Louis Edward Curdes was an accomplished flying ace in the USAAF. While flying in his P-51 Mustang he came across an American Douglas C-47 Skytrain that was coming into land at a Japanese airbase. Given a moral dilemma of what to do next he took the step to take out the engines and downed the plane. He was awarded credit for the victory and added an American plane to his tally of German, Japanese and Italian victories. This weird episode of WW2 is even stranger as on the C-47 was his bride to be, Svetlana.

ah yes

Love your animation. I been watching your videos for a year now 👍
hai
I see what did you did there using William and Harry as the hair loss guys 😄
Love the way you portray the decision he made that day. A lot of sources just give the beat by beat of what happened but your style really shows the desperation in his action. Not knowing why the C-47 was there and not wanting to shoot it but he had no other choice no matter the situation. Great video again Yarnhub!
Yeah, also it’s not a C5, it’s called C-47/ DC3. Edit: he changed it :)
Imagine seeing a C5 Galaxy during WW2; the Japanese would've probably immediately surrendered or started praising it as a divinity

The fact the pilot wasn't court marshaled for the friendly fire but instead awarded and praised for his actions by not only the crew and passengers but his command is something surprising. I had forgotten about this story until now. Crudes saved a lot of lives that day. I am glad he was not punished for his actions and he made the right call even if it was a tough one to make. I don't know if I could have done the same in his boots.
If you know how the Japanese tended to treat prisoners of war and civilians during WW2, you'll quickly understand why it was much better for the C-47 to be shot down and ditch in the sea, than land on the Japanese airfield that had just been attacked by American fighters.

Learned this story first a year ago or so from *Simple History* and on other stories the other way around. I subscribed to you both because these overlaps still presented in different ways one another
i unsubbed from simple history because they always put ads at the start taking up over a minute and literally dont really get creative with it like yarnhub does
The "POV" shots of the sight are sooo good! Also the tracking shots of the Mustangs, which help the feeling of speed, those machines are operating at.

I love learning about war stories, thanks Yarnhub. I’m gonna keep watching till I myself become a historian!
Also props to La Croix who, by some irony of fate, was on the water and could explain the situation to the C-47 crew. If he wasn't shot down and was still flying, they would have paddled towards the shore and be captured by the enemy.
Don’t judge the animation quality people! Just respect on how the made it in such a quick time

If you’re in Arizona you can go see it! pima air and space museum. American flag proudly displayed beside the cockpit. Albeit sheepishly among the single IJN kill about 5 Luftwaffe kills and one Italian kill. one shy of a triple ace, shot out the c-47s engines do i think we’ll call it even. look up the story or read it for yourself on the plaque, just visited today!
It's a good thing those other kills are there.
Would suck to have his only kill of the war, be an American plane.
Amazing story, and so surreal that this guy is probably the only pilot to shoot down aircraft from all the axis countries, and even his own! Somebody write a script for Steven Spielberg, he needs to make this movie!
There were two other pilots with that particular distinction except for the American plane. I read the story in Flying magazine IIRC.
Holy crap the animation is glorious. Its getting better every time
The attention to detail in the animation is stunning and is what makes the story very interesting. I also like the new voice overs to give the characters more persona. Keep up the good work!
This was most probably one of my favorites, the amount of detail put in this video is so good
This man had mind-blowing skills, if you have played IL2 Sturmovik or any other combat simulator, you will know how difficult is to shoot down another aircraft, let alone shoot only the engines.
Real life is completely different than simulations no matter how good and accurate the simulation is

This another idea, Star of Africa, a fighter ace who fought for Germany during World War Two. He was Hans-Joachim Marseille. He was born on December 13th, 1919- September 30th, 1942. He was a very interesting person and as well a controversial person. He disliked the Nazi party and had trouble with many of the rules it imposed on, such as ban on jazz music, helping the enemy (He helped a downed Australian pilot) etc. He was highly decorated ace receiving the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and the Italian Gold Medal of Valour. I thought this might be an interesting pilot to cover and his claims that he scored against the Allies in the North African Campaign.
I got to see this plane about 2 weeks ago- it was pretty cool that it was preserved

Taking the name of "Bad Angel" literally. This is another awesome production, Yarnhub! :D
I love the change between Japanese and American identifications in the plane markings and pilots in the moment of unsureness. Brilliant video there!
this animation reminds me so much of a scene from battlestar galactica, where they have to shoot down one of their own transport ships, the olympic carrier, because they think there might be enemies on board. With the warning shots, wing-wiggle and all.
That scene as far as im aware
Also based on an irl event
But not this one, the event was also a pilot not getting respond from the other plane and sadly had to shot it down, but there are no survivors and the pilot is traumatized for having kill a plane that could have people on it
Also it wasnt even think in their case, the ship was detected with nuclear warheads, it definitely have Cylon onboard but does it still have Colonial citizen

Can you make a video about the Raid at Cabanatuan, sometimes also called "The Great Raid"?
It was a daring rescue operation in January 1945 which saw a force of 133 U.S. soldiers from 6th Ranger Battalion and the Alamo Scouts, with heavy support from around 250 Filipino guerrillas, sucessfully liberate 552 (every single one) allied POWs from a Japanese concentration camp protected by between 5000-8000 IJA-troops. Despite being vastly outnumbered and outgunned, the joint US-Filipino force only lost two men, while the Japanese suffered over 1000 killed and even more wounded.
There's a rather grand film on that iirr.
@@lordwintertown8284 I know, I have to that film to thank for getting to know about the mission in the first place. Real shame there aren't many more movies of it's type anymore.
I’m sure that was brought up all the time in arguments 😂 “you shot my plane down”
Crazy how far yarnhub’s animations have came in a year
Wow. From the comments, I was afraid this was going to be an unhappy one. But it was the opposite.
Lightning struck twice when this guy ran into the love of his life in the air. He saved her from capture and who knows what else by the Japanese. And that's to say nothing of the C47 pilots who pulled off a textbook ditching and saved everyone aboard. Then, he was spared court martial and rewarded for his tough decision and quick thinking.
Just a great story all around!
Yarnhub is like the nerd but the nerd is also extremely cool and can do everything perfectly
And knows people that can make the videos even better like Sabaton.
I’m happy to report that the p-51 “bad angle” still survives

The "Bad Angel", or at least a replica, is at the Pima Air And Space museum in my hometown of Tucson, Az. She's beautiful. And they need to find that C-47, bring it up, restore it, and park it right next to the Angel

Hi yarnhub, good video, I have a story you might like to turn into video: in 1944, deep in german teritory, (i didnt know their squadron, but I searched and it maches with data I knew) the pilot (R. Priest, but from searching I found out that his name is Royce Priest) from 354. squadron squadron was shot down with its P 51 mustang and his friend and captain of squadron (B. Marshall, from searching i found out his name is Bert W. Marshall) landed on the field to save him, but in that moment the group of german trucks with soldiers arrived and started to shoot on them, but the rest of squadron got them away with their M2 Brownings, and the downed pilot got into a tight canopy and they safely drove back to base.
PS: informations I known is the story, planes they were flying and first letter of their names and their surnames, but from searching I found their full names and squadron. The data mached, but if you are interseted in story, I can help you with further searching and data i know for now.

The two cats at the end is by far the best part of this video.
I think the funniest part is how they put a US flag on his plane as part of his kill tally
Awesome video! P 51Ds are my favorite American propeller fighter planes!
The North American P-51D was and still is the best WW2 fighter to fly. It was designed for pilots by pilots. The Merlin engine was extremely powerful and reliable. The cockpit was expertly laid out and everything was right where you wanted it to be. The aircraft was a breeze to fly and was incredibly maneuverable. Also, the plane had plenty of firepower with six .50 caliber machine guns. In other words, it was the perfect fighter for the time. The P-51D wasn't the only version though. Did you know there was a much more powerful and advanced variant, the P-51H, which was designed to take on German Jets? Sadly, that plane didn't serve long as the war ended quickly, and jet fighters took it's place.
You guy’s are my favorite history channel keep up the amazing work
I'd say Curdes really did prove to be a Bad Angel that day. And for good reason.
