    Really surprised to hear that the Legacy Pro is considered a power paddle. I just received my Legacy Pro and played with it last night for a couple of hours and found it gave me more control than the Engage Encore EX 6.0 I learned on and have been using exclusively for the last few months. Really no adjustment needed. I found it easy to get spin with it but although it feels an ounce or so heavier than the EX 6.0 I have when holding it, the actual swing weight feels less and thus hands battles I felt much faster with it. Really impressed and enjoy it so far. The only shot I couldn't make consistently at first was hard drives from the baseline, but I'm sure that will come pretty quickly.

      Spin testing in PB has a ways to go, in my opinion. Take a look at golf, by comparison. Spin rates are a really big deal in golf clubs and ball selection. But manufacturers NEVER list absolute numbers, even though the testing equipment for golf ball data is next level, using a combination of radar and laser imaging, and complex software. This is because of all the variables that could affect real world numbers, as opposed to those done in controlled testing environments. To your point, Will, until the advent of PB swing robots that put the same velocity on every stroke, proper spin measuring camera equipment, a standardized ball for all tests to be done with etc, there's really no point in paying attention to absolute numbers. A mere high, middle, low tier rating should be sufficient.

    Hey, based on the demand for more paddle review videos, what do you think will happen? Do you think more Pickleball UA-camrs will emerge to film that demand? This would be an interesting topic for a future podcast (your opinion on how large the demand for paddle review videos really is compared to the supply of quality UA-cam review videos, and how much more space there likely is for more UA-camrs to emerge before that demand you are seeing would be met).

      To be quite honest with you. If you like the Pursuit 6.0 and just looking for more pop I would look at the non 6.0 version that is thinner. After that I would look into the CRBN 1x 16mm and you will notice a significant amount more pop and some spin on drives. If you gotta take your budget into consideration and don’t mind a slightly shorter handle the Vatic Pro is a good option. The 6.zero double black diamond is a decent mid ground between everything and all the paddles I mentioned earlier (pop, feel, spin, budget) good luck

  • @rmonsipapa

    Another good review Will, thanks... Just an FYI… A little background on carbon fiber. I recently retired from a large military contractor and I worked in their composite center for the last few years. Toray is one of the largest suppliers of CF in the defense industry. It’s used in critical areas of military aircraft for its strength to weight ratio (i.e. it surrounds areas like the fuel tanks, black box locations and pilot seats and cockpit area because it can take major artillery rounds without failing). So, I would expect CF paddles to outlast any other paddles as far as wear is concerned with an added benefit of its weight reduction and strength. The carbon fiber can be woven in many different ways so it looks like Legacy hit on a pattern that is really benefiting their Pro paddle. So, it’s no surprise that other paddle manufacturers are jumping on the CF bandwagon and I would expect to see more.

    • @PickleballWill
      @PickleballWill  Рік тому

      Just curious if you could speak on the “texture” that we find on the raw carbon fiber paddles that we mostly see in the market. I was told that this texture is essentially just an imprint from the machines that happen to make the composite that is then cut out into the shape of a paddle VS in comparison to say the Gearbox carbon fiber paddles that are weaved during their construction process that doesn’t have the texture?

    • @rmonsipapa
      @rmonsipapa Рік тому

      @@PickleballWill Well, we always specified the type of weave in the material specs like angles of the CF, thickness, density, etc... I'm not familiar enough with the actual machines that are making the paddle material but if you look at the microscope close-up it's a weave, not sure how the machines could imprint that pattern but I may be wrong. Hummmmm, I wonder it Toray would answer the question. I'll send them a note and see what they say.

    • @rmonsipapa
      @rmonsipapa Рік тому +1

      Just got off the phone with Cris Dickert, Owner of Legacy Pickleball, super nice guy and very open with me. That material was engineered by Chris that way and not stamped on. Composite material is a real art/science with very complex manufacturing with the different layers and adhesives used to make up the face of that paddle. The thermal forming that they used is unique and they deserve a ton of credit for developing this material that's having such a positive impact on the new Legacy Pro CF paddles that hit the market. I'll be ordering my Legacy Pro and soon as I'm cleared to play again. Chris just started a company YT channel and he covers some of the build here, maybe he will get into more details in a future video: ua-cam.com/video/VMIm2KCdsos/v-deo.html

    I've never played with an elongated paddle, so I'm curious, generally does an elongated paddle have a bigger or smaller sweet spot? Or, is it the same size, but in a different spot?

    • @PickleballWill
      @PickleballWill  Рік тому +3

      Unless the hitting surface area of a paddle is substantially larger, the sweetspots of these paddles are usually around the same size but just shifted. Elongated ones have more narrower sweetspots. The traditional shapes have more rounded ones. You kind of have to think about your paddle and where the ball strikes the face in terms of distance from the edges. So if we take a traditional shaped paddle, which is more "circular", the sweet spot would also be more "circular" and wider. This is because the distance from the sweetspot center to the edges are more equal when compared to an elongated paddle. They honestly don't feel that much different to me though. I personally just like the longer reach. Hope that helps!

    Great review Will. My question is, the honeycomb core "wall" thickness is what is making the "pop" of the Legacy "feel" more than the others? Exactly the type of review I was looking for on these, thanks! I think I have settled on the CRBN 1x 14mm for myself, but a couple quick thoughts:
    1. I think spin numbers are overrated, while swing weight is underrated. Spin matters a lot while playing, but like you mentioned, exact rpm numbers do not matter as much as high/mid/low tier placement. Swing weight on the other hand, seems overlooked by many but can drastically change the overall feel of a paddle while playing, especially for people with certain playstyles.
    2. I also think we might be able to divide the categories of power and control at least one step further, not sure on the best names but maybe something like penetration/plough-through and striking for the power category and forgiveness and placement for the control category. Having only the two categories of power and control will always leave some types of paddles potentially misplaced. For instance is the Ben Johns Hyperion a control paddle? Well sort of, but its swing/static weight actually give it great penetration on drives and serves. Is the Vatic Flash a power paddle? Not really on drives, but that 14mm pop and quick handling swing weight would give it high marks on striking from the kitchen line.

    Does the Diadem Warrior edge still compete with this group? Or is it not up to snuf?

    • @PickleballWill
      @PickleballWill  Рік тому +1

      I think it competes just fine especially if you are a control orientated player. However I don’t think it’s a good value anymore at it’s price point of $175 when other similar or even better paddles are out there at similar or lower price points. I will say that I have probably played my best dialed doubles games in the past 6 months with this paddle

      I’d say they are all pretty comparable in power. The main difference is the feel that these new paddles have compared to the power air. They still feel controllable in the kitchen when dinking and that may be due to the sound. Haven’t played with the epic Power Air so can’t speak in that

    I like your analytic style and the way you qualify your choices, such as pointing out that paddle A has more power than paddle B, but who hits the ball as hard as they can every shot? Excellent point(s).
    I have a gentle suggestion which may help on your next video. When putting paddles in rank order, if you have the top choice as 1st and the next two as tied for 2nd, the next paddle after that is 4th, not 3rd. Count from the top down 1-2-3-4 and you can see why this is. I'm not trying to be a jerk as we all can understand what you are saying. I hope you take the suggestion in the spirit in which it is offered. It's all good. :)
    I was watching the first 2023 PPA tour event The Masters and it really looks to me like the top players in all divisions are hitting with more power than ever before and I see more power paddles being used than ever before. The dink game is greatly diminished in the modern game and you see more drives. We amateurs will follow what the pros do which makes this comparison of many of the top paddles very timely.

    So basically all these paddles are very close and comparable unless you are a 5.0+ it probably doesn’t matter that much which one you go with. Moreso depends on how it feels to you.

    • @scottfrancis13
      @scottfrancis13 Рік тому +1

      Depends on your price point. Got the 16mm 1x in Friday and the spin is ridiculous especially on serves my drives were dipping hard out of the air. Haven’t gotten that with another paddle. The CRBN 1x and Vatic feel similar with the Vatic maybe feeling a little softer. Spin on the Vatic was a little less than CRBN 1x but only slightly. Honestly for the money the Vatic Pro is a heck of a deal. If money not an issue I would get the CRBN 1x 16 as it felt to me to be a superior surface. Havent hit the Legacy Pro but reviews say has too much pop. Power is good ( I generate a lot of it)but only if its controllable. Why I ditched my power Air Invikta.
