Yes sir, tall skinny tires are practical. Lighter, better traction, no trimming. Better in every way in my opinion. I like the look more, people pick the fat tires only for looks. 90% don’t even know how to engage 4x4.

@@kg0173no they do not. The smaller surface area of contact on skinny tires causes better grip force per square inch. Also, given the same diameter, wider tires have greater rotational mass resulting in longer breaking.

@@Heywoodthepeckerwood "The smaller surface area of contact on skinny tires causes better grip force per square inch." But wider tire has more square inches, so where is the advantage, the overall grip is the same? Advantage could only be on softer surfaces when skinnier tires can reach stronger ground. Greater rotational mass.... I guess the effect should be real small, wouldn't make a difference. Asphalt race cars use wide tires, dragsters use wide tires, sprintcars use wide tires and its about competition there, so they use the best possible.

I ran this size in a Yokohama G003 m/t on my Nissan frontier. They performed very well for 8 months until my truck burned in a wildfire I was fighting. I just replaced it with a Chevy Colorado ZR2 and I'm looking at the new Mickey Thompson Baja boss A/T in 255 85 17 which is a 10.5 inch wide 35.

I like the Pizza cutter style tire. For most people it would be the ideal tire. It doesn't have that fat macho look to it but all egos aside they are a much better tire for the average 4wd crowd. Getting down to the hard dirt and not floating on top of the slick mud is better in my opinion. Ive graduated from youtube university so I know what Im talking about. hahaha. Love your dog.

@@trickster8635 Good point. There are some situations when wider tires are better choice. But I agree, for general off road use the skinny tires are better. You can see how in every Camel Trophy they used skinny and not very large diameter tires and the roads they did. Maybe wider tires are better in rock crawling like Rubicon trail, but in mud and sand, pizza cutters work better.

Been wanting to put on narrower tires for my 91 land cruiser, however local tire shop did not have any at the time….I ended up getting a set of Cooper’s 295/75R16 Discover AT3 XL….they have been just fine for the most part…..but I have always wanting something a little narrow and taller….seems these Toyo would fit the bill….I like that the tires are much lighter than the coopers and less friction on the ground….Again, thank you for posting this…have a great week from Montana!

I put a set of these on my 2019 Tacoma SR V6 and I absolutely love them. Once they wear out, I'll happily have another set installed on the truck. I am planning a regear soon, either 4.88 or 5.29s, Ive got an ARB Summit bull bar with a WARN 9.5XP winch with steel cable, so it's not exactly as peppy as it once was. But I'm happy to see what appears to be a growing demand for 255/85/R16 tires. This may be the Renaissance for the pizza cutter!

What size tires did you have before the 255/85r16? I've got a 3rd gen 4runner and have 265/75r16 on it now with plenty of room. Was wondering how they'd fit compared to the 265. How bad was mpg change?

    • @highplainsdrifter9631
      @highplainsdrifter9631 10 місяців тому +1

@@pj.walton8811 I had the exact same tire size as you, 265/75/R16 Maxxis Razr MTs. Awesome tires, but they don't come in the 33 inch pizza cutter size. I have the 2 or 2.5 inch lift Old Man Emu heavy load springs front and rear so I have plenty of clearance. They're fairly tall, I do not know if they would clear a stock height vehicle(maybe)? I think the MPG loss combining all of the add ons with the bigger, heavier tires has been about 2 MPG average, at least that is my estimated guess based on fill ups over the past year in comparison with fill ups and range running the smaller tires and no bull bars/winch. I'm looking to regear in spring, which will likely get the MPG back to where it was. Awesome tires though 👌 They're heavy but they're built like a brick shithouse and the traction is superb. Fantastic in the snow ❄️

    • @applesbighatranch6906

The Renaissance has begun! for certain. I can smell it. In fact... I'm slapping 33.1" X 10 X 17 onto my '16 F150... Toyo ATIII LT255/80-17... yes, they're 7 lbs heavier per tire than the fat P-Metric 285/70-17 a/ts but I'm getting a 10" section width (YES, thank you) in a true 33" -AND- an E Load Rating for, in my case, off-highway durability. Win/win/win. Safe travels to you, and the sooner you might re-gear the better!

If you were to go to a 33x10.5x15" you'd retain the stock width and still get the 33" diameter advantage (not to mention an additional 0.5"+ sidewall meat). And yes 15" x 6 lug wheels do fit on trucks originally fitted with 16's.

Funny everyone keeps talking about a little bit wider is only for looks and I say a little wider because 285 75 isn't super wide it's just wider. Anyways but then they talk about how great the pizza Cutters look and I'm like wait if when I talk about looks why are you talking about how great they look lol I'm all about traction do you find that 11.5 in wide literally catches less traction than 10 inches wide? Does 11.5 in cover too much ground and make it want to slide while 10in cuts in or just 10in cut in and dig easier while 11.5 touches just enough? Sometimes I feel like it's based on the terrain and how heavy the vehicle is I hate when things are in generalities

285 75s are also min. 10-15 pounds heavier which is a huge difference

Thanks, I just googled Tacoma steel wheels, they are OEM Tacoma spare tire wheels, there are a few places to source them online, I payed around $50 each.

You’re not on pizza cutters unless you get down to a 235 or less man…10mm is less than a half inch of difference in the width…still just a hair over 10” across.

Video is good.. The pace of it is very good. Your natural cadence adds to this.. Nice dog too. You should be kind and put something on that tailgate so he can get in easier, like leather or rubber or something, so he can get a grip. He could be injured trying to get in there with his feet all wet. Just saying..

You will have to trim some plastic depending on your wheel offset. A lift won’t really help tire clearance when your off-road

Good review. Did you get tire weight difference? Interested to know how on road/hwy handling, noise, mpg differences? Is this your daily? This is what seems to be size very common on overseas rigs. Think, its fairly easy to find this size there, just not here. Most peps think it's just not as "cool" looking? The trends on 4wd rigs is silly. Think'n bout mounting these on an fj80 & 100. Think my mpg would improve & be little bigger than fat "33's"

I’ve been considering the Falcon Wildpeaks, but much prefer the look of your new Toyo Open Country tires. Would the MT tires be suitable for weekday short city commuting and off road on the weekends? Also, how do these MT tires perform in snow compared to the Wildpeaks?

    • @predictionpain2632

The Toyos are fine around town, they can't compete with the falcons in the snow.I would take the toyos all day long over the Falcons

@@predictionpain2632 Thank you for your reply. I am moving to northern BC in Canada 🇨🇦 where there will be a lot of snow each winter, so I either buy 2 sets of tires or perhaps get the Falcon Wildpeaks. It’s a compromise.
