Like if this is what you get all the time from being a euphonium player: "What instrument is that?" "A euphonium" "Whats that?' "It's like a small tuba.."
OOOH I live for this! Euphonium is given little to no credit. There are countless times when I've been asked what I play because my mouthpiece is on the table and they either guess Trumpet or Tuba and I have to control myself to not choke them. Let's go Euphoniums (or baritones stfu).
oh god. its been 10 years since ive heard the sound of a Euphonium and i never realized how much ive missed playing until now. Sir your performance brought me to tears.

Was just showing my coworker this as an illustration on how the Euphonium is played, as I played it in High School years ago. Mr Childs is insane! A delight to hear him play!
Anyone who gave this a "thumbs down" must be some kind of anti-euphonium zealot...let me guess...trumpet players? Flute players? Timpanists? Kazoo aficionados? You guys always *were* jealous of the single BEST instrument in the band! ;-)
I have been playing the euphonium for about 2 years and my teacher always says when I struggle to play a piece that even David Childs was at the level I am at now at some point and I find that hard to believe.😃
+Aimee Guest It's true! I've been playing euphonium for 20 years, and trumpet for 10 years before that. And while I'll probably never be at the level David Childs is at, I'm still a pretty good player. But when I started out, I didn't sound nearly as good and struggled at times. All it takes is practice.

first of all david childs is my hero......he is the main person that has inspired me to continue playing the euphonium........secondly i definitely don't appreciate the rude comments about the euphonium....its a wonderful yet uncommon instrument because people don't have the balls to play it....i'm the only euph player in the wind symphony at my high school because all the others that played quit because they didnt have what it takes to play the euph
Wooo! Euphonium for the win! I myself am in my third year of playing Euphonium, And I find it extremely enjoyable. I just hate how most people think all instruments are so simple- Like, they think Percussion is just hitting things, and the rest of the instruments are simply blowing into a hole.. They couldn't be more wrong.
BLACKIE16491 The euphonium is the most beautiful voiced of ALL brass instruments. Soft and mellow when needed and strong and authoritative when needed. No other brass instrument is so versatile !
I have had the pleasure of meeting Bowman. David and Brian are right up there with each other now. Being that David is young....I can't imagine him any better than he is now. He still many decades of his career left. David will probably end up being the best EVER.
Abel Aguilar Its kinda funny. We try so hard in school for band and arguably more time and effort than in individual subjects in school yet dont pursue careers in music. This for majority of school students not everyone.

a baritone is a bellfront horn (the ones you usually see on the field i.e a marching band) a euphonium is what david childs plays, its used in concert (sit down music) and also most of the time parade. i am a baritonist/euponist myself and i have played for 5 6 years (almost half my life)its a very beautiful instrument and it will be my majoring instrument. oh right, uh well i hope my answer helped. also, since a euphonium is a concert horn it has a softer sound to it. . .
@dorkadia The bore of the baritone is cylindrical like a trumpet, and the euphonium is conical as in the tuba/horn. The euphonium has a more deeper sound than a baritone, closer to a tuba. While the baritone has a slightly more, for a lack of a better word, pinched sound, closer to a trombone.
I saw a couple awesome college students (I'm sure at least one of them was in college) perform the Carnival of Venice on euphonium and it was so awesome I had to listen to it again.
*Dies in awe* I am currently trying to play and or accomplish playing this piece. Right now with lack of experience I may not be able to play it perfectly as he clearly did, but at least when I can play it the way I want to, I can say I did it and I did it well. Like I say my lack of experience because I am only a 15 year old. I will play this piece, whether I like it or not. It will get done!!! You did oh so amazing at that piece!!!! Growing up I learned Bb Trumpet. It wasn't until much later did I learn about the baritone/euphonium horn. I love the warm sound they produce, and I decided to try one out. The transition was not too hard and I had a great time playing it in a small band. What a great instrument.
@BigD31492 Euphoniums ARE used in orchestras, just not as often. After playing great orchestral suites such as The Planets, which DOES have a euphonium part, the euphonium is used in orchestras. However I must admit horns are also beautiful instruments. I'm an oboist =).

Why do people act so pathetic when arguing about instruments and which is "better?" I am a sophomore in high school and I play every brass instrument, and I practice at least two hours a day, usually three. I am active right now on the trombone, euphonium, and french horn. I can tell you that music isn't about competition, it is about enjoying it, and doing something you love. Real musicians don't argue over an instrument, they enjoy an instrument, and they enjoy music. Just enjoy.
I play Euphonium and played a simplified version of this song for judges when I was just barely 12 years old. I'm 13 now and playing College level pieces and this still blows my mind!

I also played a 51D and I was thinking of moving to a Steven Mead as well. I did so and after a while I decided to try a Denis Wick Heritage 3AL. After I bought the Heritage I learned that many Euphonium players have been switching from Mead mouthpieces to Heritage model Denis Wicks...but it's all a matter of taste. But I will say the Heritage 3 and 4AL's are excellent mouthpieces
The difference between a euphonium and a baritone is that the euphonium has a wider/larger bore than the baritone, and has a warmer, richer tone than the baritone. To clear the confusion about the number of valves, baritones nad euphoniums can both either 3 or 4 valves. The person who plays the baritone next to me has 4 valves, the girly who plays a euphonium next to him has 3 valves, and my euphonium has 4 valves.

Idk how trombones project, seriously it is insanely difficult to get my euphonium to sound remotely as loud as the trumpets or trombones

truly, there is no best euphonium player, they all rock, like Childs, Mead, Tropman,etc. all of them are amazing.
