my great grandfather, Bill Cool, actually was active on d-day, on utah beach. the day after, he was resting in a farm house when a german tank shot the house. my great grandfather woke up with several layers of wall and a german tank shell laying on his chest, that had failed to explode. the news article was titled “Luck Didn’t Run Out For Cool” little known story that i love telling when the subject comes up
@@ethangreenwood7763 I have a news article with an account from him, granted the article was written in the 90s and not from the 40s when it actually happened. Also have a picture of him in said article the day of the incident
I see Yarnhub made the same mistake as Spielberg. Those wooden logs in the water are facing the wrong direction. They were used to flip landing craft over and sometimes had spikes/blades to tear holes in the craft, or mines to blow them up. Funnily enough the game he is plugging (Enlisted, which is a great game) models the fortifications on D-Day correctly.
i went to the Normany American cemetery, it was very impressive seeing all those crosses. Sadly I Havent seen 1st Lt Jimmie W Monteith's cross, that same day i also went to omaha beach. To be honest, the beach wasn't anything special. But the thought of just walking there on a peaceful beach, knowing that so many young men fought and died there, its just so surreal.
My grandmother is french, she used to tell me that omaha beach used to be more impressive because it still had some fortifications and the crosses to stop the tanks... now its just a normal beach
He was just 26 years old. It's hard to believe, but that would of been ancient compared to some of the lads. Many of whom would of been no older than 18. Sometimes even younger. When I was 18, I was at college, going out partying with friends and chasing girls. These lads fighting a world war. It's hard to think of anything more humbling.
True but if you asked them about it they would probably say they are glad you get to do that instead of fighting in a war. War is hell even when your on the winning side.
A bloody hero on a bloody battle of Normandy! Bloody hell this video was amazing, Yarnhub! Keep it up! Still, rest in peace for the hero. He won't be forgotten.
This beach is called, Plage d'Or, literally Gold Beach because of it's fine and soft sand that appear to have a golden layer, it's at least recomforting to know that these soldiers died on such a beautiful place and saw this sand that might have appeared heavenly for them.
crazy and hella brave man, one of hundreds who saved us from total disaster and man this video was so much more interesting because of top notch animation and way of telling this story, hope seeing this have millions views in next few days : )
My late Uncle Mick 1923 - 2018, took part in the Invasion of Normandy, in the third wave of military personnel on the 10th of June 1944. He saw things that no human should ever see, and fought all the way to Berlin, in May 1945. He always refused to talk about his experiences, I am certain he was very traumatized by what he had witnessed and lived through. Ironically he married a German woman Helene, they were together for 49 years. Amazing man.
MEDAL OF HONOR CITATION For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty on 6 June 1944, near Coleville-sur-Mer, France. 1st Lt. Monteith landed with the initial assault waves on the coast of France under heavy enemy fire. Without regard to his own personal safety, he continually moved up and down the beach reorganizing men for further assault. He then led the assault over a narrow protective ledge and across the flat, exposed terrain to the comparative safety of a cliff. Retracing his steps across the field to the beach, he moved over to where 2 tanks were buttoned up and blind under violent enemy artillery and machinegun fire. Completely exposed to the intense fire, 1st Lt. Monteith led the tanks on foot through a minefield and into firing positions. Under his direction, several enemy positions were destroyed. He then rejoined his company and under his leadership, his men captured an advantageous position on the hill. Supervising the defense of his newly won position against repeated vicious counterattacks, he continued to ignore his own personal safety, repeatedly crossing the 200 or 300 yards of open terrain under heavy fire to strengthen links in his defensive chain. When the enemy succeeded in completely surrounding 1st Lt. Monteith and his unit and while leading the fight out of the situation, 1st Lt. Monteith was killed by enemy fire. The courage, gallantry, and intrepid leadership displayed by 1st Lt. Monteith is worthy of emulation. Born: July 1, 1917, Low Moor, VA. Died: June 6, 1944, Normandy, France. Place of burial: Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France.
That man truly led from the front. All officers should hear this story. In my 23 years in the Army I had many officers who absolutely led from the rear.
Awesome. I just visited Normandy so its really great to see this story be told here. I want to compliment the accuracy of the land depicted as well, I couldn't tell you if every detail is exactly right but it matches what I saw.

Superb job as always. Bangalore torpedo is sometimes called a 'mine' by laymen, it was designated as the 'Bangalore Torpedo', usually referred to as just 'Bangalore' in combat. Mines are designated as 'stationary explosive devices', land mines buried, and or anchored magnetic mines in water, placed and left until something triggers it. 6:19 love the detail of the Duplex Drive tanks, "Donald Ducks".
@@caelum2185 Yes it is where the Bangalore torpedo was engineered by Captain R. L. McClintock, of the Royal Engineers while attached to the Indian Army in 1912, to destroy mines, booby traps left over from previous wars. I think my favorite part of yarnhub’s animations is the way he humanizes the characters. The subtle gestures and expressions make them far more believable than other animated history channels, and they feel much more lifelike too
A truly spectacular video, I've seen countless stories of the D-day landings, but never this, thank you for sharing this story, and as always, bravo Yarnhub
Brilliant animation about a true hero. I've visited Omaha beach and it's a lovely sandy place which makes it hard to imagine the carnage that took place there. The cemetery is also a must and overlooks the beach - not all the casualties were buried there but you begin to understand just how many lost their lives.
