This is my philosophy I live by for my business. The drives, online backups, etc are worth the money.
Anything not in your immediate control should be encrypted of course.
Good information Shannon. You forgot to mention that you should test your backups. I learned that lesson the hard way. My data drive started dying so I turned to my backups, only to find out that it had failed without notice a few months before. Where I thought my stuff was being backed up regularly, I lost about 6 months worth of photos and some minor random files. Since then I make sure to check and test things regularly...

I have a file from my financials I still can not decrypt. I totally forgot which code I used or I mistyped the password. Hence why normally when I encrypt and backup the file. I make two to three copies. Each file has a different password. That way I could avoid the issue.
Almost three years later I am still trying to decrypt the two files. I think I corrupted one of them.
Yep. I had a backup cycle where I thought I disconnected the encrypted drive properly. An entire folder of data was corrupted. Good thing I backup one drive at a time. Soon I will have drives that keep backups for months at a time.
I run through MicroSD cards faster than most. Another one died on me. Fortunately it was just a random redundant for recent stuff.

Very similar story that I had problem recently. I already planned 3,2,1 back-up and great. I lost of my photo from microSD card inside smartphone due corrupted and didn't recovery so well. All I got bad pixels photo but my lesson learned. I made copy of thumb drive, external drive, and store on tablets. It happened with digital media suffering in the long runs before too late when it corrupted. Always have a back up. Great show, Shannon
I was testing a security app that was designed to erase MicroSDs. I did five years worth wear and tear in a month. I learned about many security flaws in MicroSDs that day.

It is becoming increasingly harder to safeguard against malicious malware like Ransomware. Especially the more recent delayed detonation type. These can even infect your incremental offline backups going back several months after the detonator was first placed.
It's why I have one server that can only receive data from a clean USB/Thunderbolt drive and no other part of the network can write to that server. It can then send a backup to my NAS server which I can (read/write) access via my laptop or desktop. That way all my videos and photos from my memory cards are only accessed via a newly formatted external drive via my smartphone each time they are transferred to my server. In theory only the working NAS storage, laptop and desktop are my only weak points that Ransomware could possibly infect.
The most vulnerable part is when you want to save and backup something like a Lightroom catalog. These can become quite large, but vital parts of your workflow. I would recommend using a dropbox or something similar instead. Making sure that the Lightroom catalog always uses local links for the images and that you regularly archive the much smaller individual backup files it creates to a USB key or something. In theory if you have imaged or cloned your desktop/Laptop drive the catalog will easily find them after a reformat.
It's not perfect of course and should always be supplemented with Cloud storage. But it can probably eliminate the need for retrieving that cloud backup considerably. It's a shame that Malware like this takes a lot of the fun and functionality out of having fast local storage. But when your data is critical you soon learn to compromise ease of use with better backup integrity. My solution might not be suitable for some people People have to work out for themselves what is more vital than the other.

Not exactly, you should have multiple backups. If you can afford it. One of your backups should be on the cloud. Make sure you encrypt those backups. Offline backups are important.
You should have backups disconnected from your computer and network. Viruses and power surges are a threat.
Hi, Great Vid! I thought the 2 in 3-2-1 was '2 Different Mediums' ie: HDD and SSD, DVD and HDD, etc. Also, if I'm buying a bunch of drives for a NAS, I buy them at differnet times and check to make sure they are from different batches. Drives from the same batch have a much higher tendency to die around the same time. I always learn a ton from your videos, Keep up the good work!
It does mean mediums, but by mediums it means devices, e.g. "your local working copy in your computer and your onsite backup to the NAS on your shelf", regardless of whether both of those machines are using HDDs.
What should I look for in a NAS?
So need help with this. Laptop with tiny ssd. Currently I use Microsoft one drive. If I upload from my laptop to OneDrive can it download to some kind of drive, I, assuming a NAS? I have too many externals with a discombobulating of duplicates. I have slow DSL so I would like to put the NAS at the BF’s place. Any suggestions for the non tech savvy? I need to eventually upload my externals but I really need a solution before I commit -thanks!

I know Im super late, but automatic backups are always, always, better. If you are worried about the encrypted ransomware files being backed up and overwriting data, then make sure you've turned on "file versioning"so the old versions of files are always saved, and you can just roll back to the decrypted
version . Pretty much every cloud storage provider and NAS software supports this. Manual backups require you to remember, and in the urgency of daily life, jumping from one task to the next, preparing for emergenies just gets forgotten.
I remember you having a Synology nas for backing up but I'm wondering do you use Synologys backup program or a 3rd party backup program I kinda hate how Synologys backup you have to use there program to access the backup files
I use the Synology backup software. It works for my needs and isn't obtrusive
How do you automate a local backup if you should disconnect the local device after each backup?
I don't disconnect my local backup, but if you do, you can use third party software to automatically update the backup each time you plug it back in.
Would be cool if rpi4 could be turned into a freeNAS with raid controller.

I have a Synology NAS
First it is all about a that pumpkin spice latte, second I have a story like that as well. I had all of my photo's on one portable HDD and finally thought hey, maybe I should back up this data and put it in 2 locations. They day I decided to try to copy the data the drive failed. So I got the drive, plugged it in only for it to fail. Took it to a data recovery shop only to find out the head of the read/write arm was pushed down on the platter so hard that it scrapped the disks and destroyed the data in such a way that it could never be recovered, not even by the clean forensic lab I took it too.
That's a nightmare! Do you have reoccurring backups now?
