It's vital for people to understand that the deadlift is a pushing leg exercise, not a pulling back exercise. Not at all to say it doesn't work the back, but if you treat it like a pull, you will hurt your low back. Treat it like a standing leg press, and stick your rear out. That helped fixed my deadlift. Ironically, focusing on that, and not keeping my back flat, actually helped keep my back flatter and kept it from bending on heavier weights.
It's still a hip dominant move unlike the leg press which is knee dominant. It's a pull for the simple fact your arms being attached to the bar, otherwise it's a hip thrust.
@@ericcarson342 your arms do almost no mechanical work on the deadlift. Yes, it's more like a hip thrust than a leg press, but in terms of the mechanics, it's absolutely a push (which the hip thrust and leg press both are).
The problem is that you can't do this pushing motion with the legs with light weights. Your back comes in too easily. So beginners starting with low weight always learn wrong.
Yes 100% and did you see how consistant her reps where. I normally whatch all videos on 2x speed and that makes most wiggles and sways more obvious but she looked like a robot (in a good way). Check 5:15 at 2x speed, uncanny.
yes this is awesome. it kind of goes across most sports. i’m a not great at golfing but i do golf a lot and i actually enjoy watching women’s golf more because everything is so smooth and technical. the men are better athletes (i don’t mean this negatively towards women) so they do a lot more stuff in their swings. same with women’s basketball, i actually don’t like watching that but if you wanna learn technical and the right way to play, they can’t play above the rim so it’s good for young kids to watch the basics from professional women
Agree on all of the above. When I used to play a lot of tennis and I wanted to work on ground strokes and consistency, I would play a good female. I went to a college that was loaded with a lot of good tennis players. It was fun being able to go all out in tennis against a young lady.
this is so great! love how she breaks everything down especially the breath work. also talks about everyone's form being different which is straight facts. gotta appreciate her non-cookie cutter bs that a lot of other fitness coaches claim
Wow. Awesome instruction. I've lifted off and on my whole life. At 67 AND after 3 hip replacements I'm finally getting into dead lifts to recover my butt, lol. After a few months, I can say they work. Best, Steve
Just wanted to come back here to say you absolutely saved my back. I was having serious back pain with deadlifts but after watching your video I tried yesterday and zero pain afterwards. Just woke up feeling great. The one tip I took from it that changed everything is to approach DL like a push (legs) movement not pulling (arms). Thank you ❤
You have a way of explaining that just makes sense. You aren’t flexing or posing as you talk to try and look huge and bitchen, you are just mellow. Thanks for helping the you tube community get healthier... stay awesome.
This is one of the best videos on deadlifts. Clarity in explanation, proper demos and awesome camera work. She reminds me of Rachel Weisz (the mummy movie actress)

iv watched a lot of Deadlit how to guides when i first started and now creating a playlist for a friend this i think is hands down the best deadlift guide i have ever seen
Deadlifts are just a great compound lift. I’m 65 and discovered them later in life. I thought they were just for meat head lifters. Boy was I wrong! I have Multiple Myeloma, which can make you prone to spinal compression fractures. I use a trap bar to minimize awkward loading on the spine, keep the weight at 185 lbs. or less and focus on doing AMRAPs. Just doing a lot of reps at 135 feels like a HIIT workout! Heart rate goes through the roof!
Thank you started deadlifts today felt kinda discouraged as people stare . I’m trying to build my core and I wanted to make sure I’m not waking up tomorrow with back pain. Thank you 🙏
I like your videos very much! I learned a lot from it. Better posture on my exercises and better muscels, too! Especialy deadlift. It can go wrong easy. But with your vid is it going well! Keep it up and keep posting! 💪🏼
Big, huge fan of your tiktok and so glad you're here too! Just wanted to share, I ruined my feet doing deadlifts etc barefoot. Gave myself plantar fasciitis and had to take 3 months off which was the worst. Saw a podiatrist and physio and they both said the same and that it's becoming more common
I just found you Kelly - I love your straightforward no bull explanations. I subscribed to your channel. Just one suggestion - your black top blends with the background, making it a bit difficult for my older eyes to see what you're doing. Any other colour would help me see you ;) 🙏
I was thinking of whether strong developed abs could "replace" the belt for beginners? So it may make sense to pay some attention on the abs training as well too for stronger proper deadlifts?
Opinions on lifting barefoot: does that make your feet stronger? Id think so because your shoes normally keep the foot steady, not sure how to explain that better..
A key for me is like she says, “a big breath, brace through your body.” The exercise is a pull with driving your legs into the floor. Think falling backwards pulling while your legs push as hard as they can and your spine is as straight and as braced as you can. Do low reps 3-5 sets of 1-5 reps.
Wow great! My only question is what makes us figuring out the high of our hips in our starting position?I struggle to find the sweet spot and wondering if i do my deadlift "squatty" too much. How can i know if my hips are too low or to high at the beginning of the deadlift?
Sumo deadlift makes it harder for me to lift as much weight- i do more on a conventional deadlift. It all depends on how you are built and where your leg strength is. There is more quad and glute work being done in a sumo deadlift. My back is much stronger and my hamstrings & abductors so that’s why I think this set up is tough but I want to try Sumo more still.
Love your content!! Can you please help me finding out which deadlift is best for me? I am a short person(162cm) with long torso, but I also have long femur bones but the rest of my legs (from the knee to the ankle) is short?
I'm 64 and I can do 10 reps of 100 kg (220 lbs). However last week while attempting 90 kg, a lower back muscle contracted involuntarily causing pain. That muscle is still inflamed and sore😢
Another question if I may, is it a good idea to gradually increase the weight while at the same time reducing the reps?, so instead of 50 reps at 60kg possibly work down to 25 reps at 120kgs?, this will be over a period of about 9 to 12 months of course!!,
I'm a 44 year old man. Not a pervert. I just enjoy art and exercise. I don't do deadlifting now, because I'll do my back in. What can I do, that won't hurt my lower back?

The thing I have noticed and appreciate about most female trainers is that they focus on the fundamentals and not the weight. ✌🏾✌🏾
The women are also more relatable, strength-wise. The huge ripped fitness dudes are on another planet. One us natty guys will never visit! 😂

All that hand waiving that Kelly likes to do, as though she's signing, is not just poor etiquette, it's not helping her explain things better😅💈🙏
“Push the floor away” that’s a game changer for me! This is the best deadlift tutorial on UA-cam. Thank you, Kelly 🙌🏽

i think this is the best deadlift tutorial on YT. showing how to brace every rep is amazing!

needed this! I attended a deadlift party and was able to do 47 consistently and paid for it over the next 4 days with Lower back pain
Are deadlift parties a thing? 😂
More great content Kelly. Must admit I tried deadlifts once and really hurt my lower back, so I’ve stayed away since then…
Extremely helpful! Thank you so much for this tutorial. 👍
Excellent explanation... I appreciate how you brake down each point....getting me some straps!.❤
brake down🤨

Excellent tutorial Kelly. Thanks ❤
One of the best explanation I ever seen so far.. thank you ❤
Best deadlift intro video I've seen! Thank you! ❤ You get right to the point without droning on about something or other.

Thanks for the knowledge....lookin strong, Kelly! 😉 This is the best deadlift tutorial i have been able to find. Very thorough.
Also engaging your lats is very imp. You are unknowingly doing it but didn't mention it.
Love this video. Has helped me a lot when I deadlift.
This has been really helpful . Thankyou

That’s not from deadlifting wtf 😂
Thanks Kelly, that was very informative, I will be doing body building soon and have taken your advise.
Super helpful, one thing on the shoes, I personally use lifting shoes with lifted heels because of my poor flexibility and long legs.
Great advice...awesome form!!

Wouldn't it be beneficial to hold the intra abdominal pressure on the way down as well? Then you can go slow and increase time under stress.
Yup. Easy trick missed

Treat it as a push. I treated a 270lb trap bar dead as a pull and was out of action for six months from a bulging disc and strained lower back.

How many times a week should one do deadlift. I have been doing twice a week for last six months and I do around 160 pounds max..
I love your videos I aspire to be a goated trainer like you one day❤️
I would add taking the slack out of your arms as a step before deadlifting, too.
Edit: She did end up touching on this towards the end, great job!

Above all else, heavy deadlifts are first a leg press, or the risk of back injury is greater.
