As a lifelong friend of Jeffrey Gaines we met in Junior High and graduated together. A nicer person you'll never meet. I'm honored to call him my friend.

I got the "Jeffery Gaines" record when it came out in '92. Somebody was spinning this track on the radio in New Orleans back in the day. I went straight to the record store and bought it. One of the best records EVER. Cheers!

Yes this song got my gut when I was 19 freshman at the university of Liege in Belgium... so fucking lost in my emotional misery full of anger in face of my toxic family I hated so much my condition that I would do all I could to get out... And then suddenly I started to sing: “there’s got to be a hero in me!” and found new feelings in me, I put words on it and became hopeful of a crazy future of mine... and you know what? I heard “Hero in me” on the radio back in ‘92 and immediately had to buy the single. The words haunted me, felt like a very personal warning.

I've always loved this song! We met about 20 years ago at the State Theatre in Easton, Pennsylvania when you opened for Tesla during the Bearman & Keith's 1000th show anniversary. Much respect, Jeffrey. Your music has always inspired me and many others! Thank you!
I went to see Melissa Ethridge so many years ago and he backed her up. He put on a great show and I had to buy his cd. this is one of the best songs on the cd. The songwriting is amazing. this is my favorite song by him.
I had the exact same experience. He opened for ME and I was buying his CD the next day.

Blew me away years ago and still has today.

This is one of my Spirit Songs. Meaning, if you could turn my Spirit into a CD (or whatever passes for a CD in 2024) then this would be one of the songs that would play. Such a well put together song in every phase, from the music to the lyrics. It just hits on so many levels. A very rare phenomenon.
The first time I heard of him was when he did a cover of "In Your Eyes". He did a wonderful job...I downloaded it. Beautiful voice
One of those artists who many people never heard of. If it wasn't for a radio interview on KLOS some years ago I never would have know this artist. Now I frequently listen to this entire CD some years later. Thank you Jeffery.

A wonderful video of a wonderful song by a wonderful musician... I've been listening to Jeffrey Gaines for over 20 years now and pretty much all of his music moves me. I've been fortunate to meet him in person as well as photograph him during two of his performances, and I never grow tired of his music...

This album was the soundtrack to my life in 1992. The line in hero in me “I put a limited on my self potential and my possibilities” is incredible! I still feel this way at times! The whole album is incredible. As a song writer myself, I can say Jeffrey Gaines is incredible! He was definitely an inspiration to me! I’m saddened that he didn’t reach the levels of success of Kravitz, Prince, etc, etc. He really should have. Jeffrey, I appreciate you bro!

A forgotten masterpiece that was way before it’s time my opinion!
20 years ago I was working in layaway in a Hill's department store and this song would play through the store and I always loved it and never knew who it was. Its been playing in my mind for all this time and now I finally found it!!!!
I found this record when it first came out back in 92, and played it endlessly. Just goes to show not everyone with the talent he has breaks through into the mainstream. He toured with Melissa Ethridge and as far as I know is still doing solo gigs. His second album "somewhat slightly dazed" is really good too. I think you can still find it out there in internet land. He is in a class by himself.

I have met Jeffrey about 20 times and talked with him a few times. He is an extraordinary singer/ songwriter. This song brought me to tears, and gave me perspective. I have the word "Persevere" in my bedroom, and Jeffrey's words "There's got to be some hero in me" also in a place I can see. Definitely one of the most beautiful songs, I have ever heard, in 68 years!
So where did you meet him so many times?
Many times in Philly, Sellersville Theatre, In Phoenixville, Jersey, even a small place in Jenkintown(On West Street). Multiple times. He usually comes out and will talk to people.

I'm devestated..this song Hero in Me..I wish I had heard it I needed all the encouragement I could get I had so many haters that I just left off and gave up..you just wouldn't believe what people will put you through the closer I got to the top the more vicious my haters became.. I fell in love with this song in a dusty corner of a San Diego record store in '92. Almost running, I asked the clerk who this was singing and was floored to find out he was a Black man! I'd always felt so different and was closeted in those days.
I know almost 30 years later and the way the world has changed, that seems nuts. But not then. Hip hop had been (and still is) my oxygen. I bought that CD immediately and played it for years. Jeffrey, thank you for giving me that little moment of pride and dignity. This song has helped me through coming out, being brave, through the death of my partner years ago. Surviving that. Man, just thank you.

whenever i need some emotional solace or comfort, i listen to Headmasters of Mine & this particular song. so many different feelings wrapped up here. i wish rebecca and myself were still friends. JG performed at our alma mater in po town. darkness clouds while emptiness runs away.

This song was my intro to JG. Clever and well done but common for good song smiths. However, the song that haunts me was always Headmasters of Mine. A swirling contradiction of thanks and understanding with calling out them not understanding. Lyrically and in mood, I think it's his masterpiece.
