    Story of my life!
"You're in band? What do you play?"
    -"Euphonium"
    "What is that?"
    -"Looks like a tiny tuba"
"....Still don't know what you're taking about."

Like if this is what you get all the time from being a euphonium player:
    "What instrument is that?"
    "A euphonium"
    "Whats that?'
    "It's like a small tuba.."

a baritone is a bellfront horn (the ones you usually see on the field i.e a marching band) a euphonium is what david childs plays, its used in concert (sit down music) and also most of the time parade. i am a baritonist/euponist myself and i have played for 5 6 years (almost half my life)its a very beautiful instrument and it will be my majoring instrument. oh right, uh well i hope my answer helped. also, since a euphonium is a concert horn it has a softer sound to it. . .

@dorkadia The bore of the baritone is cylindrical like a trumpet, and the euphonium is conical as in the tuba/horn. The euphonium has a more deeper sound than a baritone, closer to a tuba. While the baritone has a slightly more, for a lack of a better word, pinched sound, closer to a trombone.

@BigD31492 Euphoniums ARE used in orchestras, just not as often. After playing great orchestral suites such as The Planets, which DOES have a euphonium part, the euphonium is used in orchestras. However I must admit horns are also beautiful instruments. I'm an oboist =).

There were parts I actually laughed while listening to this. He just brings such lightness and whimsy to it. What a talent.

Why do people act so pathetic when arguing about instruments and which is "better?" I am a sophomore in high school and I play every brass instrument, and I practice at least two hours a day, usually three. I am active right now on the trombone, euphonium, and french horn. I can tell you that music isn't about competition, it is about enjoying it, and doing something you love. Real musicians don't argue over an instrument, they enjoy an instrument, and they enjoy music. Just enjoy.

I play Euphonium and played a simplified version of this song for judges when I was just barely 12 years old. I'm 13 now and playing College level pieces and this still blows my mind!

I also played a 51D and I was thinking of moving to a Steven Mead as well. I did so and after a while I decided to try a Denis Wick Heritage 3AL. After I bought the Heritage I learned that many Euphonium players have been switching from Mead mouthpieces to Heritage model Denis Wicks...but it's all a matter of taste. But I will say the Heritage 3 and 4AL's are excellent mouthpieces

I play euphonium, and whenever I don't feel like practicing, all I have to do is listen to David Childs play. I wish I could play like that!

The difference between a euphonium and a baritone is that the euphonium has a wider/larger bore than the baritone, and has a warmer, richer tone than the baritone. To clear the confusion about the number of valves, baritones nad euphoniums can both either 3 or 4 valves. The person who plays the baritone next to me has 4 valves, the girly who plays a euphonium next to him has 3 valves, and my euphonium has 4 valves.

  • @WSUFan2017

@dorkadia Yeah, a euphonium and a baritone horn are two different things. David is playing a euphonium in this video. If you are saying how you want his baritone (he does own a baritone), that has nothing to do with this video.

@kupo150 The euphonium is the most beautiful brass instrument, and is a major part of brass and concert bands

I use it like that too, and also depending on what type of movements there are in the music I use different ones too.
