    You can also mix neocolor2 with some gesso to get an acrylic type paint for mixed media! Simply rub some color off on a toothy plastic surface like the caran dache blending palette, add a bit of gesso and mix.

    Very useful information Tara. I am loving the neocolor 2 - I like to do a mixture of dry crayon texture with smoother parts where water has been added. They are certainly versatile, and you’ve got me hooked on them! 👍

    Thanks for sharing these tips! I’ve just gotten myself a set to try them out. I’m still figuring out what I like drawing and what medium/a I like to use the most :) but the neocolor sets look like they’ll be fun to play with :)

      You can do it! It took me a while to work out what I liked drawing too. I am sure you will love them, they are so versatile. Sandra uses them just to put spots of colour on things, whereas I use then full on😀

    Neocolor I I s are opaque, so you can think of them as gouache in a crayon.

    Hi, Tara! Loved the video. I am using said crayons for the underdrawing in my acrylic paintings. Low and behold, I like the drawing showing in areas of the finished painting. Is there any way to fix the drawing without losing clarity or making the lines smear? Should I use light acrylic spray fixative? Just leave it alone? There has to be something you can do.

      Hi Joel, Thank you, I personally don't fix mine, but I have been told you can use a fixative that's suitable for oil pastels to fix it, although I am not sure if this would work with acrylics too. Another thing you could try if you are adding water to the Neocolors is to instead use acrylic medium on the Neocolors or a bit of clear gesso. These will help to fix them.

    A so modern stuff!
    Guess how would be the appearence of white over a dark ground and ink against ink. Xeers

      They work well over darker backgrounds. Check out the work of Belinda Lamour on Instagram, she creates faces on darker backgrounds

    Thank you so much! Can I use them as an underpainting for oil?

    • @KickintheCreatives

      I wouldn't. As they are wax I would imagine they will form a resist.

    My new question is: Do you think watersoluble pastels can compete with regular oil psstels?

    • @KickintheCreatives
      @KickintheCreatives  3 роки тому

      Personally I prefer them, but it's very much personal preference. Oil pastels are better for blending when dry and they smudge more easily than Neocolor

    amazing. So, what are you using to finish the painting? Do you use a fixative or go straight to varnish? I am using these crayons on my acrylic paintings on canvas. I love them for marks and added interest. But, find they smudge or move when I apply my varnish. help!:)

    • @KickintheCreatives

      I don't fix them with anything. I am wondering if they are more smudgy as the acrylic paint is more shiny. I have heard of people using Krylon fixative on them, but haven't tried it personally

      Are you using a paint on varnish? If so, have you tried a spray varnish instead? Would love to know if you found a solution.

      I personally don't fix them as I don't find them too smudgey. I store them in a box and frame a few. I have bought a Sennelier oil pastel fixative to test (out of curiosity) but haven't tested it yet. Krylon fixative doesn't seem to be available in the UK.

    I have ordered Neocolour 1 by mistake so how can I use them? In colouring books

    • @KickintheCreatives
      @KickintheCreatives  3 роки тому

      I've done that twice they look so similar! You can still use them to draw and paint with, you just can't blend them with water. You can also use them alongside Neocolor 2 to create resist effects.

    Where do you get the pencils that go on top of that pastel and what are they called?

      Any art store or Amazon. They are called Stabilo All Black Pencils

    Shaving the crayons is wasteful. You can use a watercolor brush dampened to pick up color from the back end of the crayon to preserve the point. Then the width of line of color depends on the size brush you use, rather than a sharpened point.

    • @KickintheCreatives
      @KickintheCreatives  3 роки тому +9

      You can also save the shavings and use them as paint

      @ Lee Sanchez good idea. Sounds like an efficient way to use and extend the longevity of the crayon instead of the faff of shaving and saving the crayon pieces.
