
The vanos actuator bolt IS THE CAUSE. Metal gets into the vanos sprocket, it jams, snaps and the timing remains either over retarded or over advanced. You need to replace both sprockets, both bolts and change the oil and filter.
Is this avoidable with frequent oil changes (~10k km) ? I imagine that if we reduce the risk of metal getting into the vanos then it won't fail. I see that the oil in that vanos unit is very dark, usually oil should be lighter even if used.
No. The component was made poorly. The only fix is to replace the vanos actuator bolts before they fail and fit countermeasured bolts that are more robustly manufactured. Of course regular oil changes every 10k km is never a bad thing but in this case they just made rubbish quality parts.
@@allmech_BMW_fault_finding Thanks, do you think it's possible to change them on a longitudinal B48 ? I guess someone with small hands and a mirror might be able to do it.
New to your channel, much respect to your wisdom on these BMWs. Question for you. On a 2004 530i I come outside sometimes and all my windows are open, no codes, What can it be? Thank you for any assistance with this issue.

It depends on the fault codes. I just had one today with fuel leaking from the fuel temp sensor which caused fuel to go everywhere. Cant say without fault codes but if Vanos is bad usually there will be fault codes. Come back to me with fault codes.
Wonderful tutorial. Especially appreciate the tips around removing the injectors. Still trying to root cause my B46 lugging/hesistation misfires without any codes. Wondering if there is a chance that codes would not be triggered by this failure? Also would be helpful to have a tutorial on how to record those waveforms of the intake and exhaust vanos cycles. Ty!
@istvan.design Tbh I rarely use ISTA. I use Thinktool, Inpa on older cars etc. I dont need Ista to diagnose misfires. I can tell you which cylinder is misfiring without reading trouble codes or looking at live data
@@allmech_BMW_fault_findingi changed both ex and intake vanos solenoids and acuator, and it gives me the code of p13c9 and p0015, i don't know what to do
Hi ben my mini f56 jcw 2018 can be the same problem 🙈in diagnose misfire cylinder 1,3 and other multiple misfire pression in the inlet collector to hight repalce spark coil and reverse vanos actuator but the problem still in progress (scuse my little english)
My b38 engined F54 clubman has the same faultcodes and issue. It is sitting at the dealer now. Bought from them new, had all maintenance. Now 147000 km. Wonder what it will cost. Ridiculous that these go bust at that low mileage.
Hello. Unfortunately, I can't find anyone capable of helping me here in my area. My car is a 2015 BMW, model 116i (gasoline) with a B38 three-cylinder engine, 109 horsepower, with 212,000 KM.The car jerks at low RPM (around 1800/2000 rpm) when the acceleration is steady (e.g., with cruise control). Once it passes those RPMs or if I press the pedal all the way down, it doesn't jerk. The issue appears when the engine is warm, not immediately. Additionally, when left in neutral while stationary, the revs remain high and fluctuate (1400/1300 rpm), again only when the engine is warm. THESE are my errors: 130F11, 130308, 132101. Could be related to VANOS problem you are describing? Or maybe could be related to the camshafts?
Also you might be happy to know the very latest engines are coming with ‘e-vanos’ fully electronic instead of oil controlled, I guess it’s the only fix bmw had for this fault.
I have this B38 engine, how often does this issue occur and how can I prevent it? Is it something to worry about? The more I watch, the more I'm starting to wonder whether I should sell my BMW 2 GC (currently 20,000 km mileage) while it’s still running...
The most important thing to prevent this is to regularly change your oil, especially if you drive short distances. In such a case I would recommend changing the oil every 10000 km just to be sure.
My B37 has a shake at idle. No codes at all. Ive checked the mouts and they all look gooed. Ive done smooth running test and im getting cylinder 1 - 0.52 cylinder 2 + 1.24 cylinder 3 - 0.46. any idea why the shake???
Sounds similar to my issue. How do you confirm leaking injectors with a boroscope? Carbon buildup on pistons? I did pull the plugs and didn't smell any fuel on plugs. I checked the resistance of the Bosch injectors and they were 1700 mOhm when Bosch specs 1500. That said I'm not sure if measuring resistance of coil works for a solenoid-type injector. Thank you
I’ve been seeing this failure in the states now that the cars are getting up in mileage. Particularly on the B48 so far. Now we have E-Vanos which will be interesting when those start to fail. There’s a thin sheet metal with springs to lock/unlock the rockers with an actuator to adjust it and the Vanos solenoids are now 3 phase motors lol way to over complicate it eh
FYI bmw say if it takes more than 13nm (if I recall correctly) to remove the injector with the tool then the injector needs replacing. I’ve snapped the heads of a few with the tool when they’ve been seized. Not fun.
B38 vanos problem and b48 are not the same..in the b38 engines the failure can be also in the camshaft, maybe a faulty vanos lead to a bad lubricantion so the cam is no longer in the same position, it's spins when it get ms hot.. changing only the vanos is not enough in the b38
Even though I wouldn’t do this kind of work it’s still interesting to see and the commentary progresses with the work and doesn’t continually reiterate information already covered, which normally has me reaching for the forward slider. Looking forward to Pt 2. Thank you
