    Pardon the pun, but this is a “criminally” underrated movie. It’s absolutely hilarious and the viewer is totally rooting for them to get away with it the entire time

      My mother found that so intensely hilarious that I was forced to be amused despite not really understanding what it meant at all as a young kid, haha. I guess I knew what each of those four things was though!

      it shouldn't be that hard, right? the business is volatile. you cannot make 'money-making decisions'
      All you can do is fund the movies you want to see, and if it fails, that means your taste doesn't match with a lot of people's. Which is not a problem you can solve or avoid.

      It's not a sustainable business practice, though. Money and resources are finite. Even people with deep pockets can't just pull money out of thin air.

    Legitimately still one of my favorite comedies. My mom actually introduced me to this one as a kid, and she had completely forgotten all of the nudity, leaving her feeling seriously embarrassed when the scenes came up.
    She passed away about four years ago now and I still get to laugh at those memories. Seriously underrated movie, highly recommended to anyone who enjoys this kind of crime comedy.

    I’ve loved this movie since I was a kid. The humor, the locations in London, and the soundtrack are all top notch. It makes me so disappointed that you can’t find it anywhere. This is the kind of classic 80s entertainment I grew up with.

    Happy to hear you talking about this movie! I just read Paul Hirsch’s book “In a Cutting Room Far, Far Away”. He was an Oscar-winning editor, but also did work as a film doctor (fixing movies in trouble).
    He mentions being brought in to re-edit this movie and becoming lifelong friends with Jonathan Lynn.

    • @NicholasVargo
      @NicholasVargo Рік тому +5

      I’m a film credit junkie and noticed that Hirsch was given special thanks, which leads me to believe that he probably edited the last 10 minutes of the movie (The ending was reshot after playing to a test audience. Jonathan Lynn knew the original end of the movie wasn’t playing as well as the rest of the movie but was willing to let it go out as Fox was willing to release it as is. The day after the screening, Lynn had a meeting with Joe Roth, who ran Fox at the time, and instead of it being a marketing meeting, Roth asked if they could change the ending, and Lynn said yes on the condition of more money being given to do it right. So Fox gave him $650,000 to not only reshoot the ending that is on the movie now but also to tighten it and give it more music. I believe that is where Hirsch came in although he may have had more to do with the movie than just that). The original ending of the movie was Brian, Charlie, and Faith being chased all over London and ending up on a ship bound for Rio, where there was a sentimental scene to finish it out. Even with the sequence, it still played well but Lynn knew it could be better. For the record, according to Lynn from his commentary track, the old ending was never seen but there are some stills from the original final scene that have (including one that was on the back of the VHS release).
      If you ever can find the DVD for a good price, be sure to listen to Jonathan Lynn’s commentary. It’s a good one.

    • @Dippydipdip
      @Dippydipdip Рік тому +4

      @@NicholasVargo entirely possible that Hirsch was involved with the new ending. In his book he mentions changing music cues and tightening the overall pacing.
      Lynn seemed hesitant at first, but loved it, and related it to his theatre experience. He said Hirsch’s faster pacing was like seeing an actor picking up on his cues. That’s according to Hirsch’s account anyhow.
      I’ll have to track down the DVD. Love a good commentary. Thanks for all your insight!

    Today, i learned something. George Harrison not only had a film production company, but was involved with the Burning!!! Nuns on the Run looks like a pretty damn funny movie, i'd love to check it out! Sister Act seems to have ripped this film's premise off, with that one also dealing with a main character posing as a nun, & hiding from gangsters!!

    I love Nuns on the Run - I always have, ever since its premier. Not only did I enjoy it first time, but I find it immensely re-watchable, in a "comfort food" sort of way. Is it high art?: no! Is it a great comedy?: not really. But I find it engaging, surprisingly immersive and I always feel better for having watched it. If you're not from the UK and are watching it because of Robbie Coltrane - it is a great performance, but his greatest performance is NOT on film - but in the Jimmy McGovern TV Series: Cracker; and warning, that is NOT a comedy series, it is very dark, but Robbie is absolutely awesome. Also Jonathan Lynn - writer/director (prior to his movie career) was responsible for the UK's most astutely observed, and hilarious political comedy of the 1980s - Yes Minister/Prime Minister; and therefore I have a lot of time for him.

After you do that Ferris Bueller sitcom (jeez is every 80s & 90s film always getting a sitcom?) could you do SNL movies like Night at the Roxbury & other stuff, are they considered Forgotten Classics or Are they just bad?
