Die Hard absolutely is a Christmas movie. The whole movie is John McClane getting caught up in a robbery disguised as a terrorist plot during his wife’s company’s office *Christmas* party. It’s not a Christmas themed movie… but it is a Christmas movie none the less.
It is a Christmas movie and here's an argument you might not have heard. Christmas movies are often about resolving interpersonal conflict between friend/family. At the heart of Die Hard is the issue of the McClaines' separation. When Hans holds every one hostage endanger Holly's life John realized that if he doesn't save her he'll never get the chance to make up with her. John saving his marriage for the holidays is what is really what makes this a Christmas movie. It's a shame that the sequels show that he failed to actually save his marriage after all.
