  • This is Dr. Brian Bowman with the West Texas State University (now West Texas A&M) Band Camp Directors Band in 1986, performing the Carnival of Venice on euphonium. This is not the best recording, I was in the audience recording with my tape recorder. Please see my other videos of Dr. Bowman in a clinic from 2005.

it's really nice to find recordings of Dr. Bowman in the 80s--something you don't find everyday! thanks for posting this. really classy playing!

Wow, good memory! As I recall, he had a specially made glove that allowed only one finger to stick out. He came back out after playing the whole piece to do an encore, pulled out the glove, put it on and played the last variation again. Unfortunately, I did not record the one fingered encore.

I've had this guy as my judge for TSSEC twice and he's given me a 3 both times. He's hard to impress. :(
And I plan on going to UNT (where he works) and I guess it's going to be hard to be one of his students if I ever make it. :/

Perhaps all you earned was a 3, those two times? He shouldn’t be any “tougher” than any other judge there, otherwise, it would not be a “fair” competition.

@MrReddoch Please let me know if you ever get that fixed and are able to post it. I would love to actually see that performance.

The VCR tape is broken? Or do you not have a way to play it?
