  • ☝️ Don't overlook a backup up as part of your security. When the worst happens, it's your backup that will save you.
    ☝️ Backups ARE Security
Backups can save you from malware as well as hardware failure and user error. When used properly, backups also provide you with a safety net from even the most destructive of malware: ransomware. Backups are an important part of your overall security.

Leo, you have been exhorting people to back up so hard, all the time, it is such a shame that so many people just dont have a clue about what to do and how to do it. Thank you for your continued wisdom. I really appreciate what you do and how you do it.

The other major points missed (home): live (nightly auto), secondary removable drives x2 (weekly), offsite drives (3, one being 'cloud', monthly with test restore).
Major point missed too often is that you should periodically restore backups to make a testable check. See top many places where when needing to restore the backup/media or restore processes fail WHEN NEEDED.

People typically only care about backups after the second loss of data. Lose it once and you mistakenly believe it won't happen again. Till it does.

Sadly, Macrium Reflect recently announced they are retiring the free version of their imaging software on 1/1/24. I know there are other free versions of imaging software, such as EaseUS, but I've always considered MR to be the gold standard. I've been using MR's free version for a decade and it has never ever let me down.

Can you do a video about bit rot and how to detect that ? I’m currently using Macrium Reflect on a couple of hdd around the house and I use arq backup to S3. But how can I detect that my data is slowly has some bit rot ? Do I use a nas with raid and a data scrubbing job to be sure ? Thanks 🙏I font feel safe using external drives

Leo, you just keep on "harping" about backups. I have a lousy memory and often forget to do them. Every time you mention it, I clone my HDD so I really appreciate all your "harping". One thing I would like to ask. Can I clone my HDD to a flash drive. I have a 1 TB drive using less than 100 GB. I also have a 256 GB flash drive and would like, if possible, to clone the HDD to the flash drive. Is that possible?? Thank you and take care.

Depends on the software you're using, but usually yes. I tend to dislike flash drives for this kind of work because they're often cheap, and we don't really know how long they'll hold the data.

@@askleonotenboom I'm going to use Macrium Reflect to clone the drive and the flash drive is a Cruiser Glide 3.0 256 GB. I've got a cruiser Blade that I've had for several years with no problems. It's a temporary backup until I can get another HDD.
Thanks Leo. I appreciate your reply.

@@askleonotenboom Thanks Leo. I've been asking all over the internet but haven't been able to get a straight answer anywhere. I'm going to attempt the backup tonight when it's time to shut down. Hopefully it auto shuts down the computer when the clone is complete. Again, Thank you Leo.
