- Aliens often resemble life on Earth. How did we land on that concept of extraterrestrials?

No one really knows what aliens look like, but we all have similar ideas about them. It’s often a creature with a big head, long arms and legs, and big buggy eyes. We see these common images of aliens depicted in movies, books, and on TV shows-which are made by us.
Science fiction stories often explore the relationship between humans and aliens. So we often find extraterrestrial creatures entangled with relatable human features. In this video, we talk to Oscar-nominated VFX supervisor Charley Henley, and the director of SETI Research Center at UC Berkely, Andrew Siemion. They both give us their views on how we, humans, perceive aliens and how that shapes our imagination of life beyond our planet.

I know I'm just some random person from the Internet but I saw one once when I was 11. I was playing ball with my brother and the neighbor came over to point out the UFO which was hiding in a condensation cloud left by an airplane. Why did we think it was an alien rather than anything else? Well, it was at a pretty close distance, 11 of my family and neighbors could not think of anything else, it was moving in a way that only helicopters could, it clearly did not have any shoppers, it was shaped as a gray disc with no visible wings, and it was within a kilometer distance from the Miami International Airport where only airplanes where allowed to fly (so it must have stayed undetected by all radars.)
And yes, we took pictures of it but the images were as bad as the current ones when it comes taking pictures of a full moon.

We cant really imagine things we’ve never seen before, all we know and imagine is related to something we’ve seen before, it is like telling someone to come up with a color they’ve never seen, so unless we see real aliens all the aliens we design or create will have animal or human like characteristics cause that is all we know
I think they have a similar form of a human because it's practical for creating and precision, but aliens could take the outer form of reptiles or fish.
Captain Totes you cant know that, you say that cause that is what you know, that is what youve seen, we have no idea under what conditions this extraterrestrial life forms have been formed so youll never know until you see one

If we discover aliens before they discover us they'll probably be some kind of plant/ vegetation
In that they are probably producers and not consumers, and will likely harvest solar, geothermal, tidal, or radioactive energy, yes. Beyond that, we have no real conception of what they look like and function like beyond the laws of physics. That is, assuming we find them, and they don't visit us. It may be reasonable to assume that producer-like organisms have no need to evolve intelligence because their basic survival relies on standing still in one place for a long period of time and not getting eaten. Thus, it would be unlikely for a plantlike organism to develop space travel.
However, this assumes that their life works the same way ours does. Earth life harvests solar energy and stores it in organic chemistry. But there are other kinds of energy, and other kinds of chemistry. You could have life that harvests tidal energy and stores it using potential energy, like an organic buoy that lifts sacks of water above itself to store power, and drains that water when it needs energy. You could have life that harvests heat energy and stores it as pressure, like an organic steam engine. You could have life that is powered entirely by convection currents of a tectonically active planet and it would move extremely slowly (read: geologically). There's really no way to know, when you get right down to it.

This is the most understanding & interesting view point of aliens. Not many people seem to think like this, & it kind of bothers me, Lol.

They've already discovered us...
Pretty much the only thing we can assume with some degree of accuracy is that any technologically advanced civilization would have some way to manipulate the environment with their body. Grip, twist, etc. And that they would have to have a community driven mentality because only by many individuals(not necessarily including individuality) working together they can create something much larger than themselves.
That's our strength and reason for surviving this far.
Math is also a safe assumption.
Beyond that... *shrugs*
Tentacles or hands at minimum...And probably Eyes of some kind...Sight would be probably the most important sense to have for any creature that wants to create civilization
Its fun isn't it? Talking about all these. A intellectual life form will definately have to comprehend mathematics and physics to a deep level. In terms of physical traits. Why have them if u can manipulate other organisms to make them?
Remember we're talking about intelligent lifeform. It doesnt need to be specifically a complete lifeform to adapt to its situation.Look at a virus for example. It has no nucleus but yet it can have the potential to kill and live inside host cells

0:13 That's what they are looking for on other planets.
Pseudynom Yeah, it probably makes sense to look for something we have some idea of.
Our chances of finding something are low when we do not know what exactly we are looking for.
I mean, if life on earth needed millions of years to become what it is today, why could it not be like us on other planets?
There migth be multiple solutions to intelligent life (like humans). Life on other planets would just try to evolve untill it gets it right.
But if there's only one correct solution (like humanity, even tho I doubt the intelligence sometimes, war etc. ...), "aliens" would look a lot like us.

Because of convergent evolution, they would probably have features that we find in some species on earth too. Since we are only concerned with intelligent and technologically advanced alien species, we can also assume that they have some sensory organs that resemble eyes and limbs that would allow them to manipulate their surroundings and create stuff. That's not much to go on, but it's something.
Exactly. I can't believe the SETI guy never mentioned it. Sight, hearing, smell and touch are pretty safe bets for senses, especially sight or they'd face a lot of obstacles. They may have more eyes, ears, limbs etc. than us, but evolution will work to remove what is costly or isn't necessary, like how our ancestors lost their tails. They'll need to consume a large amount of calories to support their brains, so they'll likely be predators. To create civilisations and technology they need language and to be cooperative, which also helps in hunting and would allow them to fall back on technology and become physically weaker. They'll also have to be terrestrial (or at least semi-aquatic), as neither fire nor electricity work too well underwater and they're lynch pins of technology.
Of course, that's not to say there couldn't be some intelligent squid creatures living together underwater, hunting/farming and cooking on hydrothermal vents, but they'd never be able to advance beyond the stone age. So, we'd never hear from those ones anyway.
That assumes that their system of life is similar to ours, and that they find themselves under similar selective pressures. Assuming they are organisms that harvest solar energy and store it in organic chemicals, then there are some barebones structures that you will probably see in aliens. Legs, for example, seem like the ideal structure for moving around on land for larger consumers. Holes for input and output (mouths and anuses) are also very likely. Beyond that, though, it would depend on the vast number of potential situations that life could find itself in.
Jonas Schwalb
That's just boring
I guess the SETI guy just forgot to mention the whole convergent evolution process. I kinda agree that hypothetical alien may have some organ that resemble ours, or at least some organism on Earth, especially if their Planet has similar environment and geographic history like Earth. I agree that at least they have something like sensory organ that capable to detect light and some some muscle-like tissue for moving around. But for something specific, for example, like opposable thumb, five fingers, or even humanoid, bipedal posture, is nearly improbable, even if they had selection pressure similar to our ancestor. I mean, just look on insect on Earth. They have some regulatory DNA like Hox gene that similar to us for determine body plan, but their morphology is radically different from vertebrates. Even their brain and limb are different from any vertebrates, because the cephalization process and limb evolutionary history on insect were evolved independently from vertebrates, or in short, insect head and leg are example of convergent evolution. So does octopuses eyes, brain, and tentacles. Yet, they have similar function like our organs. I believe that if someday we actually found an alien, it would be extremely different yet somehow familiar.
About technologically advanced alien species being predators: Assuming their environment is similar to ours, in that it's hard to get your hands (or whatever) on nutritious food, their ancestors probably were predators. But, since they are technologically advanced, they wouldn't have to engage in predatory behavior anymore to get food, just like most humans don't have to chase and kill their lunch anymore. So in such a species, given they have been technologically advanced for a while, you probably wouldn't find the behavioral characteristics you'd associate with predators. Since technological advancement heavily relies on knowledge being shared between individuals and cooperation, they would probably be very social creatures. In the case of a confrontation with humans, they would probably be more curious than aggressive.
But such an event is very unlikely, simply because space is pretty big.
Trying to imagine what an alien looks like is similar to trying to think up a new color, or a new sense. Our minds are too small and restricted to imagine up a life form from a new planet without seeing them first. Same goes for an alien language.
Not really, you should research 'convergent evolution', its quite easy to predict what aliens will look like depending on what job they are doing.

I wouldn't mind if it was just few second clip of them, but when it's half the video, it's just terrible and hard to hear, when this whole topic is really cool but the audio quality of the guests is just so irratiting.

Have you considered they interview people via phone/Skype?
I'm fairly certain they conduct their interviews across Skype or some other VoIP service since flying out personnel to conduct one interview for just one video is fairly costly. I'd assume most of these guests don't see the need in investing in a high-quality microphone and just use their laptop's in-built microphones to talk, and we all know how good laptop microphones are.

Imagine the aliens made a video on UA-cam called "Why we imagine aliens the way we do"
If you think of an animal's form as the answer to an engineering problem it's actually pretty reasonable to expect to see something familiar, like creatures with heads/limbs/symmetry etc. Simple solutions are more likely than needlessly complex ones. But likely not a biped, even on Earth those are rare.
Yeah I've often wondered would we even know an alien life form if we saw it. Also we always assume they would be working in our size scale and time scale.

It is almost impossible for an intelligent alien to have a body design similar to us.
There are too many alternatives.
The only reason people imagine aliens like those grey aliens -> 👽
is becuse the grey alien design was featured in the second part of the novel "War of the Worlds"
No you are so wrong its painful that people always say this excuse. Look up convergent evolution, unrelated organisms that are doing the same job will have similar body plans. Intelligent aliens will have the same humanoid design as us. Richard Dawkins talks about this in his 'growing up in the universe' lectures.
Also there are no other alternatives, if there was humans would not be the only intelligent species.
Sick Dece
No you are somewhat wrong....
Convergent evolution does exist, but us being bipedal and intelligent together is not much more than a coincidence, there have been bipedal organisms (one of the main feature of human body design) all over prehistory. None intelligent as we are.
Now exobiologists (the real people who speculate and try to predict alien life systems ) will easily accept that the bipedal element is not something essentially required for intelligence. There are too many alternatives. Convergent evolution will only force something to evolve something else the exact same features, only if it were necessary.
I am into exobiology myself.
I hate when people use convergent evolution to justify humanoid aliens. It is fallacious, it is as if you are saying that bones are required for wings (as in birds) so convergent evolution of any wings require convergent evolution of bones, no that is fallacious because there are alternatives to the boned-wing design, you can see wings in insect, an example which shows convergent evolution will only force a particular design along with a feature only if it were entirely necessary.
There are too many alternatives.
Today most exobiologists will tell you that all that is required to evolve intelligence is a spare interactive organ. In our case they were, hands which are freed limbs from a quadripedal tetrapod form. This required us to transition to a form with an erect posture and two feet used for walking (I. E. Erect bipedal, or humanoid) but this is just one of many methods, also this thing requires four steps, so will be a very rare body design among intelligent living things. There are simpler and more probable alternatives, for e.g. the octopus body design on a low gravity planet(see the original war of the worlds), a hexapod form to quadruped(or insectoid) (may be even rarer) and many more, each different and suited to the overall environmental physics of the planet you consider.
Infact it would be straight forward unscientific to assume that alien life would look anything like earthly life. Yes there will be thousands of examples of convergent evolution. These will usually encompass the easier to evolve, simpler and neccesary things. There may be organisms, mildly reminiscent to organisms of earth, all across the history of life.
There are thousands of examples which I missed, (see Stephen Hawking's into the unknown series on aliens, expedition, alien planet, blue moon, story of Aurelia, collaborative worldbuilding project, planet furaha) but you can find many more examples how body designs can turn out, and why erect and bipedal doesn't always mean intelligent. I highly recommend you to see "Trey the explainer's video on realistic aliens " that is available on UA-cam. You will love it. Also see "life on snaiad", do a Google Search, you will be navigated to the page.
Overall I conclude that though, I am not qualified enough to say anything in these matters, I suspect you are neither, infact might be more qualified as I am in these sectors (the scientific part) . So I recommend you to see exobiology blogs,Palentology blogs, and also Trey the explainer. Also see speculative evolution blogs.
Just do some research, you will come to know how wrong you are.
I suspect you are an ancient alien viewer, and that is quite wrong. Though it is entirely possible for there to be aliens with erect postures and two feet, as well as two hands. But this is as possible as it is that there is an analogs to elephants.
Just do some research before you say something.
Grey aliens were actually supposed to be relatives of humans in war of the worlds, possibly taken from earth many thousands of years ago to be used as slaves and livestock. most people were highly religious and thought that the human body plan was 'perfect' and so they chose them as the aliens to reproduce as opposed to H.G Wells' original version of the martians, which were surprisingly not far off what we could possibly see on other worlds.
as for sick dece's comment the human race's bodyplan is the only one of it's intelligence is because we out competed many others, such as neanderthals. Neanderthals were not as capable socially and actually had much larger brains than humans did, their bodyplan was near identical to the layman, only having a larger cranial cavity, wider hips and femurs yet they failed as a species. What i mean is the only reason we are so smart is due to the fact that nothing else is smarter than we are in the area that we control, the land. We took the time to evolve whilst not having a higher species to stop us. if land dolphins or something stupid like that existed then we would most certainly be beat to the punch by them. our bodyplan is certainly a good utility to have, yet you would certainly like a pair of eyes in the back of your head or more arms so you can multitask. we are far from perfect.
Uhh… no? Crows and elephants have lives comparable to what nomadic hunter-gatherer human tribes were like. They both have forms of communication (crowing, and trumpeting) forms of locomotion (flying, and quadrupedal movement) and simple object manipulation (grabbing objects with their beaks and trunks) and small herds/groups. Yet did convergent evolution make elephants and crows humanoid?
But you shouldn't forget about convergent evolution! If life does require conditions similar to Earth, we DO have reason to believe we would recognise their form. There's a reason (for example) that dogs and the Tasmanian Tiger look alike, despite having no close relation - evolution "found" the same answers to the same problems.
EDIT: Original comment said dingo instead of the thylacine, stupid memory.
nextpkfr ... dingoes Are feral dogs brought to Australia thousands of years ago...
Apologies, I was mixing it up with the Thylacine (the Tassie Tiger), which is a marsupial. Thanks for pointing that out.
I prefer to call that "ideal design"
I get what you're saying, but I like to think that we can look at the diversity of lifeforms here on Earth to imagine how alien-looking extraterrestrials might be. I still think the very first intelligent, space-faring aliens we'll meet would be some kind of octopoid.
J.Grey so you get what he is saying is true but you reject it for your imagination instead?
Lol how does anybody believe in Evolution? To be honest, that takes more faith and is a further stretch than any other belief system....I am willing to bet if there are aliens, they probably look very similar to us.
we believe in evolution because many things cannot be explained by one all encompassing being creating everything in seven days

The *Z U C C*
Carl Sagan was famously asked what aliens would look like and he very skillfully said,
"Now, imagine if you will an alien... and you ask, what will an alien look like, the answer is nothing like what you just thought of."
The answer is, aliens will look nothing like what has been imagined so far. I like this because it acknowledges the fact so often overlooked, even in this video, that humans are amazingly egotistic, short-sighted, and as a group rather dumb.
The reason artists, movie makers, writers, etc. have to make aliens so human-like is not due some level of being relatable, but rather having to accommodate the least common denominator when it comes to the intellect of the average viewer. It does not take much to change something people know into an "alien" and make it threatening. Our simple lizard brains do that for us automatically....
Unfortunately we are far to able to assign the tag of "the other" to anything or anyone and therefor label them as "alien".
My brother is ugly he looks like an alien
cruz Critical ops #rekt
It all makes complete sense, and this is why the 2016 film "Arrival" is so gripping and so brilliant, with its 'aliens' looking like anything but humans. But, on the other hand, speaking of human bodies, I once read an interesting commentary, that is, if alien species ever came to Earth, and all human traces had disappeared, including images, but only our manufactured products remained, the only machine that would allow these aliens to imagine what a human looked like is a bicycle. By studying a bicycle a human body could be shaped, in form and size; two articulated members spinning pedals through a crank, united by a trunk that rested on a seat, and two articulated upper members with fingers that manipulated the breaks and gear shifters on a pivoting handlebar, subsequently a head would not be impossible to imagine on top of that body.
I wonder what aliens taste like 🤔
Malan Short at least leave the aliens they are extinct
I always think they taste like squid (even tho ive never tried squid🤣)
I have a feeling my species (gems) would taste like light lol
that guys movie history is just an absolute laundry list of garbage movies lmfao
I'd say there's a very high chance alien life will be at least "*humanoid-esque*".
Having 2 eyes and 2 ears makes sense over 1, since it allows seeing/hearing depth. Having 3 however gives little extra returns while costing a lot more energy to make & maintain. A path evolution generally doesn't take. (also symmetry is often preferred because how an embryo develops)
I'm also willing to bet an alien has some sort of hands, to manipulate tools. And again; most likely 2. I don't think the number of fingers matters a lot. But probably not... 50+ fingers... An opposable thumb on the other hand (although preferably on both :) is more useful.
Having useable hands for tools also means you shouldn't walk on them all the time. So standing upright is a good bet. I'm hoping some kind of centaur's are roaming other planets but I'm not sure 4 legs and 2 arms (evolutionary starting out as 6 legs) has a lot of merrit.
Put these all combined you get something that's generally quite human-like. Ranging anywhere from:
- *Klingon's* from Star Trek
- *Wookies* from Star Wars
- The fishcreature from *The Shape of Water* (though I personally think land creatures have more of an evolutionary push towards intelligence, inventions like computers/fire/energy doesn't work so well underwater)
- *Na'vi* from Avatar
- *Salarian* (Mordin Solus) from Mass Effect 2
Etc. It's all basically the same shape.
I often hear the argument "it's arrogant to think aliens will look like us".
I say no: It's arrogant to think we humans are special and different from the plain galactic average.
Phyrexious All the advantages of having these features are valid on earth. They may not be valid on another planet or galaxy.
Phyrexious In a 3d world, having two eyes is an advantage over one or 3, but in a 4D world, the ideal number of eyes would be 3.
Even those assumptions are too anthropocentric. All we can really know is that they would require (assuming we're talking about intelligent aliens) some way to navigate and manipulate their environment and some way to draw energy from it. Eyes and ears are great navigation tools and danger detection systems on Earth but that neither means they would be in all environments nor that they are the only possible solutions. If for example the life on that world evolved not to harvest sunlight but to draw energy from geothermal vents or something then eyes may never even have evolved, let alone be in a human-like configuration. Similarly, hands are a great way to manipulate an environment, but they arren't the only way (think elephants' trunks, octopus tentacles and prehensile tails for just a few Earth-based examples). However, it seems fairly likely that the manipulator(s) would be extended away from the body, assuming that there even is a core part of the body of course.
As for more than 4 legs, why not? Insects have six legs and two pairs of wings (at least basally), arachnids have eight legs and two "arms" and things like millipedes can have many more than that, as can cephalopods with their tentacles. I suspect the reason why tetrapods only have four limbs is that it was the best solution when evolving from a creature with fish-like locomotion (i.e. horizontal wiggling), and once we had four limbs it was next to impossible to develop more (due to the way vertebrate embryos develop). If our ancestors had wiggled vertically we may have started out less like a lizard and more like, say, a caterpillar, which has drastically different concerns in terms of locomotion.
Without eyes, you wouldn't know about the sky, so no incentive to reach for the stars.
None of the appendages you listed would make it possible to design and produce a microprocessor.
Physical laws will likely lead to convergent evolution even on other planets.
planets/species that can't achieve space flight is of no interest, except in the case it's the planet's gravity well that looks them in.
@Mr Bojangles S Perhaps I worded that poorly. My understanding is that in vertebrates the structures are quite derived; for a functioning vertebrate limb, the creature would have to develop a pretty distinct musculoskeletal structure from extant vertebrates. There simply isn't a single "segment" that can be duplicated like in arthropods.* (As I understand it some structures such as vertebrae can be duplicated more readily, but even that doesn't always happen when one might expect it to; just look at a giraffe's neck.) That isn't to say that it is impossible for a vertebrate lineage to do this, but generally evolution works on what it has rather than developing new structures. It changes the shape of things, the size of things and the function of things far more readily than creating entirely new things, as mutations which do that sort of thing (without breaking the organism) are far, far more common. (For a good example of this consider the mammalian inner ear. It developed not from scratch but from pre-existing jaw bones.) To derive a new set of limbs would require derivation from a more basal structure, and every stage of that development would have to be an evolutionary advantage (or at the very least not a disadvantage). It is also my understanding that developing new bones is reasonably uncommon. (Incidentally, that is one of the reasons why birds have such varied bean shapes while other animals' mouths are far more similar: beaks can be modified quite a lot in a few generations while bones and teeth take far longer.)
If there is a way for this to happen that _evolution would actually favour_ I'm all ears.
*Obviously it's not that simple, but this is a UA-cam comment not a scientific paper.
@iamagi "None of the appendages you listed would make it possible to design and produce a microprocessor."
The design part is largely irrelevant as that is a purely mental task. As for producing them, our hands aren't really any better. Microprocessors are produced in a manner more like printing than manual manipulation. They aren't built by people but by machines built by people.
great video but why Mystique is on this video? she is a mutant not an alien hahaha
CLICK BAIT. DOESN`T ANSWER THE QUESTION POSED IN THE TITLE.
the answer is 'because of pop culture'
"I must say that we don't want to conquer space at all, we only want to extend the Earth to its limits. We don't know what to do with other worlds, we don't need other worlds. We need a mirror. We struggle over the contact and yet we'll never find it. We are in awkward situation of a man running towards goal which he's afraid of, goal that he doesn't really need. A human needs a human" - this quote from Solaris pretty much sums up our image of extraterrestrial life.

My favorite alien.
We are not alone I'm 100% sure.
An alien looks like trump
An alien looks like hillary
morrocoball takeover lol
morrocoball takeover Hillary _is_ an alien
They both are tbh
Oh no its getting political
I think if you're designing an alien, you should start with the environment they come from originally. How big is the planet? What's the gravity like? How dense is the atmosphere? If they come to Earth how do they overcome the differences between their planet and ours? I'd like to see a movie where they mathematically calculate what an alien should look like, based on these factors.
Interesting, however, if the Alien in question was intelligent and was able to construct machines (tools) they would have a very high probability to look similar to us in that they would have a rather large head (big brain), opposable digits, probably but necessarily bi pedal so that their hands would be free to build and use tools, they would need to have sight organs, and sound organs...etc. Given that mother nature is pretty efficient and does things the easiest way possible why would one think that she would reinvent the wheel just because she was on a different planet.
Michael Katt well it all depends on a few things. Firstly it only needs a way to manipulate objects effectively, this could be used by a variety of organs like trunks or tentacles. Also it depends on how many limbs it has. If it has six legs then bipedalism is probably not necessary while if it has four limbs that probably will be a trait that comes up. Also ears and eye may never even evolve in a intelligent alien, it may have sensory hairs like a spider or echolocation like a whale(although small eyes may be present in this case so they can see objects close to them) or if they have eyes they may have more then two. Let's say the planet they dwell on is ruled by a wide arrange of large aerial hunters that dive at there prey from above, any sentient species may have eyes on the back of their heads so they don't get ambushed from above. There are many ways intelligent ways life can evolve, we just happen to be one of them.
Who said the brain was in the head, huh?
@@jamesathersmith2191even if they have trunks or tentacles, their form would probably be a lot more similar to ours. Cephalopod physiology is not suitable for land for example.
I think aliens capable of radio communication should at least have some similarities to humans. They would probably have a brain, hands, legs, eyes and a digestive system. It may be the case that most extraterrestrial life evolves in a completely different direction. Maybe only a very tiny fraction of habitable planets allow for the evolution to a technically capable species.

Because people whom have encountered them describe them that way… or take their photos I guess?

The farther out I think of Alien life, the crazier I imagine they would look. Example, Martian life would most likely be single celled organisms, Saturn/Jupiter moon life would be single to multi celled (Like a small tadpole). But when you get to say Kepler 64b or something, they get bigger and seemingly more complex.
I imagine them with a sombrero :o)
on planets like mars alians would be thin and tall becouse the less gravity means things are less heavy so if you fall it would`nt hurt, and on huge planets life would be small but have more muscles then bones becouse more gravity means that if your tall and you fall down you could die, and on planets with a soupy atmosphere lot of wind would have a thing as big as wales that have wings to fly throw the liquid atmosphere
The universe is still very young, and our galaxy is one of hundreds of billions. There may be life in other galaxies, but the odds are we are alone in ours.
