yeah it seems like the 'almost cult classics' are split between 'not quite popular enough to be classic' and 'a bit too well-liked to be cult'

I don’t have a ton of great memories of my mom, but maybe my favorite is the day she let me stay home from school and took me to see Arachnophobia. It wasn’t the kind of movie I expected it to be. I swear I remember the marketing make it look like a zany comedy w John Goodman as the lead. I still ended up loving it. I actually used to dress up as Goodman’s character and run around the yard looking for bugs to exterminate. I’m thinking of bringing that look back for Halloween.

I feel the same way about snakes, the logic being they’re clean/sleek looking without all the weird parts and eyes of creepy spiders. We had two big fat ones build webs outside our door last night. They kept setting off the motion sensing light. Beautiful webs - we didn’t want to disturb them. That said, they were politely relocated to a new home today.

My arachnophobia has lessened thankfully over the years, but I still can’t watch this film without squirming a little bit throughout my viewing. The cast is amazing. When I was a senior in high school in 1991, one day we were told that the whole school would watch a movie for a couple of periods using our "Channel One" classroom TVs. Very very strangely, this movie turned out to be Arachnophobia which had swearing and a lot of other thing that are probably inappropriate for 9th graders. I never found out why this happened, but having a mild case of arachnophobia myself, this wasn't a very good experience.

A full on cult classic. I remember watching this with my parents as a kid and revisiting it a few years back and loving it. Great film

If you want to get terminally pedantic with the science, a "common house spider" could not mate with what is obviously some sort of tarantula. And spider egg-sacs don't pulsate.
For those claiming to not be arachnophobes, I would challenge you by watching, on as large a screen as possible, the William Shatner horrorfest, "Kingdom of the Spiders". If that film doesn't set any arachnophobic feelings to boil, then probably nothing will. I saw it when it first came out and I credit it as kicking off my own arachnophobia (which, thankfully, I've just-about eliminated). It's viewable in its entirety in the dark recesses of UA-cam.
Anyway, Arachnophobia is quite the gem with many great performances. Julian Sands severely creeped me out during his Warlock stints, but shines quite brightly here in the opposite direction as the doomed Dr. Atherton. It feels like a cut-down Spielberg film or perhaps a generously funded extended episode of Amazing Stories. Well worth a watch.

Shatner acting while covered by spiders is worth it just by itself 😅 but the production of Kingdom of the Spiders resulted in a lot of real spiders being killed on screen. It’s a fun movie but it sucks so many were killed just for a crappy movie.

@@davidmuldowney Shatner is a real, honest-to-God living legend and a chad amongst chads. It was his idea to have a live tarantula stuck to his cheek via spirit gum during the scene where he emerges from the resort basement covered in the 8-legged monstrosities.
Yeah, the production must've killed at least a hundred Ts, back before there was no real ethical animal treatment oversight. You can clearly see a bunch getting stomped on and driven over when the town is besieged. The bulk of the Ts used were Mexican Red Knees and they were dumb as rocks apparently, with many cooking themselves to death and falling off of things like tables, which often resulted in ruptured abdomens (a fatal injury). Speaking of abdomens, many can be seen as white as cue balls, as they were so stressed that they completely depleted their stores of urticating hairs.
There's a rumor that the production clipped the fangs of almost all of the Ts featured. Which I can believe, as there were no bite reports that I've read, which would seem impossible given the sheer amount of spiders being used and abused. Red Knees are generally considered a more docile species, but any tarantula can be riled to the point that it lashes-out.
If you think you might have latent arachnophobia, I would NOT watch KotS, as it will put it in full-on Fast & Furious overdrive.

I always thought it was jazzy how they tool the spider off the cover of a movie titled after the fear of spiders lol! I remember seeing this back in the day and using the restroom or taking a shower was pretty scary for a while lol!

Feels like a rather big stretch to call this an "(almost) cult classic". This film was both a commercial and critical success. Are you redefining the term "cult classic" to suit your format?

I bought it on LaserDisc. I think I've watched it once. Maybe I have arachnophobia, as I've seen Creepshow (with its cockroach segment) several times. Now that I think on it, I saw a giant spider movie on TV in the 60s as a kid which gave me nightmares. It wasn't "Them." I really like that movie for some reason.

This movie is the reason there haven’t been more Roger rabbit movies and why all the merch stopped being sold by the early 90s. Spielberg wanted a Roger rabbit short to be attached to this film, Roller Coaster Rabbit. However Disney was planning to attach it to Dick Tracey. Speilberg was apparently not happy when he found this out, and stopped giving permission for more Roger content. Only one more short was ever made, and there was the Disneyland ride, but the planned Florida Hollywood Studios expansion was cancelled.

I worked at Blockbuster when this came out on VHS. They removed the spider in front of the moon from the movie poster version - many people rented this without really knowing it was about spiders! They marketed it as a "Thrill-omedy!" and many families came back to the store very upset!

Frank Marshall should’ve married the spider matriarch......
She would’ve done a way better job “running” Lucasfilm.
