  • June 10, 1990 - In what could be considered his magnum opus, Bill Laimbeer reached peak heel status in his team's 121-106 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 3 of the 1990 NBA Finals. In 40 minutes of work, Laimbeer achieved the rarest of triple-doubles, scoring 11 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, and drawing a startling 12 non-shooting fouls. Utilizing subterfuge and his Razzie-worthy acting chops, Laimbeer single-handily decimated Portland's entire front line, relegating four Blazers to permanent foul trouble (Jerome Kersey, Buck Williams, Kevin Duckworth, and Clifford Robinson all finished with at least five personal fouls).
All told, Laimbeer drew three charges, three non-charge offensive fouls, four loose ball fouls, one defensive foul, and one technical foul. These contributions, in addition to a strong night's work on the glass, stepping up helpside, and scoring when necessary, thrust the Detroit Pistons firmly in the driver's seat, giving them a 2-1 series lead and setting the stage for their second consecutive NBA title.
In addition, the Pistons' Game 3 victory broke a 20-game losing streak in Portland, dating all the way back to October 19, 1974, leading to Laimbeer cheekily proclaiming after his disqualification, "We just broke the streak."
    Bill Laimbeer's Foul Rundown:
    1. Charge (Duckworth)
    2. Offensive Foul (Duckworth)
    3. Loose Ball (Robinson)
    4. Charge (Drexler)
    5. Defensive Foul (Kersey)
    6. Offensive Foul (Williams)
    7. Technical Foul (Kersey)
    8. Loose Ball Foul (Robinson)
    9. Loose Ball Foul (Petrovic)
    10. Offensive Foul (Duckworth)
    11. Charge (Williams)
    12. Loose Ball Foul (Williams)

What a brilliant player and most valuable teammate. I had no idea he drew 12 fouls , yet I’ve watched this game countless times, of course my first being when it was live telecast. On reflection, I’m surprised the Blazers won a game this series. They were playing checkers and the Pistons , led by Mr. Laimbeer, were playing chess. You Ryan are my favorite UA-camr. I can fully respect the belief that Laimbeer didn't play ball "the right way," but I can't stand for the mischaracterization that "he just hit people." Dude (and the team as a whole) was tactical with his "Bad Boy" antics. Like seen here, he lived for getting in opponents heads and pissing them off. And he shot free throws very well for a 6'11 center, letting him capitalize when they vented their frustrations on him.
He also had nice 3-point shot selection, making him effective in transition, where he was often the slowest player on the floor.
And he's arguably the most successful coach in WNBA history. And I mean, sure, take the low-hanging fruit jokes about the WNBA, but haters like to paint a picture of him as some Neanderthal, when he's clearly shown the ability to adapt his understanding of the game across different decades and leagues.
I love the sound bite of him from the bench in this game, where he's rooting for Isiah to do his thing now that Laimbeer has "half their team thinking about me."

The Trailblazers of the Clyde Drexler years were a very talented team - even NBA championship talented, but they had serious issues with their mental makeup for the biggest stages and challenges, which kept them from actually winning a ring. I put them and the Atlanta Hawks of Dominique Wilkins' best years together in this category: both teams felt the officials were totally out to get them, and let that interfere with their ability to just play the game.....

    • @Kickingit06

Laimbeer was the MASTER when it came to the 'taking charge' and 'getting under the opponent's skin' and the 'mental games' while also breaking a team and/or player mentally also he was the 'king of flop' which means the refs are stupid enough to call it so in truth, Laimbeer (and the Pistons) knew how to manipulate the refs, which means they can make adjustments of the flow of the game and the temper-mint of the officials and adjust: this is high-level mental basketball that other teams tried to copy but COULD NOT to this day and this is how you deal with the NBA being against you -- you manipulate the entire situation to your advantage: Magic, Bird, Jordan, or anyone else was favored by the league and all Detroit did was kept playing.

I've heard people at the time called the Trail Blazers "The bad boy Pistons of the Western Conference".We're they (the Blazers) known for being a physical team at the time? Also could a prime Arvydas Sabonis won the Blazers this series, and the series against the bulls?

    • @respectedlocalgentleman7108
      @respectedlocalgentleman7108 2 роки тому +3

No, they weren't close to the Pistons. The west was just wide open back then and Portland had some physical guys so they were trying to hype them up. No, a prime Sabonis couldn't have won them the series because they had an idiot coach in Rick Adelman who wouldn't have played him.
Back then European players were treated like they were inferior and got few opportunities. Adelman had Drazen Petrovic, who was way better than Sabonis at the time, and he sat him on the bench.
The Blazers could've killed the Pistons and possibly even Michael's Bulls by playing a three guard rotation with Terry Porter, Clyde, and Petrovic. But Adelman was too dumb for that, even though Chuck Daly was doing it to him with Isiah, Joe D, and Vinnie Johnson during their finals series. Come to think of it, a starting rotation featuring Porter/Petrovic/Drexler/Cliff Robinson/Buck Williams would look a lot like the modern Warriors do and might have made an all-time great lineup. Too bad they never once played in this format with Adelman.
      TL;DR: Coaching matters. A lot.
