Lollar Imperials played next too Seymour Duncan Antiquity set.
Imperial set: Alnico 2 / 7.6k neck and Alnico 5 / 8.4k bridge
Antiquity set: Alnico 2 - 7.7k neck and 8.6 bridge
Lick 1 - full guitar volume
Lick 2 - guitar volume 4
Lick 3 - guitar volume 7
lick 4 - full guitar volume
Played the same licks as close as possible. Pickups loaded into the same guitar, with the same amp on the same exact settings. 1 close mic only. Reverb from logic.
The height of the pickups is relative the same. The pole screws were adjusted to taste.
RS Guitarworks electronics in my guitar. EQcable cables being used.
Really useful side by side comparison - very nicely done, best I've seen. 👍
Based on that I'm swapping out the Imperials for Antiquities on my Eastman SB59/v. Thanks, I've been thinking about that for ages.
I was a Lindy Fralin pick up fan for years until I discovered Lollar Imperial humbuckers. I did a complete change out on my Epiphone 335 Dot. Made in Korea.
I changed out all the guts and replaced the tone caps with Sprague Vitamin Q's and CTS audio taper pots with a custom-made wiring harness that I snagged off eBay for $75 including the caps. All in the pickups cost $300, $75 caps, pots and wiring harness. $50 for the labor which we all know is a steal.
The results are stunning! That guitar seriously came to life with the Lollars just blowing my mind with the warm tone, the bite and sustain. And the clean tones make you want to never stop playing!
I've had both a Gibson ES-335's, and a ES-339 and my beautiful black Epi is equally as good as either of those guitars! Considering I'm into this project like $625 including the $200 for the 🎸 what more can I say!!
Cool!
I thought I'd like the Lollars more, but I really like the woody timbre of the Duncans. Looks like my LP Studio will be getting a set from Seymour. (I've got Antiquities in my Jazzmaster and they're perfection.)
Nothing wrong with that. Hope you subscribe. I have a ton of these!
Absolutely agree in a solid body like the LP the Lollars are really nice and work best. In a Semi (such as the Eastman T59 that I have - with a Maple neck) the Antiquities are excellent. It may be very much guitar and tonewood dependent, but Maggie's point about the woody sound of the Antiquities is well made. I feel Antiquities are more faithful to the 50s sound, and are therefore appropriate to a 335 /345 type of guitar.
@@rayharris8113 I too have a T59v and the Antiquities are a great match. I recently changed 490R/498T pickups to Lollar Imperials on my 96 LP and they sound superb. I agree that they type of guitar and tone-woods may be an important factor. That said, my T59v is the most versatile 'Gibson' that I own and can do it all.
My 2 cents, its based on your guitar and your rig. Yes the lollars sounded brighter, maybe a bit less compressed, but if you already have a fairly bright guitar the lollars may sound shrill, I know I have a bright guitar that I think the duncans would match better with. The video is great and I think it really showed the characteristics of the pickups and helped me realize duncans for a brighter guitar and the lollars for maybe more of a darker guitar.
Exactly!
I liked Lollar, think they sound more open and with more presence
Nice! I agree with the “more open” assessment. Cheers!
Lollar all the way. They are more refined. Of course, my 2 cents goes with the subjectivity regarding personal taste. Thanks !
Thanks for the input brother! Hope you subscribe!
All I know is the set of Antiquities I have in my Les Paul sound absolutely fantastic. No desire to rip them out.
Awesome!!!
Based on this video, I think I'd prefer an Imperial neck/Antiquity bridge combo.
Right on!
Going for that, but with a low Wind in the neck
Nice!
That sounds like a great shout. I've been trying to work out the best way forward in choosing new pickups for my Epi LP and as I dislike harsh bridge pickups, Antiquity/bridge with the more open Imperial/neck might be the way to go.

I recently bought an eastman T59v with the duncans but they were using the lollars last year. I've been wondering since before clicking the order button if I was missing out with the guitar having the duncans rather than the lollars and it really disappoints me to find out yes, yes I am!
The lorllars sound so much more of what I was looking for, I wanted that chimney open almost single coil sound. The ducans sound like a blanket has been put over the amp! 😭
I'm guttered, really taken the shine off getting the axe!
For a really inexpensive option to open them up, check out the stew mac golden age parson st A5. I have vids up. They are fantastic for low $!
I’m in the same boat, just bought an Eastman T59 and love it, looking at the LP models and trying to find the difference between Lollars and Seymour 59
Vibrations on Seymours Antiquity are more sensitive, and tone is more vital and breathing. They sound like from an old vinyl record.
Very cool!
Duncas sounded a bit clearer, the lollars are in overdrive earlier. Jason lollar Kent Armstrong all these greats are fantastic.
Great comparison, thank you! What humbucker would you recommend for an HSS strat alder body/ebony fretboard ? I'm thinking for antiquity surf ii single coils..
Not sure man. If you want PAF maybe just a 53mm should spaced seth lover?
@@VisualGuy Thanks for your response

You cant lose with EITHER pick up, both great! In these type comparisons its not really fair being pickup height adjusted on one guitar a lil higher or lower can make them more similar or more unalike, and also pickups like these have adjustable poles and can open up a whole new group of tones.. once you are at this level of pickup there is nothing wrong with tones they are ALL GOOD.. its what YOU like, so try changing your pole heights before rushing out and picking up something different..it may be the pickups you have do have a tone you more prefer than the way they are set from the factory. These two pickups (Imperial and Antiquities) likely have a pole position and pickup height that they would sound damn near identical with enough effort in to adjusting them. I find turning out the screws and lowering the pickup height brings a bit edgier clearer tone, l like this for my neck pick up with my Lollars imperials in my SB59V however l love the tone of the bridge set stock only lowered a couple thou's to reduce the attack...its lil more blended, even sounding tone. Just my ¢.02 no one talks about.. you dont leave your neck the way it came from the factory, it was made to adjust to YOUR liking...nor should you leave your pickups the way the came either..dont like your tone?? Change the factory set adjustment which is exactly what the factory intended for you to do... Factory specs are a starting point.. HAVE FUN!
Good advice. The first thing I tell
most viewers with questions. Albeit, I think it is fair to compare a lot of these sets through the exact same rig and set up because the wind patterns, inductance, and magnets differ. You can adjust them to get them close, but setting them both as low as possible or as high as possible could give different results because of those variables. Their for the tonality of the pickups can be a big difference. For people who already know how to adjust and fine tune, these demos help them listen for the differences in overtones, transients, etc which may work better for their rig. Its all relative and fun. If you spend enough time on this channel, you’ll find plenty of folks who always adjust and tweak. The search never stops.
@@VisualGuy l love it! It is really endless the tones that you get with pickups, so many options.. watching one vid l think a guy compared Lollar Imperials to a set of "MAD DOG" $35 ONLINE PICKUPS! And it was AMAZING how close the tones were! They were truly a bargain! I love the low wound tones of the Imperials.. but there are many to choose from that are very close to possibly better. tone is subjective.. its all what someone likes..what inspires them.. and that could be ANYTHING..from color or finish of a guitar , wood, amp choice, speaker choice...you just never know whats gonna fire someone up.. the point is that many are clueless that pickups can make a huge difference.. and then there are "Tone Weinnies" out there that spend tons on some old ORIGINAL P.A.F.s because NOTHING ELSE will do.. really?? Hey..as l said..whatever it takes to float your boat..l believe 90% of a guitars tone is in the pickups..but lets face it...its not the car..its the DRIVER! Ya think Eddie Halen worried about what paint or what wood his $100 Frankenpartscaster was made of? I dont think so but he knew enough as a kid that he knew its in the pickups.. l love America..free to choose and do as you please! Rock on!
Antiquities are really nicely balanced.
Cheers!
I really like the sound of the Antiquities but i play psychedelic rock and stoner rock so I use a decent amount of gain and fuzz. I’m sort of concerned that them being unpotted may be an issue for me, so now i’m considering maybe going for the Lollars instead just to be safe. What do y’all think? I only play at home so I’m always playing at lowish volumes.
I think the squealing from unpotted is more of a concern with volume than it is fuzz/high gain in my experience. But I’d suggest the wolfetone dr. Vintage potted. Great value
The Lollars are brighter and more open, more like real PAFs!
Thanks for chiming in!
P.A.F.s keep in mind were nothing scientific..they were inconsistant as the day is long...there were P.A.F.s that sounded like BOTH of these pick ups.. some great, some not so great. Magnets lose their pull over time and that changes, so many newer pickups such as these may be closer to PAFs back when they were new. In a hundred years..they will likely all sound like crap if they work at all.
@@jameshill2015 Yup! But today's idea of a PAF is usually less open and hotter than the majority of the real deal ones were back in the day and that's by design as a lot of people's favorite PAFs were the hottest ones.
Thanks for the comparison video! Sounded like the lollar's had a nicer high end--good clarity without being shrill. It's always hard to tell over youtube, what were your thoughts (since you were in the room with both sets)?
You nailed it. I felt the exact same on these two sets. Do check out my others too. I am currently uploading more right now.
@@VisualGuy Thanks so much! I'll check out your other videos too :)

I’m currently thinking about dragging out the Lollars in my Collings I35 and putting in a pre production set of Antiquities SD made for me. I actually quite liked the Lollars until I changed the volume/tone pots for VIpots from the very wobbly shafted CTS Dimarzios that were original. They just sound way too bright now. But honestly I think the previous tome was more due to the non inductive caps that Collings used originally.
Tinkering is fun. Let me know how it goes.
Visual Guy Yeh will do, changing out the pots and putting in PIO caps brightened the guitar up maybe too much but it does sound more like my Les Paul which is quite bright like an older one rather than a modern big roaring beast 😂😂
That’s why tone knobs exist! Mine stay on 7ish!
Great content, now subscribed. One question..... Those who have played real ‘59 bursts usually talk about the pups sounding quite brittle, clear and almost like Single Coils.... What do YOU think is the closest humbucker to this? Low Wind Lollar Imperials? Bare Knuckle PG Blues? A RiffRaff? Really appreciate your thoughts....
Hi Paul. I’d say take a peak at the Righteous Sound RAF or Tyson Tone Deacons. Those two stand out to me to fit the words you used to describe the sound. There are some awesome options from tons of winders, they are all different flavors and tools for the job. To me its really guitar dependent, and I think the reason a lot of the bursts sound like that is because of the wood and construction. While definitely a contribution, PAFs are just one factor. Not man
y people will remove the PAF from their bursts And try them in multiple guitars to see how they react. Wish we could! Haha
Thank you for your reply, appreciated 👍
How SD Seth Lovers compare to both? Thanks! Cheers!
Seth lovers doesn’t are slightly darker than the antiquities. I dont own any anymore. But you can hear a diff comparison on my home page at youtube. Its a very popular video. Thanks for hanging out. Hope you subscribe!
@@VisualGuy I have Seth Lovers in my Knaggs Kenai T2. In my Epiphone LP I have SD skinnerburst which are alnico 3 and hotter, a bit brighter and punchier. Love them both. Thanks for reply. Cheers!
I loved my Seth Lovers. Glad you dig them! Very cool. Thanks for watching. Wolfetone Dr. Vintage coming next!
Lollar's all the way!
Thanks for watching, hope you subscribe and check out the others!

I like the tone of the Duncan's better but the low notes mush apart where the lollar stays tighter. 🤔
Just got a set of these for my Sg! Can’t seem to dial them in!? What do you have them set at as far as pup height?

Is it regular or low wind in lollar pickups? I have a les paul and i´m truly in doubt about it
Hi there. These are the normal wind in this video. Hope you subscribe. I do have vids of the low winds as well.
Which Lollar pickup are they using ? Anyone know ?
Its in the description
Extremely similar.
Yep
Lollards. Duncan’s sound muffled.
Hope you subscribe!
Lollar for modern tone, sd for vintage tone
Thanks for watching! Hope you sub. Plenty more shootouts
On UA-cam, the lollars sound much better
