  • I just had a discussion with a runner during a telemedicine second opinion.
She rolled her ankle and went to the emergency room. They gave her a brace to stabilize the ankle and an ACE wrap to compress it.
She started some rehab exercises, and frankly she improved a lot.
But when she got back to running, she had intermittent pain in the back of her ankle.
This was not the same spot where she got the sprain.
She called because this pain has now been going on for a long time, and when she got an x-ray someone told her she might have a posterior process fracture of the talus.
She asked me, "What exactly is a posterior process fracture?"
Today on the Doc On The Run Podcast we're talking about posterior process fractures of the talus.

Thanks for watching and for your comments. The exercises needed to solve the problem after a posterior process fracture and get back to activity will depend on when the injury happened, how bad it is, what you you feel as a consequence of the recovery as the fracture healed.

Thanks for watching and commenting. I am so sorry to hear about your fracture! Unfortunately, I cannot tell you how long you should I wait before walking, because I have not made you diagnosis, did not apply your cast, nor decide your cast should be removed. I am 5 months after surgery, broke my heel and talus. They talked like it would be maybe around 3 months recovery but I still can not walk. I have to wear my medical boot still to work and the pain is crazy. I don’t think there is any healing from this injury. I had the plate and screws plus cadaver bones put in and my foot is still swelled up like a balloon. 54 thousand dollar surgery.

I went to get an mri done and I came back with a non displaced fracture in the posterior process of the talus. How long is the recover time and what kind of treatment should I do ? I want to get back to playing soccer as soon as possible but I want to become fully healthy . I really hope I hear back from you , thank you

The length of the recovery time it will take to get back heal the posterior process fracture and get pack to activity will depend on when the injury happened, how bad it is, what you do now to let it heal and what you do to maintain your soccer-specific strength and fitness while the fracture heals.
What you should do is make sure you are not missing opportunities to make that happen right now!
