    I'm on a tone hunt for the best Humbuckers to swap into this Gibson SG Standard '61 Reissue. Follow along with me as I talk about the mods I have done so far to the guitar, and see if you dig the Seymour Duncan Antiquities more than the stock Gibson Burstbuckers that I showcased in the original video, which you can find here: • Gibson SG Humbucker Hu...
    Background:
    I picked up this Gibson SG Standard '61 Reissue a few months back and I've been getting to know it, and adjusting it for the feel I want.
    I have set it up both both slide and standard tuning / action, and I have found that the Gibson Burstbuckers are pretty great, especially with some heat cooking with your amp - so today we are gonna be looking at the tones you can get from those stock pickups.
    Unfortunately, I did find that the guitar's tuning stability was quite lacking, so I replaced the tuners with @StewMac Locking Kluson Tuners which helped but didn't get me all the way there, so I am going to get the nut replaced with a @StewMac Bone nut, looking to learn to do that on the job! Maybe I will share a video... we'll see.
    I also replaced all the wiring with an @Emerson Custom SG Wiring Kit, and added an Emerson Custom Treble Bleed to both volume knobs to preserve my top end when turning volume down.
    Finally, I replaced the stock stop tail/saddle/bridge with a Callaham stainless steel kit.
    In the future, I am going to be dropping in some Fralin Pickups and Lollar Pickups, as well as Sonic Pickups to compare with this video! I am pretty stoked on comparing the results, and seeing if a new nut helps the tone and tuning stability as well!
    Thanks for checking it out!

    Sounds great! Im heavily leaning towards trying these. I really wanted to buy the Fralin Pure PAFs, but im feeling too impatient to wait the build time. 😂🤣 i think i would be more than happy with the Antiquities though.

    To me, the Antiquities sound a lot more open and clear than the stock burstbuckers. There’s an acoustic quality to them that the stock pickups just don’t provide. I guess I liked the Antiquity pickups. Instead of treble bleeds you should try 50’s wiring in your guitar. It also retains the high end when you roll off the volume pots and the interaction between volume and tone pots is really special (I can’t say if it is better or worse, but I really like it in my SG). Keep the pickup videos coming. I’m really curious about the ones you chose ;-)

      Hey thanks! Appreciate you checking out the video and commenting! I actually have the Emerson SG Wiring Kit which is 50s wiring, check it out:
      emersoncustom.com/products/sg-prewired-kit
      I did all these improvements one by one to hear the difference, and the Wiring Kit made a huge difference but I wanted EVEN MORE high end preserved when I dropped the volume controls for each pickup, the treble bleeds totally accomplish it. I just played it for like 5 hours tonight cleaning up a pushed amp and holy crap it’s great. A few more videos and you’ll know what I settled on for pickups… stay tuned!
      Be sure to follow on Instagram and say hi in the DMs! Would love to hear your SG if you have any clips.

      @Edge of Breakup we spoke last week on Instagram :-) I shared some stuff (the guy with the Derek Trucks SG; I still have the stock 57 Classic pickups in it but I’m GASing for a pickup swap...)

    They sound killer. There is a reason Duncan has been doing it for ages. The pickups are just that damn good

      Def had the pushed and the driven tones going for them, less convinced on the cleans but def not bad at all.

      Great soulful playing! I thought the clean tones from these antiquities sounded amazing! Everything an old PAF should sound like. Very warm, sweet, with nice highs! Overdriven very smooth! I’m definitely sold! Have you tried Seth Lovers in the SG?

    Appreciate these video's. I've had tons of pickups through the year's and have quite the collection but humbuckers are very different. Maybe i just dont love them but I'm still trying. I've been pleased with antiquities way over any gibson pickup. Lollar is the only one I'm looking at I've never owned.

    have you compared these to Jim Wagners Crossroads pickups? nice job. is this a custom shop SG or the USA version?

    • @EdgeofBreakup
      @EdgeofBreakup  2 роки тому

      Nope, I’ve never heard of them actually. Have you played them? I appreciate the kind words. This is the USA 2021 Gibson SG Standard that Sweetwater sells. Be sure to check out my other videos showing the Freland pure PAF’s, the Lollar El Rayos and Low Wind Imperials, and of course the stock Burstbuckers. I got a pair of Seymour Duncan Phat Cat pickups and the bridge is stupidly bright. Trying to figure out if this bridge is really bright or if it sounds good??

    • @EdgeofBreakup
      @EdgeofBreakup  2 роки тому +1

      Haha - I feel you. Humbucker bridges are not something that I prefer to play clean as a whistle, but I wanted to show you that sound so that viewers could make that judgement for themselves. When playing SGs, I prefer to use the amp broken up / pushed, and then use the guitar volume to clean it up - I find that this gives you a much different “clean” than just playing clean. This is the reason I treble bleed mod them, keep that high end sparkle when I turn down.
      The other question you have to ask yourself is: are you EQing your amp for the neck or the bridge? If you set the EQ for the bridge, does the neck get too dark? Vice versa? Humbuckers that I’m looking for need that balanced quality, I’m not sure that the Antiquities got all the way there. But I liked the pushed and driven sounds pretty well.

  • @SolidSmashies
    @SolidSmashies 2 роки тому +2

    There seems to be a softer attack on these p'ups across the board (pushed or clean; bridge middle and neck) than the Fralin Pure PAFs and especially the Lollar El Rayos you've demo'd. That's not a bad thing at all if that's what one is after!
    Great playing, as always!
    Have you done a lot of humbucker swaps with your 335?

    • @EdgeofBreakup
      @EdgeofBreakup  2 роки тому

      Very high quality across all the models I tried! Thank you! At this point I would give the El Rayos the edge because of the perfect clarity on the top end and the sinewy bass response. Truly the perfect humbucker for single coil lovers like me!
      Great question on the 335 - I wish I had a 335 that I was comfortable doing that with. This particular 335 is an original vintage 1967, so it will remain untouched when it comes to mods! Maybe someday I can get a cheaper model from Gibson and explore, I have to believe that the different body style and composition/amount of air makes it a totally different ballgame when swapping pick ups versus the SG! Aka what works for one may not work for the other!

    I picked up a 2010 silverburst SG and I'm not happy with the stock burstbucker bridge pickup (lacks balls, seems tinny). What's your recommendation if I want to switch it out? I play mainly hard rock (seldom go clean). Cheers

    • @EdgeofBreakup
      @EdgeofBreakup  Рік тому

      In an SG I personally like the Lollar El Rayos, but I’m trying to achieve great tone from clean to dirty or neck to bridge and any combo therein. I have to say that they are killer with gain, here’s some videos:

      BTW, one of my nicer guitars is an Epiphone, the one that came with 57s, I switched them to Antiquities. That guitar is incredible, sounds great, stays in tune. Really nice. I have Gibsons too but that Epi sounds maybe even better with those Antiquities@@EdgeofBreakup

    any bridge components or metal components should be aluminum or brass and any steel or stainless steel should be avoided because it kills sustain and resonance..

    • @vincenthanko1340
      @vincenthanko1340 Рік тому

      and with aluminum or brass you might get more "bell tones" or emphasize your clean tones for more clarity.

      It depends really. I have a really nice SG standard 2017 made of the nicest, lightest,resonant mahogany ever and it's totally stock Gibson hardware kicks ass ! Now if you have a heavy les paul then yes the light weight wrap tail piece will help for sure. I did that and was amazed at how the tone opened up !
