The best part is how they somehow made the song go along with you, it's one of those incredible multilayered music tracks that responds to the player. I walked through the entire maze and only moved faster to dodge/flank enemies during the fights, and the song's lyrics only showed up during the fights, with some really cool seamless transitions between those and the corridor sections. The best thing is that this starts unexpectedly and turns the next few minutes into one of the best experiences ever in a game! Man, Remedy is so good at their stuff.
The funny thing about all of this is that having Ahti's walkman you go into the maze surely expecting at least more of his finnish tunes. But instead you hear another badass Old Gods of Asgard/Poets of the Fall song just like the concert fight in Alan Wake. Love you Remedy.
I'm not gonna lie, this is better than the concert from Alan Wake. I love that moment, but there's so much more going on here. The power you feel once the voice and guitar riff comes in, you know what's happening. You're flying through the air throwing shit at interdimensional beings, all while navigating a reality warping, shapeshifting maze. I can't think of anything in gaming that has sent such a powerful adrenaline rush through me. This is the moment where the gameplay and story come together beautifully. If you haven't figured out what's going on, you get a badass song to explain it all for you. It's perfect and very easily one of my favorite gaming moments ever.
Your description of this experience nailed it perfectly! It was like the whole game came together in a perfect crescendo - all your abilities, all your understanding of the world, all the skills you learned and grew, your capacity to accept that reality is literally being warped right in front of your eyes and not only is it not a problem, you can fucking fly through it all like a superhero wiping the floor with bad guys like they’re made of paper - and to top it all off you have a truly epic metal performance to guide you through every second of your ascendancy? Gaming perfection.
If most of the game played like this then you wouldn't enjoy this section of the game. Game design is about knowing when to push and when to pull, when to go big and when to keep things small, and so on and so forth. The Ashtray Maze is only as good as it is because it's a moment where Control loosens its restraints.
Some may think I'm being hyperbolic when I say that this is easily one of the best games ever created. PERIOD. This level and the design and the music are all so sympatico. They did something in this level and in We Sing from Alan Wake 2 , that is just so amazing. The song loops on an instrumental verse section or bridge until the player catches up , and then the song loads the next lyric track at the perfect time, without you ever realizing the song is as long or as short as you the player need it to be. That is pretty damn amazing!! I love the 2 survival style missions in Alan Wake 1 and Alan Wake 2 that are scored by a Poets of the Fall track, also We Sing in AW2 is amazing, but for me this is the best Song / Combat level of all their games.

So let me get this straight. The maze is an OoP that should literally be unsolvable for anyone except the user and someone the user gives permission. And Jesse never bound the ash tray so she tamed the maze through her own willpower. Awesome! It’s like the Oldest House itself is an ally!
@@ayushverma1755 Well, they still weren't completely wrong. Reading between the lines I'm assuming that the janitor is pretty much the personification of the oldest house.
Honestly, OOP's seem to have personality. The FBC is generally very cold and analytical, with a predisposition towards researching with cold objective logic. Like the maze. It keeps out anyone but those the binder gives permission. But I don't think thats ENTIRELY accurate. That is to say, I don't think 'the binder and those the binder gives permission' is the only way to navigate the maze. I think the maze really likes this song, so it's like 'OH hell yeah c'mon through if I get to feel that!' The way the maze doesn't just have a predetermined path that opens statically, but still shifts and warps around you throughout the experience... I think the maze is dancing to your music.
Notice how the song doesn't have any instructions on how to solve the maze. What makes the difference for Jesse is that it's a song about her where she is told that her special powers doesn't come from Solaris or any other entity - It is all her! She just needs to realize it and believe in herself.
This game is something else man. I like the gun combat combined with her abilities. And the level desighn is absolutely amazing. One of the best games i ever played. Certainly one of the most brilliant games out there. Its an experience for sure.
I finally got to this part of the game and got through the maze. I only bought this game last year, and have been playing other stuff in between, but I've seen the clips and heard of this legendary part of the game, and it lived up to the hype.
This game is soooo underrated man, look at this how beautiful art of piece, i love this game, they havent make a game like this game anymore, this is sad, after four years later i m here
It's always amazing for me to see gameplay to really appreciate how awesome the game is because I'm always focused on playing and don't really get to notice all the crazy $hit going on.
The first time you truly feel god-like with your powers. What a masterpiece of a level, what an amazing game. Easily one of my top gaming moments of all time.
While I consider this game very good it's not god-tier by any means overall. However this section of the game was one of the best moments ever in video gaming for me. I have not grinned harder for 5 minutes straight during any game I have played in recent memory. The music and graphics, the physics, the maze, the fact that it seamlessly directs you through it and threw lots of baddies at you but removed most of the challenge in a good way to ensure nothing about it would be frustrating or tedious. It was just a bad ass gauntlet of you flying around punishing evil with superhuman powers, loads of explosions tastefully placed throughout the jam session of awesome. It is a perfect convergence of all of the games strengths they are surely proud of and they have every right to be.
I had surge and 102% blast radius mod unlocked for this mission. With a fully updated lunch tree. Constant explosion and lunched furniture made this a blast to play through. Pun intended.
I’d heard so much about this level, so much hype, yet when I played finally played it two nights ago, I realized pretty quickly that it was one of the greatest moments in gaming I’ve ever experienced. Every detail is perfect. It was so satisfying on every level.
(Kinda long comment but I'm basically speaking about interesting aspects of Control and, what's important for me, asking for recommendations of games, books, movies etc that reminded you in some ways of Control because I'm in post-game withdrawal. It's serious and maybe life/psyche-threatening, especially psyche. A good TV series like Legion would be more than welcome! But first...) Excellent bunch of comments! I was shocked when I found out the number of people complaining about the map. It's just The Oldest House doing its thing, haha, well. I think developers and concept artists + level artists did a great job reminding you to look up names of the sector on walls etc. I can't remember when I played like this (without mods disabling UI etc, generally making the game more hardcore) and had so much fun in the last few years! In adventure games, I used to write down tips etc in my notebook but in an action-rpg? Well, that's something new. Reminds me of making maps as a Game Master in traditional Pen 'n Paper sessions...You can't forget that, just like Jesse, you are supposed to be in a constant fight-or-flight mode, confused and shocked when everything around you changes, you too. And aesthetics? It's BRILLANT. Dark and dreamy at the same time, a little bit nightmarish, just like those dreams that start quite normal but you can FEEL there' something going on that's not right and you can't wrap your mind about it. This feeling is CONTROL in a nutshell TBH. ;) This game makes use of an effect known as "uncanny valley" (google it, there are a lot of examples) to a great extent plus Jesse's face was a great choice when it comes to mapping and atmosphere. (Asymmetrical Suit FTW!) Speaking of levels/sectors...I love brutalism and generally architecture and sometimes I just have fun with levitating for a good hour or two and take some pretty screenshots. The Colour palette is also very well done, reminds me of Twin Peaks and sometimes Fargo, great shows and classics, too. It's also worth taking it slow and reading all notes, other collectables but that's pretty obvious. Less obvious are other signs (not those like "PARAPSYCHOLOGY ---> ELEVATOR
this bit of the game had me in its grip. it's far enough in the game that your abilities are evolved enough to enjoy the combat and the music complements the gameplay of this bit (the intro with the shifting walls, the slow part when you levitate down, the kickass fast paced parts in tune with the combat). Remedy has a habit of doing this. see the Alan Wake fight on the scene of the Old Gods of Asgard farm. awesome design.
This entire game was such a pleasant surprise to me, I loved it, but then this part was the best surprise within the surprise. Just a fantastic track, fun section, what a game.
I watched this till the end just to see how the track ends. In my case I somehow exited the maze just in the right moment for the song to end. In this case the run was quick and the track couldn't finish but they made it fade and ended in the singer shouting "Control". I'm amazed by this attention to detail. The devs made sure that the song ended right on every situation.
You expect another annoying videogame maze level and then Remedy subverts your expectations delivering an amazing old school bonus level. Well done Remedy.
I love the fact that the janitor was always listening to some tango and singing in some weird ass sweedish or some shit. And then sundely the metal kicks in and you are like "Hell yeah!!"

Notice how the song doesn't have any instructions on how to solve the maze. What makes the difference for Jesse is that it's a song about her where she is told that her special powers doesn't come from Solaris or any other entity - It is all her! She just needs to realize it and believe in herself.
almost every game is improved by at least one ridiculously indulgent setpiece like this
This maze was a masterpiece. The entire game was sick but the maze... dude :D
Especially with the music from "poets of the fall".
this was soooo good, i will keep some memories from this incredible game, especially this part.
This game is something else man.
I like the gun combat combined with her abilities.
And the level desighn is absolutely amazing.
One of the best games i ever played.
Certainly one of the most brilliant games out there.
Its an experience for sure.
That moment was so cool that even Jessie said it was awesome.
Gave me 'Let's do this!' vibes.
I finally got to this part of the game and got through the maze. I only bought this game last year, and have been playing other stuff in between, but I've seen the clips and heard of this legendary part of the game, and it lived up to the hype.
Once you've played this game, it forever stays with you. In your dreams
best moment of my 25 years of gaming history. thank you sam lake!
I’d always wondered what Ahti was listening to. Thanks so much for this moment, Remedy.
this game was so amazing
Damn I just finished this game and started the DLC but this made me want to go back and experience this awesomeness again 🥲
Loved that part and ending of the game. I hope there will be Control 2, that would be awesome. Love this game and the action. :D
Bruh. You have just singlehandedly convinced me to play this game.
This part of the game blew my mind. The actions, visuals, and soundtrack was 10/10
The first time you truly feel god-like with your powers. What a masterpiece of a level, what an amazing game. Easily one of my top gaming moments of all time.
I LOVED this game so much. The DLC was amazing. It was a blast throwing stuff at people. This was easily one of the best moments that stuck out to me!
Whoever came up with the idea of ingratiating this song with the sequence deserves a raise.
Fucking great level man...Completely took me by surprise how awesome this was going to be
That was awesome is also the line Barry said after the concert stage fight.
I need a full length game of just this.
I like how we all agree that this is the best part of the game
I had surge and 102% blast radius mod unlocked for this mission. With a fully updated lunch tree. Constant explosion and lunched furniture made this a blast to play through. Pun intended.
Wow, really nailed the gameplay too, very nice.
Love you Remedy. This was awesome in Alan Wake and it's awesome in Control.
This is probably the closest we're gonna get to a modern Matrix game.
Just hit this point in the game. Total Old Gods of Asgard from Alan Wake vibes when the music kicked in. Hell yes.
But first...)
Excellent bunch of comments!
(Asymmetrical Suit FTW!)
Speaking of levels/sectors...I love brutalism and generally architecture and sometimes I just have fun with levitating for a good hour or two and take some pretty screenshots.
Alan wake 2 tá aí
It's funny. Ahti was singing and humming Finnish ballads, but playing in his ear was this epic metal tune.
Control for me was a 7/10 Game with a 12/10 segment. This was just incredible.
and a 10/10 gameplay
this bit of the game had me in its grip. it's far enough in the game that your abilities are evolved enough to enjoy the combat and the music complements the gameplay of this bit (the intro with the shifting walls, the slow part when you levitate down, the kickass fast paced parts in tune with the combat). Remedy has a habit of doing this. see the Alan Wake fight on the scene of the Old Gods of Asgard farm. awesome design.
Same band, so that helps.
This entire game was such a pleasant surprise to me, I loved it, but then this part was the best surprise within the surprise. Just a fantastic track, fun section, what a game.
I finished it last night and what a game. Story characters everything in this game is awesome.
This part was so cool, gave me some serious James Bond intro vibes
I watched this till the end just to see how the track ends. In my case I somehow exited the maze just in the right moment for the song to end. In this case the run was quick and the track couldn't finish but they made it fade and ended in the singer shouting "Control". I'm amazed by this attention to detail. The devs made sure that the song ended right on every situation.
You expect another annoying videogame maze level and then Remedy subverts your expectations delivering an amazing old school bonus level. Well done Remedy.
I just beat the game today. Wish I could back and play this part again. I really wasn’t expecting this to be the music in his Walkman
Never thought that crossing a boring maze would become so awesome because of the song.
I love the fact that the janitor was always listening to some tango and singing in some weird ass sweedish or some shit. And then sundely the metal kicks in and you are like "Hell yeah!!"
