Thank you very much! Very useful video. I am a victim of navicular bone stress fracture, eight weeks out the plastic. I hoped I will run after a few weeks and was disappointed that rehab is taking so long and progress so slow. After this video situation is much more clear.
My doctor x-rayed my ankle and said it was not broken. 6 months later and I'm still in pain so I go and get an x-ray and another Dr. said in fact it IS broken! I should sue my first doctor.
Many small fractures only show up after time, once the healing and calcification begin. The specific angles the x-ray technician used when taking images may have not initially shown the fracture.
Thank you for this video. I broke my left navicular bone while playing volleyball in August 2021. It took me a while to get back to walking and playing, but now when I thought it was good, I amped up my exercises and I’m feeling the pain and soreness again. What would you advice me to do?
Reduce the load bearing exercise and work on really strengthening your foot and legs and then when you do go back to sport, you have to ease into it really slowly. It may also be wise to have your footwear checked. If you wanted more specific rehab advice and an exercise plan, this is also something that our team of physios can help you with via video call. Excellent video. You talk a lot more sense than many other videos on this subject. I have suspected navicular stress fractures in both feet from running too much. I'm awaiting MRI scans for confirmation but in the meantime I have Aircast boots. I wore the boots the whole time for the first couple of days but my skin became very itchy and I'm convinced the boots will cause major skin problems if I wear them all day for 2 months. Can I take the boots off in bed or when I'm at my desk, if I avoid putting any weight on the feet? Obviously it's impossible to eliminate all movement between the feet and lower legs if I do that.
Perhaps worth mentioning that it doesn't only arise for people who run and do sports. I simply tripped and fell, hitting my foot on the ground. Bruising and swelling were extensive but it only hurt for the first couple of days. X-rays showed the bone was chipped, so I've been advised by the clinic (NHS walk-in Minor Injuries Clinic) to use the boot when moving around for 4-6 weeks, though not when simply sitting or lying down (not sure if it's worth putting it on to walk a few feet inside the apartment). Using ice packs (frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel are fine) and elevation should also speed recovery, and a follow-up appointment will advise on physio.
Your case is actually a bit different - this video is about stress fractures which develop due to repetitive strain. Yours is an acute fracture that developed due to trauma and sounds like only an avulsion fracture (where a bit chips off). So the treatment in your case should be much more straight forward luckily! Good luck with your recovery.
Thanks for this helpful video Maryke! I went on an overnight hike 5 weeks ago and on my way back started to feel this pain, but had to finish another 2 hours to get to my car. Thought it had to do with my tendons and only went to physio after 3 1/2 weeks. He gave me some exercises to do, but a week later he said he thinks it's not my tendons but a stress fracture. Having a xray next week, although possibly won't see a thing. MRI too expensive. Anyway, I'm confused as he told me to continue with these exercises and mentioned he could give me a moonboot, but then didn't. Your advise is to immobilize and put no weight on the foot for 6-8 weeks. I won't be able to do that because I still need to go to work. I need to drive there and use my sore foot for driving, but it actually isn't super sore. When walking it starts hurting after about 10 minutes, sometimes hurts when I wake up. Is there a middle ground, e.g. wearing the boot on my days off (I only work 2 days a week). I doubt the doctor would give me 6-8weeks off work for this. I'm also wondering to go to a podiatrist and see if insoles could help as a friend of mine said it helped when she had a stress fracture. Will it never go away if I keep putting weight on it? I'm in New Zealand and the health system is not the best and surgery not an option. Thanks for any advice you may be able to give 🙏
Hi Nadine - getting the diagnosis right is very important because if it is just a tendon injury (and these can linger long) then putting it in a boot for 6 weeks is really not a good idea vs. if it is a stress fracture then that is what is needed. If MRI is too expensive, could you get an ultrasound? Ultrasound won't show the bone but it can show the tendons and it can help to see if your tendon is injured or not. I can't really give any specific treatment advice without having an in depth conversation about your symptoms and doing some tests as my advice may be totally wrong if I don't know all the details. Dear person that made this great informational video is mine a simulator problem? 3 days ago i woke up with slight pain in my foot the pain is increasing to the point today it was hard to walk but ever time it goes away. But comes back when i wake up again
That sounds more like a tendinopathy e.g. likely Tibialis posterior tendinopathy or something similar - it doesn't sound like a stress fracture - here's a playlist of videos we have on that: ua-cam.com/play/PLkRW4ITRa6bAQFz8Ll1O0YjqDPFXYbmeq.html
Thank you for the information. I am a 73 year old women with a fracture in my right navicular which showed up in an xray taken after I complained of pain in my foot in that area. Is it a standard treatment to wear a boot for three months? Can I bear wait on my foot while wearing the boot? I find the boot so uncomfortable.
Yes, because these fractures are so slow to heal it can take a long time in the boot. You will have to ask the doctor who is in charge of your care about weightbearing. Try to think of it this way - is it not worth sticking out the discomfort for 3 months if it then means it is healed vs. trying to walk on it now and then messing it up and then it takes more than 3 months? I know it is tough - good luck with your recovery x
I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the navicular bone after over a year of dealing with the pain doc said no weight bearing for 8 weeks but it hasn’t helped 😭 i just want to get back to normalcy
I had an accident at work and an MRI revealed I had a closed nondisplaced fracture of navicular bone. For some reason, MD put me in boot with non-weight bearing for 4 weeks, then prescribed physical therapy. After my first session, I could barely walk, the pain was crazy. Forgot to add my foot is partially numb. Please advise.

This is me, to a T! Rolled my ankle pretty badly on some stairs at my job. Couldn’t walk on it whatsoever. Dealt with it for a week until I went for X-rays w/ workers comp. Over time I could put weight on it, any kind of tilting or bending of my foot is pure agony. I’m in a boot, I have an appointment for an MRI coming up. The first doctor said “it seems like it’s your metatarsals”. So I started googling anatomy. And here I am. This is exactly what I’m dealing with. I’m definitely concerned about this..
Thank you for explaining perfectly my ankle symptoms that I suffered with for months. I knew nothing about the bones in my foot and have learned so much! There was no sudden injury, just a mild pain after tennis, then I supported my ankle with tight fitting boots thinking that would help (but evidently thanks to this website I discovered that I must have I prevented good circulation another reason it got worse) Shame I did not find the website and sooner! It was puffy, sore to touch and at times pain up my whole leg and around all my foot. I raised it regularly and iced it. I went to the doctor and because the symptoms were so vague I just got sent to a physio who also had no idea what had happened and gave me balancing exercises that obviously did not help and that’s why my usual yoga poses did not help me either. No mention of an x ray. I was hobbling and could not rest as it was a busy time at Christmas standing all day in the kitchen. I was taking Vit D but my diet probably was not right. Nothing improved until I went to a podiatrist 4 months after my initial pain and found this website! He mentioned a stress fracture and suggested I have tests for osteoarthritis. Fortunately I do not feel the need for surgery but feeling back to normal after changing to better footwear, orthotics and doing the right exercises. Looking forward to playing tennis again soon.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio I am in my 5th MONTH after shoveling using my foot to push and sometimes jarring the shovel once or twice. I knew I needed rest but continued to walk 10 hours/day for months due to necessity of work. Although I am telling the professionals how it happened I feel they are not diagnosing me properly. I have no insurance but need an ultrasound as the exercise I have been given to do feel like they make it worse, I am crying as I read the comments because actually, I have been trying everything including rest with very little walking and it still hurts. It sounds like maybe I just need to contact you to get some more clarity. I don't know what to do. And I am so frustrated and feel like I may never be able to walk again if I keep using it.
Also, I have had plantar fascitis and was diagnosed with chronic plantar fascitis in both feet and arthritis in ankle and big toe on the worst foot but I shovel tons and tons of dirt, sand, rock chips, clay, etc. for about 10 years now.
i had some pain occurring so i rested it for 2 weeks which did not help so then i got an x ray which showed nothing then waited 2 weeks again then got the mri which showed a big stress fracture

I run about 55 miles a week. I did a fast half mathron about 1 week ago. I ran 15 miles yesterday and I felt my foot barely just barely bothering me. Very little pain. I can pinpoint it right underneath the extra bone. I am very flat footed. If I focus on how I run it doesn’t hurt at all. Do you think this is a stress fracture?
Hi there i have this kinda accessory navicular bone from ankle sprain it grew and become larger since i got ankle sprain whenever i play football it hurts them the soreness and pain goes away after 4-5 days of rest then again if i play football it starts to hurt and inflammation occurs, what’s the solution or any exercises or how to permanently remove the soreness and inflammation? Appreciate your help.
This is not really something that I can provide any useful comments on because your case is pretty unique - best thing to do is to consult a physio who can assess your full situation and then provide advice.
Hi there, I was diagnosed with a navicular stress reaction and i was wondering if you could provide me with some information on the differences in treatment for a stress reaction versus a fracture? My doctor recommended that i rest without immobilization/non weight bearing for 6 weeks but its been 5 weeks and it seems marginally better but i don’t think i could return to lots of walking/hiking without pain anytime soon. Is it possible that the recovery time could also be up to 5 months for a stress reaction to this bone?
A stress reaction is what we call it before it forms an actual fracture. The recovery time is usually a bit quicker if you catch it in this stage although it also varies in severity. So, if you have quite a significant stress reaction then it can still take a few months - in my experience at least 12 weeks (3 months) but may be a bit longer
I think this is what I have. I've trained throughout winter. My body wasn't recovering well and I felt some arch pain. I decided it was time to take some rest. Took a couple weeks without running, few walks, but significantly reduced my activities. The foot pain continued but felt pretty minor. I'm on my feet most of the day at work. A few days ago I chose to do a proper mountain hike in hopes that I could start increasing activities and upping the heartrate this coming week. Came back from the hike unable to walk without a limp also noticed a lump near the ankle that I hadn't noticed before, is that a sign? The next day I got it checked out X-ray determined no fracture. Doctors said insurance wouldn't allow to have an MRI and X-Ray to be done within two weeks of each other. So they suspect a stress fracture and put me in a boot and I'm to go back in 2weeks. This sounds much more serious than what I thought and hoped. Hope your timeline is extra conservative if this is what is going on for me haha. Really just anxious for answers.
Oh man, good luck with your recovery. Make sure you eat a good healthy diet and stay away from cigarette smoke. Any chance you have access to an activity that doesn't load your foot too much e.g. swimming or cycling - it will help maintain your sanity while you wait for this to heal.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio Thank you so much! 😘I got a sports injury when I played basketball two years ago and it continues to hurt because of the Accessory Navicular bone and flat feet. Now I have to wait for surgery after conservative treatments. I got depression because of a long time of misdiagnosing and waiting for the time for appointments, and costly but not useful conservative treatments. Except for the pain, I feel my legs are always heavy. Is this also caused by this bone? Should I continue conservative treatments during the waiting time? Do you think breaststroke and indoor cycling (sitting, no weight) are also okay? 🤔
Thank you so much for this video. I’m almost certain this is what I have. I think i sustained the injury about a year ago playing tennis and suddenly jarring my foot when I stopped to change direction. It was acutely painful for 3 days, I got an X-ray and they said it wasn’t broken and sent me home. For a year now it’s been pain free in the morning but as the day progresses it gets worse and worse. I’ve seen a physio at my doctors surgery and I’m now going for another X-ray. If it turns out to be a navicular fracture, is it worth doing the conservative non-weight bearing treatment after a year or is it too late now? Can it still correct after all this time? Thank you
The treatment really depends on the type of fracture etc. Your doctor will be best placed to advise on this. Also, this video is about stress fractures - they are different from acute fractures. What you are describing (how it happened) sounds more like an acute fracture.
It may be that you bruised the bone inside - bone bruises can be very painful and take a long time to fully recovery so make sure that you don't yet do activities that make that pain significantly worse or it will take longer to fully settle down - continue your rehab in meantime and gentle sport.
Went for the conservative treatment about 12 years ago, but they never gave me any follow up stuff. I tried returning to running slowly. It took almost a year to get back to where I was before the injury...
Thanks, worth mentioning also, I was a young man at the time. And I also ran with this injury for about 2 months. I honestly didn’t know if I had a bone or a tendon issue, until they finally sent me out for an MRI.
Hi. I have this pain on the inside of my ankle, exactly where you showed it for a week now. I do run on a treadmill. During the day I feel fine just a little pain. The worst pain is at night and in the morning.. I can’t raise my leg at night or move it. In the morning I can’t walk, because the pain is just unbearable.. What should I do? Thank you..
hi! I'm squash player and currently I'm feeling the pain sensation when pressing it on that spot you shown in the video. The weirdest thing is I'm still able to move like normal. Just that there is no sign of swelling around the ankle. Could it be ATFL grade 1 tear as well?
Not likely - your ATFL is on the opposite side of the foot. The navicular is on the medial(inner part) bridge and the ATFL is on the lateral side just in front of the lateral maleolus.
My right ankle hurts on the top of my foot and the front of my ankle around where it eoyld hurt if it was fractured its Ben hurting a bit think I hurt it in basketball but it hurts alot right now
I don't feel pain along the top of my foot and theres no swelling. Mainly just pain when i walk on it or push down along the upper rear part of that tendon. I had pain in the area after a long run a week or so ago then it calmed down. After a shorter run it came back. I cant tell if its a fracture or fasciitus.
I feel sharp pain there after walking , it is little bit swelled too , it hurts while walking. I have started walking 2 km per day in the morning .. so I'm little confused .. is it because of walking or wrong footwear ? Help me out.

Yes lemme tell you the wrong footwear will cause it. I have flat feet (more severe in my right) and I was on my feet in 4 inches heels for a photo shoot and the next day my navicular bone started to became tender and was really bad. Turns out heels or flat shoes that provide no support; will injure the navicular bone esp for ppl with flat feet
I’m 16 years of age and suffering with foot pain. I was running around a week ago and towards the end of my run my foot started aching but nothing too crazy. That evening, i was struggling to walk with the pain and the day after the pain completely prohibited me from walking. The pain is mostly at the top of my foot around my metatarsal’s but also on the side of my foot. For the first three days there was swelling but now that’s gone. It dosent hurt when i’m pressing down on it and my x ray came back fine. I’ve been in a bandage for four days and the pain has lessoned but i’m still limping and it is still quite sore when i go on my tiptoes. What do you think i should do?

@SportsInjuryPhysio Hello and have a nice day, my navicular bone was broken 33 days ago and they put a cast on my foot, but my pain never went away. Why could this be? And how many days does it take for a navicular bone fracture to heal? "Result of my radiology report" Here is the translation of the text into English: "A faintly displaced fracture line was observed in the dorsal aspect of the navicular bone. Edematous appearance was noted in the skin and subcutaneous tissues around the ankle at the distal end of the tibia. The densities and cortical continuities of the tarsal and metatarsal bones within the examination area are normal."
I am in a massive pain now and am very confuse because I also have gout, and this kind like gout attack where it starts slowly with sore on day 1, and slowly growing pain now is day 5 and I am not even able to step on my right foot. This pain started after I had a bad feeling on my back in the gym, I don't know if this back-pain is related to it. Now could this possibly just a arthritis instead of stress fracture.
This does not sound like a stress fracture. Get your doctor to first check if it is your gout because that can cause pain in this area as well. There are several other conditions that also cause pain here so get it assessed by a physio or doctor if it turns out not to be gout.
One week ago, I went cross country hiking , over two days I walked nearly 30 miles, one of those days I had a little stumble, I had no pain, but three days after hike I’ve been getting pain on inner side of arch, I can not walk without limping, I’m on my feet all day at work, I have tried putting on a support bandage but this has not helped, I also have collapsed arches, could this pain be due to strain, or possible stress fracture, any diagnosis is helpful.
My navicular bone get twisted past 6 years and it's swelled it doesn't go inside but adter 4 day's I'm able to play but in that 4 days i just can't walk.....???
Hello! I have a question, so I think it’s been almost a month ever since I’ve been dealing with this pain, and I ran on it so much it was hard to walk and I would limp so then I rested for a little bit but then once I started running, it would start slowly progressively get worse in pain, so I’m done with track now and I went to the doctor and they said it was an overuse injury, and my foot was inflamed and a little swollen and I did get an x ray and they said they didn’t see anything, but I’m doing summer running for college and I took two weeks off and then I started running today again and that area in particular hurts, and I started icing this foot and I don’t know the stretches that would help but I’ve been doing stretches, but my foot would ache if putting a little pressure on it, and I’m just confused and also more for me it hurts on the top of the foot and I pressed on the part and it hurt, but the doctor said they didn’t see anything in the scans, so I’m confused
Xrays don't show stress fractures - you can only see them on MRI scans. And they often don't show on scans. Resting for 2 weeks is not enough - you have to be pain free walking and able to do loading exercises without pain and then slowly ease into running after. If you wanted help with figuring it out, this is something that our team of physios can assess and help you with via video call. hi I'm 14 year old boy and I have and problem the thing is that I have a small ball like bone near my ankle I don't what is it but it's bigger than my right foot it don't really hurt when I run but when I press that ball like bone hard it kinda hurts can you tell any prevention and treatment for it and how long I will take to heal 😃
I’m 14 years old and I think I may have a stress fracture because on the top part of my foot. Its really painful when I try to stretch out my ankle and when I stretch out my big toe it gets worse. It gets worse after I get off of work and lay down. Its superrrrrr painful when I press down on the upper part of my foot towards my ankle . It’s also very painful when I try to go to sleep and makes me very uncomfortable and makes it hard to sleep. Would you suggest that I go get it checked out and would it probably be a stress fracture?
Hi Jason, it is definitely a good idea to have it checked out so that you can know for certain. It may not be a stress fracture - it could just be a tendonitis in the the tendons that run over the top of the foot.
Yes, the whole idea of performing surgery for navicular stress fractures is to allow the person to get back to running and sport, but you have to complete a comprehensive rehab programme first.
My god. I have had this injury since 2011. Had surgery in 2019 and two screws put in. It was 3/4th of the way broken. The fractureline was so calcified and hard so the whole screwdriver overheated and scarred me. The surgery didn’t help. They should have done a bone graft in addition in my opinion. I can manage with it I cannot run painfree. I don’t wish this on anyone. My quality of life has gone from 10 to a 3.
I should add that diagnosing this is extremely hard. I have been to over 10 different specialists and in 4 different countries. No-one picket it up from an Xray nor an MRI. They eventually found it through a gamma scan. I also don’t know why a CT scan wasn’t done in the early stages, that would have revieled it also.
@@lo9273 I know the pain and I just start to use motivation, and stress apps to help me manage the mental consequences. I hope you will feel better soon! Btw, which countries and cities did you go? I also got a misdiagnosis before and am waiting for a survey.

Thanks for the information I had a foot injury a while ago and I learned i fractured navicular bone after i’ve been playing on it for months and kept hurting it. the dimoctor said it was a permanent injury and When i’m playing sports I have a foot restriction on how i move my foot. I was wondering if any exercises i could do to help strengthen it to. Also are there any foot braces that specifically help with the navicular bone while i’m playing basketball?
You will benefit a lot more from having your foot assessed by a physio and getting tailored advice - because you have a restriction generic advice will likely not be right for you.

Superb elaboration very helpful 🙌
Glad it was helpful!
I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis of the navicular bone after over a year of dealing with the pain doc said no weight bearing for 8 weeks but it hasn’t helped 😭 i just want to get back to normalcy

Will CT scan help in diagnosis of navicular stress fracture?
Yes, they can be used to diagnose stress fractures.

Glad to hear the video was helpful. Good luck with your recovery!
Did you wear a cast too ?
Superb video.
Glad you liked it
My God. I have this for years
I can’t figure out when or how I did it!
i had some pain occurring so i rested it for 2 weeks which did not help so then i got an x ray which showed nothing then waited 2 weeks again then got the mri which showed a big stress fracture
Mam i had small fracture in my left leg below ankle . Is fracture only solution

Sounds more like your Tibialis Posterior tendon that is struggling.
Hi have you found a treatment for this? I have the same thing right now
Hi there,
I was diagnosed with a navicular stress reaction and i was wondering if you could provide me with some information on the differences in treatment for a stress reaction versus a fracture?
Is this with or without a boot/cast and crutches?
@@SportsInjuryPhysio thank you!
i twisted my ankle/ high ankle almost foot sprain and it healed but the bone on the inside still hurts when i try to run or move fast is that’s normal
Thank you for sharing x
Thanks, worth mentioning also, I was a young man at the time. And I also ran with this injury for about 2 months. I honestly didn’t know if I had a bone or a tendon issue, until they finally sent me out for an MRI.
Hi. I have this pain on the inside of my ankle, exactly where you showed it for a week now. I do run on a treadmill. During the day I feel fine just a little pain. The worst pain is at night and in the morning.. I can’t raise my leg at night or move it. In the morning I can’t walk, because the pain is just unbearable.. What should I do? Thank you..
Get it assessed and diagnosed properly - what you should do depends on the diagnosis and there are many conditions that can cause pain in that area.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio yes that hurts on me too.
It can also be tibialis posterior tendonitis - A physio or podiatrist should be able to diagnose it for you.
I have done surgery I feel little pain now also how much time it take to remove pain ??
There are many factors that affect pain, so we can’t really answer that.
Hi! how's your pain now?
Can you help please tell, if its surgery help for you ? What they did on surgery ? I have same situation but scary surgery

Hello and have a nice day, my navicular bone was broken 33 days ago and they put a cast on my foot, but my pain never went away. Why could this be? And how many days does it take for a navicular bone fracture to heal?
"Result of my radiology report"
Here is the translation of the text into English:
"A faintly displaced fracture line was observed in the dorsal aspect of the navicular bone. Edematous appearance was noted in the skin and subcutaneous tissues around the ankle at the distal end of the tibia. The densities and cortical continuities of the tarsal and metatarsal bones within the examination area are normal."
You need to speak to your doctor if you're having pain in your cast.
I've had this for 2 years and also got osgood schlatter with it
It still hurts You the navicular?

You'll get the best answer if you go to someone during those days when it is injured and have it assessed.

Hi there,
We cannot answer these questions without having done a proper assessment.
@@SportsInjuryPhysio Idk but I have this too.
I've had this symptoms going 2 years now, I'm definitely heading to a doctor asap
After navicular surgery can I back to running?
Thank you for sharing your experience.
