5:00 - Fun TSA loophole - if you check luggage that has a firearm in it, you are allowed to use your own lock that *ISN'T* TSA-universal. _AND_ you can bet your ass TSA won't want a bag labeled as containing a firearm to be lost. You do have to have your bag manually screened/searched (in front of you) before you lock it and send it for being a checked bag.
The fun part? A race "starter pistol" (essentially an overgrown cap gun, not able to fire real ammunition in any way shape or form) is counted by the TSA as "a firearm". And starter pistols are 100% legal for anyone to own and travel with in the United States.
I know a professional photographer who uses a hard-side camera case, and has a race starter pistol in it. Thus it gets counted as "luggage containing a firearm" and he gets to lock it with his much-more-secure locks. And his camera gear bag has *NEVER* been lost, even while his checked-at-the-same-time clothes suitcase has. (Yes, he travels with too much camera gear to bring in a carryon.)
Note: If you want to use this trick to travel internationally, verify the local laws of every country you're going to pass through regarding the legality of starter pistols. Some countries will be just fine with them, others may require some sort of permit or credentials as someone who should logically have a starter pistol.

One security tip I have is a physical security tip. Buy a Pacsafe exomesh bag cover that will fit your backpack which you put your laptop, tablet etc it when travelling. At your hotel, put all your documents and valuable devices in your pack, put the exomesh over the bag and secure to something sturdy in the hotel room. A radiator, the toilet u bend, a sturdy something and don't use the cheap padlock you get with it. By an aftermarket one from Abus for example. This will stop the 30-60 second theft issue of someone walking past your hotel room when it's being cleaned and that person pretending you're the guest and grabbing a bag or valuable item while the room is being cleaned. Or, as does happen, the cleaning staff member having a little dip into your travel money or stealing something on your last day in the hope it won't be noticed. Also handy to have when you're in a pick pocket area or travelling on a train/bus as you can secure the bag out of sight or nearby to a railing or other item. Useful under a table as you can lock the bag to the table leg for the single leg types or through a chair. No one wants to try and go far with a table or chair being dragged behind them!

The one rule that I think is probably the most important (and one that I frequently break) is to only travel with what you absolutely need. It is very easy to over pack because you needed that one thing that one time and it sucked without it.
I think a travel router is valuable because it offers both convenience and security for a small foot print.
The important one here is to only travel with the data that you actually need. This minimizes the impact of a slip in opsec. The travel routers I use can VPN into my home network should i forget something important but my drives only contain what I actually need. If you do not need 10 years worth of data for your trip then don't pack it.
I make sure I only pack the cables I need for what I'm expecting to do that trip otherwise you end up with 15 usb c cables but not that one displayport to hdmi you actually need...
The last one I have is more important if you're traveling somewhere that has less respect for individual privacy. If you cannot travel with a clean laptop then ensure that the drive on that laptop is encrypted. If you are able consider using a live boot drive for anything that you need to secure. Tails comes to mind, kali has one, Windows to Go could be configured to work too with the caveat that it's still windows. There are other options for live, persistent usb that offer varying degrees of privacy and security. The idea is that it is an extra layer that someone has to go through to get to your files that many arent going to consider when snatching your stuff.

A portable router/AP is a great way to go if you're staying at a hotel. Something like a GL.iNet Beryl or Slate is good. They run openwrt and you can set up a VPN on it. You also have the advantage of only using one device to connect to their wifi or ethernet, as some places have a limit on the number of devices you can have connected.

I travel constantly for work and do exactly this. Work computer, personal devices, streaming stick all through one connection anywhere in the world. It works great and saves a lot of hassle.

When I'm forced to use public WiFi or internet, I will use my gl.inet travel router and connect my devices to that instead. This way, the network only sees the router and not the devices behind it. It's also easier to setup the internet connection/VPN on the travel router and not worry about setting up every other device. I also had it once where you got one free connection to the wifi and had to pay extra for other devices so the travel router was also a bonus to have in this situation.

The Android WiFi auto connect setting is just allowing automatic connections to *this* network, the one you are currently connected to. I don't think you want to turn that off if you're on your home network.
I don't want to turn off NFC because I use it occasionally and I don't want a multi step process to turn it on then use it. But there's a setting for require unlock to use NFC which seems like a good compromise.
It would be interesting if you could give some specific examples of how NFC or Bluetooth might be vulnerable.

    • @AnonymousFreakYT
      @AnonymousFreakYT Рік тому +1

She mentions turning these things off specifically before traveling. Obviously go ahead and leave auto-connect to your _home_ network on when at home. Also, some phones have separate "auto connect to *ANY* open network" versus _known_ networks.
Most phones have a "quick access" NFC toggle you can put in their quick-access menu.

I travel frequently using a Gl.iNet router. I've used both the slate and Beryl routers. Both work great, the Beryl is slightly faster but also slightly bigger and comes with a larger power adapter.

@@willstikken5619 I have an old Netgear travel router but love the fact it has a LAN and WAN port. When my family goes to our resort time share, I link it to their internet but I also attach my laptop and a small NAS with media to a small 5 port switch that's plugged into the LAN port. Its a nice little network but want to update the router.
