In this episode of Reactions on the Rocks...where we have a drink and watch a fun show...we are reviewing Rick and Morty S4 E10 "Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri". An adventure with an invisibility belt, but a family that disappears together, must stay together.

Rick sees recorded memories through the eyes of the person which memories he has. He turned away because he didn't want to choose which one of them would stay home. So Rick doesn't know...

Even Rick doesn’t know which is the clone.
Rick saw the whole video (and so did we) Rick doesnt know which clone is which because he took off the labels, turned his back to the clone tubes and had them shell nut game mixed up so he cant follow them. he randomly sent one out into the universe, with how perfect ricks clones are, chances are we will never know who is the real beth.
@@capt.gigglepants1538 We also learned in Morty's mind blowers that rick will add stuff not actually part of the memory so they can be watched better. This was said after a memory that continued on after rick and Morty left.
I think they left a hint as to which is the clone and which is Beth. When Rick first offered to clone Beth, there was no talk whatsoever of removing Beth's memories. The Beth we've been watching had no idea about the clone because she accosted Rick in the ship as if this was new knowledge. Space Beth knows all of it already.
Beth is the clone that was wiped of Ricks offer and replaced Beth.
Space Beth is the real Beth.

Rick: And just to be sure, you’re not pretending to be convinced you’re real because you’re actually convinced you’re a clone and you’re now terrified that becoming self-aware would mean I’d have to terminate you?
Beth: No.
Rick: Okay. Glad I could help. See you soon.
@@zackstoner4523 Yeah after typing that up i went back and realised the continuity is fucked, she acts like it's new news here but obviously the conversation you replied with happened, the one bit of continuity for rick is that he never actually confirms when she asks, he blusters to her basically, obviously this episode tells us why he never confirmed nor denied her.
The Important thing isn't who's the clone it's rick's choice, rick is so non-committal that he didn't wanna pick an outcome, so the assignment was at random.
It’s also kind of a heavy burden that Beth placed on him tho.
Also that it doesn’t really matter. They’re the same person.

It's really satisfying to see Jerry to not screw up a lot in an episode.

@@nobodynowhere8061 Rick switched them around because he knew it wouldn't matter because they're both his daughter, just like how this Beth isn't even his real Beth, he abandoned his "real" one in the Cronenberg dimension. Rick is scared to be completely attached to his family because he thinks he's above all that due to his intelligence and it has alienated everyone around him. It's really sad. The Rickest Rick is also the loneliest Rick.

@@GoliathWarfare Honestly I don't even think the Cronenberg one was his "real" one, I feel like he's abandoned his universe before at least once. Especially since in the first Evil Morty episode we see he has memories of holding baby Morty, and in the main two universes we've seen I'm pretty sure he wasn't around when Morty was younger.
@@markfuston2714 Well, we know he didn't come back into Beth's life until shortly before series one. However, it's very likely that he kept tabs on them while he was away so he would have known when Morty was born. Rick could have easily portalled in while Beth and Jerry were out of the room (maybe asleep in bed) and taken the photo with baby Morty before portalling away without being discovered. I dunno, it's a possibility.
what does it matter which one is the clone?? there are still infinite multiverse Beth's, the one we've been following for 3 seasons is not even the original Beth, remember? they stayed on the monster infested Earth and Rick and Morty just escaped that one, Rick is not even in his original body, he's been through like 7, so why the obsession?? haha she's still Beth.
also, its been hinted that the Beth from season 1 (who's on cronenberg planet now) is not Rick's original Beth either.
Also they left another Earth after Morty could hear the squirrels but most people seem to forget that one.
It could be more about just being right and obsessing over what to know, without actually thinking to themselves about why it matters anymore... but, I think it might be because they think much less of the "clone" Beth for whatever reason, probably due to them not remembering how she threw away her dreams in getting roped into a premature toxic relationship... so, it matters to them which is the "clone" or the "real" one ig? I don't really get it either with how many times they switched realities, nor do I get why they kept taking Rick's word for whose his "real" daughter and were so quick to believe that Space Beth was the "real" one before. Confirmation bias to extremeeee. And they even still think Rick somehow knows who the "real" one is, like they didn't just watch him turn the away and switch the capsules they were in around SPECIFICALLY so he'll never know. Maybe they don't know how clones work and they think it's like an evil twin instead??? Like, why aren't they wondering if our Jerry is the "real" Jerry after the JerryBoree if it matters so much?
He took the labels off the clones and spun them ... it wouldn't matter if he finished watching the memory. It was a memory that he permanently hid the answer from himself.

I think most people missed it. I think it was the most selfless thing we ever had seen Rick do. He wanted his daughter to stay. Even he said just prior, To go, let your universe kick itself out. She wanted him to make the choice for her. So he gave her both options. That chip in both Beth's necks would have uploaded the others memories if one had died. Yeah i am sure it was a explosive also, haha it is Rick. However either way if she stayed or left, she would have had both experiences.
Rick wanted for Beth to both leave and to stay. So he created a clone of her so that she could experience both of those choices. But after that Rick still couldn't decide if wether the original Beth should be the one to leave or stay. That's why he removed their labels and let the machine shuffle them.
He later then used his 'mind blower' device because of the guilt and fear that he felt afterwards. The guilt of being unable to decide on what path his current daughter should take and the fear of finding out if what he did choose turns out to be the miserable path for her.

Has anyone else noticed that this season Rick has been constantly losing and being saved? Interesting considering that the subject is considered a kind of pseudo-god. I don't think it matters what the "real" Beth is, at the end of the day she's still Beth.
I loved seeing Rick truly being knocked down a peg. He got his ass kicked by Zeus and even in that toilet episode he never truly got one over on that dude.
He also got captured by face hugging aliens and almost lost to that one wizard dude.
You can’t run the plot of an unbeatable god for too long. It becomes boring. Look at One Punch Man, after first season the focus completely went to secondary characters. When Rick was spaceship flying to the wrangler destroyer, we saw what he’s capable of. Opening several portals and killing all of them. He can actually win any conflict. But the writers are trying to write a lesson that’s ricks nihilistic philosophy is wrong. And to prove that, Rick must lose.

Rick erased his memory so he wouldn't know that he never knew which Beth was real until he decided to check because something happened to one of them, at which point he would discover that he didn't know which was which and thus be able to treat either Beth as his daughter. Obviously.

I think the reason Rick made that clone was because he didn't what to say to Beth. She wanted to leave, but she would only do so if her father didn't want her around. She even asked if he wanted her to stay or go. Rick made the clone just so he didn't have to choose which answer to give his own daughter. The Beth we've come to know was given the answer of Rick wanting her to stay and Space Beth was given the answer of Rick wanting her to leave. Honestly, if I had that situation with my own kid, I would be conflicted by it too.

Its crazy i found you guys out through this show.and now i watch all your videos and I love you guys more than the shows you watch
The clone is an exact copy with the same memories up to the decision so it never really mattered which one was the clone.
So I think the part that really matters was when Beth said he wanted Rick to decide what he wanted for her, going out maximizing her potential or stay at home with the family. In reality he wanted both. So that's why he mixed them up and made the decision to not know, so in a way he can have both.
Been watching every weekend since january, through lockdown you have helped me a lot. thank you and looking forward to the next one :)
Honestly, I don't think Rick was being a dick when he did the switcheroo so as to not know who was real, because not knowing who the real Beth was meant no matter which one stayed, he'd still view her as his daughter.

The two versions of Beth reflect those fateful moments in life when we make a life-altering decision, and become somebody else in the process. There is no “real” Beth. The original Beth was already left behind, long ago, when Rick and Morty switched universes after destroying human civilization

Community - Dan Harmon's other show. Similar to Rick and Morty in style of humour, but set in a community college in Colorado and not animated, and there's no aliens. (But in one episode, there is a zombie apocalypse...) There's a "blink and you'll miss it" Community reference in episode 3 of season 2 of Rick and Morty, where Unity is making a TV show with aliens that all look like the cast of Community.
Avatar the Last Airbender - pseudo-anime kid's show with some awesome writing and characters.

The whole clone thing is an odd thing to be “questioning” about since the series has time and time again shown how there’s “infinite” realities. So yes, there’s a whole bunch of realities where *Beth* is also a clone.
React to Community next please, it's not only by Dan Harmon, but it feels a lot like Rick and Morty in tone/spirit, almost like a proto-R&M but in a good way. You'll like it, I promise!! 👍😇👍
I agree! I would love to see them watch all of Community! I read an interesting article the other day where Dan Harmon talked about how the "Shy Pooper" episode of R&M in season 4 was originally going to be a Community episode, and Jeff was gonna be the shy pooper. lol

Not gonna lie I always tear up at those scenes with Rick .. He always tries what his logical brain thinks is the best outcome for his family and it usually backfires , leaving the people he cares the most about thinking that he doesn't care ...

I think us never knowing which Beth is which is actually perfectly in keeping with the show's core nihilism: ultimately, it literally doesn't *matter* which one is which, because they're both equally "real" as far as their memories, feelings, and experiences go. Just like how it ultimately is fine whenever Rick and Morty jump to new realities, abandoning their "real" families - or when they repeatedly wipe out their memories of trauma, despite the fact that losing those memories maybe means they've lost their "real" selves.
In the multiverse of this show, not knowing who the "real" Beth is feels less like a cliffhanger or a copout to me, and more like a strange kind of freedom.
This is how long we waited Rick and Morty began in 2013
BoJack NEEDS to be the show to take over the On The Rocks slot. R&M is great but BoJack is a fucking masterpiece and one of the greatest shows, animated or not, of the 2010's

They said in the Morty's Mind Blowers episode that Rick alters the memories for better viewership/perspective. In that clone memory he actually has his back to the tanks with the Beth's and can't see which one is which.

The one that left is real, because the original had the idea to leave. The clone is the one with the family because she is like a different person that went back to Jerry something the real one would not do likely.

The thing is, it doesn’t matter who’s the clone.
1. What difference is there between alternate dimension Beth and his Beth? As much as there is with a clone. Since they share the same memories, they are almost the same in every regard.
2. Rick is a coward. He didn’t want to make the decision so he masterfully avoided it. But he couldn’t kill either Beth because he considers them both real.
The video was 3rd person so we could see what rick was doing but if you think about it logically it's his memory and he was looking in the other direction so he wouldn't have known which beth was which even if he watches the whole thing. Like if you were to rewatch one of your own memories there wouldn't be a floating camera that lets you see yourself, you see the memory from your perspective the way you experienced it. So we could see the containers spinning but rick wouldn't have actually seen that. So he wasn't choosing not to know he just doesn't know

Jerry gets his big moments in season finales, gaining steam as the series goes on. S1 was getting to be Rose in Titanic 2 surviving maid. S2 was getting the credit for having interdimensional terrorist Rick Sanchez caught. S3 was getting his family back despite Rick's best effort. S4 was saving the family from Phoenix Person with his puppetry.
Here's to hoping the wait isn't long since Season 5 has already been written.

i know this is super late, but im pretty sure space beth is the clone, side profile of both beths show that their nose and chin are different and the beth on earth was the one that matched pre clone
The point of the clone thing is definitely another it doesn't matter thing. Like the people who keep talking about the Jerryboree "mix up" and the point of that wasn't what reality but rather Jerry doesn't matter.
It absolutely matters in terms of Rick, he is such an emotional coward that he refused to make a choice and instead tried to have it both ways - only for it to backfire. He could have told Beth that he wouldn't make that decision or actually done what he said he would, but he wanted Beth with him and he wanted Beth to experience what he did. His nihilism is destroying what little connection he did have to his family because it is impossible to value something when you want, and can have, things every which way.

What are you even talking about? Hell, the fact that Rick treats it like it doesn't matter is in itself pointed out to matter in the episode. Did you miss the entire segment where both Beths get pissed at Rick while being held captive because he casually dismisses which is his real daughter? The Beths won't allow Rick to hold the information over their heads to control them, which is precisely what Summer points out before leaving Rick alone in the garage to learn he was too much of a coward to actually make a decision and left himself in the dark.

My guess is that Rick didn't think he would care at the time because neither are his real daughter anyway, so what difference would it make when he has infinite daughters.
Plenty of Rick and Morty-related stuff on UA-cam you guys can react to, like the Simpsons couch gag that they were in, the various commercials they were in, the anime one, the bushworld adventure, the fan-made live-action one where Rick finally gets his Szechwan sauce, and the claymation adventures, just to name a few.
I haven't watched past this point yet, but my gut feeling, is that Rick may not have known in the moment who was who, but, after the fact, he'll have no problem figuring out, because he records everything. And, if that does come to pass, I feel like there will be some kind of retroactive reveal about those few minutes. This show has really wired my brain a certain way!

It's kind of obvious how he left Beth to face the cronenberg nightmare, he's right he's a terrible father but it's also sweet that though he has an infinite number of Beth's which you could easily fall under the impression that that makes them infinitely insignificant, he has an infinite amount of love for them and doesn't care if it's the clone or not so yes he's a terrible father but he doesn't care if it's his beth he still loves her.
Beth asked Rick to choose if he wanted her to stay or go. Rick could not make the desicion either way because he cannot admit that he needs his family to his family. It's why he's tried to keep them at arms length the entire series (and knowing his backstory in hindsight it makes even more sense).
His decision to not know which Beth was the original was all so he didn't have to make the choice. It was pure selfishness.

I think that the point was "Does it really matter which Beth is the clone?". At the end of the day, we have 2 awesome Beths.
You don't understand - Rick *can't* know which Beth is which. He took off the labels, then had the computer mix them up, shell-game style. He doesn't know. He *can't* know. From a practical standpoint, the *creators* don't know.
I think the point was is that it genuinly doesnt matter, if a perfect clone of you exists, with your memories. They can replace you. If the kids love both, if Rick accepts both, then why not have both? It doesn't matter at this point which one was first, their both real in any sense.
