Fisher and Meyers were not the only ones there that day!. My father was the third spad there that day. While fisher made that rescue, dad was strafing the troops trying to capture Meyers and shot up fisher's plane. When he ran out of ordnance to hit the enemy. He would make ultra low passes trying to as he said "cut their heads off". He was awarded the Air Medal for his actions that day. He went on after the military to have a twenty year career with Pan Am. Lost him in '94.
My uncle Joe, a Vietnam vet, told me about a pilot that took off in a C-130 from a runway that was being overrun. Dodged machine gun fire, and an RPG. Never took a hit. I reckon he saved a bunch of soldiers as well.
Joe Jackson a medal of honor recipient took an rpg round to the plane that did not explode saved two radio controls if I remember that's why the plane landed in the first place though you uncle maybe talking about a different incident
The A-1 Skyraider was a supposedly obsolete WWII aircraft. The very things people would see as detractions of such an aircraft also made it invaluable during the Vietnam conflict. It was slow but nimble. It could get down in the weeds where the pilots could tell friend from foe and act accordingly. Unlike the fuel guzzling jets at the time, the Skyraider could both carry a heavy weapons load AND stay on station for quite a while. The Skyraider also could take a beating and still keep flying. Skyraiders would fly into North Vietnam and aid in the rescue of downed American pilots. It was very remarkable aircraft. I do believe that turboprop aircraft like the Super Tucano and others have a place on the modern battlefield where the ultra slow flying, low altitude, maneuverable airplane with a long loiter time backed up by a ton of weapons weapons would be an invaluable asset to our infantry in close combat......

Fun fact! Something like this had already happened before in WW2, when Flight Officer Richard Andrews landed his P-38 to rescue Captain Richard Willsie from a combat zone. By incredible coincidence, Andrews went on to be the pilot of the second A-1 that fought alongside Fisher in this video.
I was honored to have had the privilege of going up in a twin engine prop with Bernie Fisher back in 2005, at a Gathering of Eagles event my dad took me to; it was there that I also got to meet Gail Halvorsen, the Candy Bomber. One of the highlights of my childhood. ☺️
There was a similar story in 1944, on the Eastern front. A Hungarian Bf-109 pilot landed behind Soviet lines to rescue his downed wingman, snatching him away from under the nose of Soviet infantry. Quite a feat considering that the Messerschmitt was a single seat fighter, and it was notoriously prone to undercarriage failure, so landing one in deep snow, on unknown terrain was outright crazy.
One of my favorite rescue stories. Fisher's fellow pilots kept making low level strafing passes even after they ran out of ammo, to keep the VC heads down. One account states Fisher's Skyraider was found to have over 75 bullet holes. That's one tough airplane! Major Myers wanted to buy Fisher a case of booze, but Fisher was a Mormon.
My grandfather served in the war, retiring a Sergeant E7. He would tell us few stories but I remember him saying that whenever he saw an A-1 unleash hell to the Vietcong attacking his men, he knew he would live another day.
I had the honor to have met Bernard Fisher. I also learned that he was a family friend and that he knew my grandfather and my parents. He and all the pilots that day are among the greatest role models I could haved hoped to have.
The Skyraider Fisher used is now at the Airforce museum. I see it whenever I go in for work. It was sent there shortly after this in 1968 to be fixed back to operating condition and then preserved.
