Your video is the best of many I have seen on the subject and was also more helpful than the few practitioners I have visited.. As they say, “Knowledge is power.” Much gratitude & respect..
A year last February I had a nasty fall landing on my left side in work. I went to A&E as my shoulder was very painful. It was soft tissue damage. Following morning when I woke up my hip was very painful. I had physio it got better. Alas I went for a walk up hill for 30 minutes in June and had an awful pain in my hip again. I had another appointment with the physio in July but a week before that I fell down the stairs and broke my ankle on the same side. 8 weeks with my leg elevated above my heart and an operation on my ankle! My ankle is fine now but still my hip still painful. I am seeing a physio, he gave me lots of exercises, it's finally getting better. I'm a nurse and cut my hours and not doing 12.5 hours anymore as my physio said this would aggravate my hip. Thanks for all this info!
Thank you for making these powerful videos. Whenever I sit too long , I have pain and discomfort around my hips shooting down my left leg. Whst is the treatment for this?
I understand so much better after watching this video. I will start changing some things. The first inyección didn't work. The second one did and I see now why. Thank you so much!!!
I definitely think I’m experiencing this right now. In the past I have had bursitis in the shoulder that has come and gone.. I do lean on one hip a lot and I think that possibly is the reason for mine flaring up and a possible recent injury that I may have neglected to see as an injury until now.
I just found this video, and I am excited about putting your recommendations into play. I had initially thought my issue could only be one problem, but from your video, I suspect my particular issue is more than one problem.
Thank you for the great explanation. My hip “specialist “ did not explain any of this and it was very helpful understanding where my pain is actually coming from and how to treat it. 👍
Thank you so much for your detailed information. I have been diagnosed with bursitis and have been given some very gentle exercises which I have for week 1,2, 3,and 4. I have taken your comments regarding stretching exercises on board and will definitely not do anything that may worsen my condition.

Thank you for such an amazing video. It really helps us at home identify where we stand when we are frustrated with pain. I found out with you that it is definitely my posture, always leaning on one side. I do this since I was little, but time is now making me pay for it. Thank you.
Fantastic help and i think at long last I may have a diagnosis for my incredibley painful left hip that seems to be fine first thing in the morning but more painful has the day goes on. Thank you

Thank you. I have had chronic hip bursa inflammation and pain. I've been put through physical therapy which made me do stretches, all causing me much more pain.
What a great bedside manner, so informative & clearly explained.. and a really great idea for an online physio practice. I realise "in hindsight" and confirmed by your video, that it was my 'well-intentioned' stretching (on 2 different occasions) that caused hip bursitis pain to go into absolute throbbing overdrive.. I get it now.. no more stretching until things settle down, and even then .. go easy. I also think if you stomach sleep with 1 leg 'up'.. all night long.. that could be another habit that would be contributing to this condition..
I had right hip replacement 2 yrs ago. Painful bursitis ever since. Been treated 3 times with anti inflams without much success, but will try and focus on preventing flare ups on your advice. Thank you for the informative video.
@@vivianeraw8448 Yes, it has taken a while, but with better understanding, I was able to strengthen some opposing muscles and hugely improve my hip pain.
@@vivianeraw8448 That was definitely the hardest part, was trying to sort out what activities or life movements made it worse, and trying to avoid them. It was frustrating for sure. I found laying on the floor with my feet and lower legs on the couch actually seemed to take pressure off, so I would do that alot. However, it seems everyone is slightly different with what helps and what aggravates. Hang in there. It does get better.
This is very helpful and you made it clear what is bursitis all about. In fact, you clearly explain the pros and cons of strengthening and also the best type of exercise you could look for. Moreover, you made it clear, how to understand your problem. Indeed, i am still suffering from this even though i do a lot of abduction and adduction exercise. I think strengthen exercise could get worse and the best is isometric exercise. That helps a lot though.
This video is so informative! Most informative video about hip bursitis on UA-cam! Thank you so much ❤ I wish you were in NSW for an inperson consult 😢
Thank you Maryke for mentioning impact and downhill running as possible causes! I misjudged downhill strides two weeks in a row, both with powerful impacts and my right hip bursa got inflammed. Oddly, not right away, but like a couple days later is when I noticed it. Following up with back-breaking lifting one weekend didn't help either. Anyway, I went 2 full months without running, but am now slowly coming back, but am noticing the bursa getting irritated after the run a little, but not too bad. We'll see.
thank you for the informative and useful video, I suffered this bursitis pain for 3 years, met the doctor so many times, but now I find it, I have taken a dose of Anti-inflammatory this week, it works very well, the pain disappeared, but I still find a long term solution to end it. Hope everything will be ok,
@@vivianeraw8448 I would say, Yes, I find out that drinking Tumeric with black pepper everyday can eliminate the pain from bursitis. I started from 2 years ago, and now I feel free from pain, I even play football again after 3 years.
This is terrific information. My rheumatologist poked on the side of my hips and said I have bursitis. She gave me some exercises to do. Not feeling better. Yikes. May need to head to a physical therapist.
Thank you for this, the most comprehensive and helpful video I have watched on hip bursitis, which I have in both hips, according to the NHS orthopaedic doctor I've been seeing in outpatients. He didn't offer any explanation or advice on treatment, except to refer me (reluctantly!) for a steroid injection... I'm still waiting for this several months later.
very detailed , i understood all you said and feel that someone is out there that understands my injury and can help eleviate my pain. Im grateful. thanks so much
After treatment for osteoarthritis for low back pain that has radiated into my calf and without much success, my doctor has now decided to try an injection for bursitis (as he's noticed on my hip x-ray). I've been really apprehensive about this since I had four spinal injections last year. I can still walk around the block, although just barely, but you've explained this far better than my doctor has. I often get the impression in the doctor's office that I'm being rushed. This video gives me the time I need to really understand all this. I appreciate this a great deal. Also, as far as exercise is concerned, I've been using a stationary bike each day for 1/2 an hour. I wonder if this is a good idea. I don't notice increased pain from it and since I have trouble standing for more than 15 minutes and/or walking for very long, this has been my only form of exercise. But I don't want to think I"m making this worse. Something to ask the doctor about I suppose. I just didn't consider this harmful before.
If an activity (like cycling) does not increase your pain during or after you do it, then it is usually OK to continue with it. Movement is important so don't cut it out if you feel it is OK for you but do check with your doctor as well.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio Oh thank you for this. The cycling doesn't increase my pain during or after but as the pain grows steadily worse over time, I'm just trying to pin down what the heck I'm doing that's involved here. I've switched from cycling to walking each day for between 15 minutes and half an hour. I just decided to experiment and see how this change will affect this pain. But thank you for your thoughts here. I love my stationary bike (it's a recumbent bike) and I think now that after a break from it I'll go back to it. My doctor is treating the pain with injections and medication. I want to get to a point where that's no longer needed. So far, so good. No medication lately; injections have stopped.
LOVE your videos..so helpful and practical..I have had 1 cortisone injection and it helped immediately..have been doing exercises but a few months in I am having a recurrence and now having knee pain too..going to focus on exercises for next few weeks and hope for improvement
I would love to see a video how my flat feet, almost nonexistent foot arch, might over the years have contributed to my physiological issues? I find when I wear shoes with too much arch support it hurts my feet. Two little arch support, is it causing my knees to want to come together more when I walk? Compressing all those hip and gluteal muscles? Thank you again for your truly informative videos.
Thank you Maryke, I really hope that you see this comment. I have watched so many of your videos in the last year since a metatarsal injury last year. In the last 3 weeks alone I have injured my shoulders with too many handstands over a 3 day period, 3 weeks ago I injured my right plantar fascia by overstretching climbing in my window because I couldn't use my arms to pull myself up. That plantar issue has lead to me leaning on my left side and walking/ trying to jog with a limp for 3 weeks in order to protect the right foot, (I have dogs so it's difficult to rest). My left bursa finally had enough of the 3 weeks of friction and abuse, I had a slight stumble against a wall on Wednesday after running 1km with a limp, no impact to that area but it's like it just exploded internally as I leant funny. So it is a little like sudden injury mixed with 3 weeks of repetitive strain on the bursa. I don't typically walk or lean into one leg, only for the plantar injury. I run regularly barefoot shoes with no issues. I'm on day 4 of the bursa injury and it is much worse than day one. Is ice of any use? I haven't iced because I see so much conflicting info. I have attended physio 2 weeks ago but this just happened. I'm at the stage something helpful aggravates another problem. It has spread to my lower back and some sciatica. Stretching only helps my back but completely flares the bursa. Thank you for that info in your video.
Using ice is absolutely fine - especially when you are in this much pain ua-cam.com/video/KgiVDyx1smI/v-deo.html I think you need to see a physio or doctor again for assessment of what actually happened because it sounds as if you could have torn something - it may just be the bursa but it could be a tear or actually a back injury if you have sciatica. Also consider using a walking stick or crutch if you have one to just take some of the weight off that leg for a few days - it can often make a big difference - but 2 sticks may actually be better to keep you straight rather than leaning over.
Dear Maryke, Thank you for this video. It was very informative. I wanted to know if tight hip flexors or hormones could contribute to bursitis. I have it in both hips and I have had no injury, so I'm trying to figure out how it happened. Thanks in advance !
Having it in both hips here too. This video actually helped me help myself bc I’m an RN but I haven’t practiced in a long time so thankful to have found this but now gotta figure exactly what’s triggering mine😣
@@LavenderRobot Yes, it seems that most of the Bursitis are due to injury, but still trying to figure mine out. I hope Maryke can shed some light on it for us!
Hormones can play a role - often in those cases it is actually in combination with gluteal tendinopathy then as well. Tight hip flexors are unlikely to affect it. But any other things that increase pressure there can cause it for example doing lots of house work or gardening when you're not used to it or walking +++ or standing while hanging on one hip etc.
I told my Doctor 2 days that I thought I had this and explained all the strengthening and stretches I was doing; she smiled and said I had diagnosed myself correctly 😅

Thank you so much!!🙏 Having seen this video I believe I can finally resolve my lateral hip issue. It has intermittently plagued me for years. Your video is the best of many I have seen on the subject and was also more helpful than the few practitioners I have visited.. As they say, “Knowledge is power.” Much gratitude & respect..
Wonderful!
Thank you for the excellent explanation and advice. Really comprehensive!
Thanks for watching and sharing!
Best of luck!
I definitely think I’m experiencing this right now. In the past I have had bursitis in the shoulder that has come and gone.. I do lean on one hip a lot and I think that possibly is the reason for mine flaring up and a possible recent injury that I may have neglected to see as an injury until now.
Very helpful comprehensive video on lateral hip pain
Glad it was helpful!
I just found this video, and I am excited about putting your recommendations into play. I had initially thought my issue could only be one problem, but from your video, I suspect my particular issue is more than one problem.
Good luck with your recovery!
More helpful than visiting my doc and PT combined! Amazing channel! ❤❤❤
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for the great explanation. My hip “specialist “ did not explain any of this and it was very helpful understanding where my pain is actually coming from and how to treat it. 👍
You are welcome!
Excellent explanations to navigate and assess the hip and low back issues. Thank you 🙏🏻 ❤
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for your detailed information. I have been diagnosed with bursitis and have been given some very gentle exercises which I have for week 1,2, 3,and 4. I have taken your comments regarding stretching exercises on board and will definitely not do anything that may worsen my condition.
Fantastic presentation! So informative and such a sensible approach to diagnosis, treatment, and management. Thank you! This was extremely helpful for me. It filled in all the gaps of important information that my physician did not tell me.
This was so helpful and detailed, thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful!
I'am glad l came across this video. Lots of useful information as lm dealing with this condition for a long time. l will have my scan injections this week and I'm glad to know that it is one of the best treatments for bursitis. Doctor thank you for this video. Good luck.

What an excellent explanation. Not sure if I have hip bursitis but will be gentle on myself.
Best video ever! Just was diagnosed today, thank you for this video. Your an angel!
Hey how r u now did u recover from bursitis
Thank you for such an amazing video. It really helps us at home identify where we stand when we are frustrated with pain. I found out with you that it is definitely my posture, always leaning on one side. I do this since I was little, but time is now making me pay for it. Thank you.
Teachers in high school were always telling us girls off for standing like that. I think we thought it made us look 'cool'.
Fantastic help and i think at long last I may have a diagnosis for my incredibley painful left hip that seems to be fine first thing in the morning but more painful has the day goes on. Thank you
You're welcome!
Outstanding video on hip bursitis. Excellent. Watch it all the way thru
Very informative, I am an active 80 Year old but hip bursitis stops me in my tracks and I can only walk very short distances. Been told I may need my bursa removed as I’ve had this condition for a long time and injections are no longer working, but thank you for this video.
Thanks for sharing!
One of the best if not the best video I have seen on Hip Bursitis ! The combo of experience and evidence based guidance is delivered honestly and practically ! Thank You for this Content
The most informative video out there. You are very professional and thorough. Thank you!
Thank you. I have had chronic hip bursa inflammation and pain. I've been put through physical therapy which made me do stretches, all causing me much more pain.
Hey how r u now
Hope you recovered
My hip started hurting mile 3, dull ache two day ago. I just foam rolled my IT band and it feels much better at the moment
Very thorough explanation with great guidance on how to identify, treat, and prevent this. Thank you!!

Just one question please, is it ok to massage the painful area with Arnica Oil?

Hey how r u now did u get better
@@vivianeraw8448 Yes, it has taken a while, but with better understanding, I was able to strengthen some opposing muscles and hugely improve my hip pain.
@@marilynmcleod4907 m glad your bursitis got away
M trying to take rest to Lower thé inflammation and thé friction of thé bursa
Good luck with your recovery!
This video is so informative! Most informative video about hip bursitis on UA-cam! Thank you so much ❤ I wish you were in NSW for an inperson consult 😢
Now I know why my shot isn’t working. We have up to 9 Burses not 1.You explain this the best on the internet. Thanks so much
Thank you Maryke for mentioning impact and downhill running as possible causes! We'll see.
This was very well explained.... one of the best videos on this topic...
Glad it was helpful!
Incredible quality of advice and explanation. Definitely subscribing to this channel, thank you.
thank you for the informative and useful video, I suffered this bursitis pain for 3 years, met the doctor so many times, but now I find it, I have taken a dose of Anti-inflammatory this week, it works very well, the pain disappeared, but I still find a long term solution to end it. Hope everything will be ok,
Hey how r u now did u recover from bursitis
@@vivianeraw8448 I would say, Yes, I find out that drinking Tumeric with black pepper everyday can eliminate the pain from bursitis. I started from 2 years ago, and now I feel free from pain, I even play football again after 3 years.
This is terrific information. My rheumatologist poked on the side of my hips and said I have bursitis. She gave me some exercises to do. Not feeling better. Yikes. May need to head to a physical therapist.
Nice information. May be suggest some treatments
Glad you found it helpful!
All your videos are excellent - easy to understand explanations that are very descriptive. Thanks.

Thank you for your Video. Amazing ! So well explained and helpful.
Soooooo good. I have been in so much pain, I’ve had a cortisone injection it seems to have helped . Your video just makes good sense thankyou

Hey
How r u now
Did u recover from bursitis !?
So helpful and practical. I have booked an online consultation. Thank you
Best wishes for your recovery! 🙂
Excellent presentation. Love the South African accent.
You are an excellent teacher and practitioner! I am so grateful to have discovered this video and your channel. Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Hey how r u now
Do u feel better !?
I have tried EVERYTHING YOU SUGGEST. STRETCHING SOMETIMES HELP IN GLUTES ACTUALLY, CORTISONE I EFFECTUAL.
LOVE your videos..so helpful and practical..I have had 1 cortisone injection and it helped immediately..have been doing exercises but a few months in I am having a recurrence and now having knee pain too..going to focus on exercises for next few weeks and hope for improvement
Thanks for sharing!!
Using ice is absolutely fine - especially when you are in this much pain ua-cam.com/video/KgiVDyx1smI/v-deo.html
I think you need to see a physio or doctor again for assessment of what actually happened because it sounds as if you could have torn something - it may just be the bursa but it could be a tear or actually a back injury if you have sciatica.
Also consider using a walking stick or crutch if you have one to just take some of the weight off that leg for a few days - it can often make a big difference - but 2 sticks may actually be better to keep you straight rather than leaning over.
Thanks a lot for detail and clear advice.
This video is saving lives. Thank u
